In Catalonia, November 9th is an historic date; the day in 2014 when the autonomous community voted in a self-organised independence referendum. We meet the "9N" activists who fought to vote for a revolution.
"We vote 'yes' to dignity, 'yes' to independence. And we are happy to vote and proud to be a people who want to talk and want to be heard", says a woman taking part in evening demonstration in Catalonia. For many Catalans this was the turning point in their demand for autonomy. An ineffectual and illegal action to the Spanish state who denied an official referendum, 9N became a focused and peaceful call for independence. For historian Lluis Roura Anlinas, Catalonia's democratic requests have been ignored long enough, so that "anger and revenge could explode at any time". But with results of a landslide vote for independence ignored by the government in Madrid, separation remains elusive. "Spain is showing that it is not able to give answers", says Anlinas.

Catalonia
Catalonia (Catalan: Catalunya, Occitan: Catalonha, Spanish: Cataluña) is an autonomous community of Spain politically designated as a nationality. Catalonia consists of four provinces: Barcelona, Girona, Lleida, and Tarragona. The capital and largest city is Barcelona, the second-largest city in Spain and the centre of one of the largest metropolitan areas in Europe and the Mediterranean basin.
Catalonia comprises most of the territory of the former Principality of Catalonia, with the remainder now part of France's Pyrénées-Orientales. It is bordered by France and Andorra to the north, the Mediterranean Sea to the east, and the Spanish autonomous communities of Aragon to the west and Valencia to the south. The official languages are Catalan, Spanish, and the Aranese dialect of Occitan.

In Catalonia, November 9th is an historic date; the day in 2014 when the autonomous community voted in a self-organised independence referendum. We meet the "9N" activists who fought to vote for a revolution.
"We vote 'yes' to dignity, 'yes' to independence. And we are happy to vote and proud to be a people who want to talk and want to be heard", says a woman taking part in evening demonstration in Catalonia. For many Catalans this was the turning point in their demand for autonomy. An ineffectual and illegal action to the Spanish state who denied an official referendum, 9N became a focused and peaceful call for independence. For historian Lluis Roura Anlinas, Catalonia's democratic requests have been ignored long enough, so that "anger and revenge could explode at any time". But with results of a landslide vote for independence ignored by the government in Madrid, separation remains elusive. "Spain is showing that it is not able to give answers", says Anlinas.

Costa Brava, the wild coast, is the romantic coast of Catalonia which theoretically reaches from the French border to Blanes but actually to Barcelona. Karakes is the most original settlement of Costa Brava. It can be reached on winding mountain roads. Cape Grousse, the eastern most point of Catalonia occasionally reveals its full beauty as it unfolds before us along the roadside. Karakes existed as a fishing village for centuries. In 1543, the entire settlement was burned down by pirates of Karadena, Barbarossa, also most of the settlers lost their lives. Later, they could successfully resist the attacks. Then under the leadership of Salvador Dali, they resisted the mass tourism of General Franco as well and did not let the little houses be pulled down to make way for concrete blocks instead. The artist persuaded local people to think long term and today is has been clearly established that he was right.
The only possible way is the conservation of values and atmosphere of the settlements, rejecting uniformity and short term interests. Unfortunately, this is not accepted globally. Costa Brava has very few settlements that have preserved their quaint buildings in such good condition. All of the houses are white washed and the highest building is still the parish church. The world famous baroque retablo is the work of Jacinth Mareto and Paolo Costa. It's remarkable also for the fact that it weathered the storm of the Spanish civil war intact. It's generally said to be the most beautiful settlement of the area and those who don't rove the alleys of this little town of 1500 residents, don't see very much of Costa Brava.
The fact that the painting school boasting names like Dali, Picasso, Matisse, -- Utrio and -- was founded here can also be attributed to the intactness of Karakes. The two most famous figures of Spanish literature, Garcia Lorca and Garcia Marquez lived here. Luis -- also spent his summer holiday here on Dali's invitation. It's surprising how many famous artists Spain and particularly Catalonia have given to the world, particularly in the field of fine arts and architecture. In musical life, the cellist Pablo Casals can be mentioned. Maybe it's Catalan literature that has not managed to cross the borders of the province and unknowingness. Is it possible that the name of Juan Maragal and -- or -- might be as popular one day as that of Paulo Coelho?
The statue of Dali stands on the coastal promenade today. His father is a native son and the painter spent all his summer vacations here. There are three art museums in Karakes, one of them is the richest private collection of Europe that belongs to the Perot Moore Foundation. The collection shows the best drawings of five centuries with art works by Raphaello, Carvaggio, -- Rubens, Tiapolo, Goya, Rodin, Matisse, and others. The photo gallery exhibiting some of the family pictures of Dali taken mainly in Karakes and Port -- is also very interesting.
We should definitely see the blue frame decorated house at the seaside in which Picasso lived in 1910. A plaque on the wall commemorates the artist Picasso who was born in Malaga, lived all around southern Europe. He was fond of the Spanish and French landscape and of the sea but spent most of his life in Paris.

This week we are exploring another Spanish city. We are in Barcelona and this video is going to highlight 25 things to do here.
It is kind of hard to believe our time in Barcelona has expired. So final thoughts.
Well, it was a really fun city to visit. Great architecture, really nice beaches. It is very lively especially at night. The only downfall is that we were here in the middle of summer so it was super hot and super crowded and sometimes that made it a little bit difficult to enjoy. Especially at midday or in the mid-afternoon. So keep that in mind. Maybe consider visiting in the springtime, fall, winter.
Well, so what did you think of the city?
It is definitely a fun city. We had a lot of fun going to the beaches. One thing that is really different about this city compared to some other European cities though is that it is really spread out. In order for us to visit all of these different attractions we had to chunk them together into groups to visit them day by day. Overall, it was a decent city. It didn't quite click with me the same way that Madrid did. But that is just personal preference I suppose.
And that is a wrap for Barcelona! Our 5 days in the city flew by, and while this guide didn't cover everything, we hope we were able to give you a feel of what this fun seaside city has to offer. Catalonia, Spain Travel Guide: Devil’s Dance (Diables) a stunning elements of Catalan festivals and one of the most deeply rooted traditions.
La Patum, is a popular and traditional festival that is celebrated each year in the Catalan city of Berga during Corpus Christi. The Patum festival features a series of parades, street show, characters and figures that fill the streets of Berga every spring.
The Ball de diables is a theatrical representation of the struggle between the good and the evil. This celebration occurs between the month of August and September in main cities as Barcelona, Cervera, Tarragona, Reus, Igualada, El Vendrell, Vilafranca, Vilanova, etc.
Devil figures, stemming from pagan legends, run through dusk darkened streets brandishing sparking forks amidst flames and fireworks. Firecrackers are attached to the prongs of every pitchfork and the devils and dragons, intermingling with the crowds, began to dance and run through the streets and alleyways twirling the 5-feet plumes of sparks so that they shower down people's heads. It is approximate about 45-minute of riot of sparks, explosions, smoke, devils, dragons and drums!
