The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), also known as the UN Refugee Agency, is a United Nations agency mandated to protect and support refugees at the request of a government or the UN itself and assists in their voluntary repatriation, local integration or resettlement to a third country. Its headquarters are in Geneva, Switzerland and is a member of the United Nations Development Group. The UNHCR has won two Nobel Peace Prizes, once in 1954 and again in 1981.
Following the demise of the League of Nations and the formation of the United Nations the international community was acutely aware of the refugee crisis following the end of World War II. In 1947, the International Refugee Organization (IRO) was founded by the United Nations. The IRO was the first international agency to deal comprehensively with all aspects pertaining to refugees' lives. Preceding this was the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration, which was established in 1944 to address the millions of people displaced across Europe as a result of World War II.

Cate Blanchett performs the rhythmic poem ‘What They Took With Them’ alongside fellow actors Keira Knightley, Juliet Stevenson, Peter Capaldi, Stanley Tucci, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kit Harington, Douglas Booth, Jesse Eisenberg and Neil Gaiman. The poem was written by Jenifer Toksvig and was inspired by stories and first-hand testimonies from refugees forced to flee their homes and items they took with them. One of the sources for the poem was Brian Sokol’s photography project, ‘The Most Important Thing,’ made in collaboration with UNHCR. Many of Brian's photos, along with firsthand accounts from the refugees he photographed, are featured in the film. Released exclusively on Facebook, the film urges people to sign the #WithRefugees petition to help ensure refugees have the basics to build bac...
Those whose lives have been uprooted and torn apart by conflict or natural disaster, UNHCR exists to help them. This is our story. The High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) was established in December 1950. The Second World War left over one million refugees far from home and governments in need of assistance to coordinate the crisis. UNHCR was created to help. The founders thought their task would only take three years but new conflicts broke out and more families were forced flee their homes. In 1951 we started with 34 employees. By the end of 2013 we had over 8,000 people working in 126 countries. I can't see you mama
But I can hardly wait
Oh, to touch and to feel you mama
Oh, I just can't keep away
In the heat and the steam of the city
Oh, it's got me running and I just can't brake
So say, you'll help me, mama
'Cause its getting so hard, woah
Now I can't keep you mama
But I know you're always there
You listen, you teach me, mama
And I know inside you care
So get down, down here beside me
Oh, you ain't going nowhere
No, I won't hurt you, mama
But its getting so hard, woah
Ha ha ha, ha ha ha, argh
Ha ha ha, ha ha ha, argh
Can't you see me here, mama?
Mama, mama, mama please
Can't you feel my heart?
Can't you feel my heart?
Can't you feel my heart? Oh
Now listen to me mama, mama
Mama, you're taking away my last chance
Don't take it away
Can't you feel my heart?
Ha ha ha, ha ha ha, argh
Now I can't see you mama
But I know you're always there
You taunt, you tease me, mama
But I never, never, never, can keep away, yeah
It's the heat and the steam of the city
Oh, got me running and I just can't brake
So stay don't leave me, mama
'Cause its getting so hard, woah
Don't go, no, no, don't go
No, no, no, no, no, no, don't go
Don't go, don't go
Yeah, don't go, don't go
