On 23rd May 1993, a 500lb IRA car bomb caused extensive damage to the commercial centre of Magherafelt, some of which has yet to be rebuilt (space beside DV8). The bus station was entirely demolished by the blast, but has recently been redeveloped.
Another "proxy bomb" wrecked a UDR base in Magherafelt, County Londonderry, in early February 1991. The proxy bomb (also known as a human bomb) was a tactic used by the IRA, whereby innocent people were forced to drive car bombs to targets. It has also been used in Colombia by FARC rebels.

Infrastructure Minister Chris Hazzard has officially opened the A31 Magherafelt bypass representing an investment of £35million, following its completion several weeks ahead of schedule.
The new 6 kilometre bypass will improve links for the movement of people, goods and services in the Mid Ulster area to and from the M2, Belfast and north-east.
Minister Chris Hazzard said: “The A31 is a strategically important and busy route. The investment and delivery of the £35million bypass will improve local connections to the Key Transport Corridor network and significantly ease congestion in Magherafelt by up to around 50,000 vehicles every week.
“In addition to reducing congestion, the bypass will help improve road safety and reduce journey times.”
The new bypass was built on a largely green field site to the east of Magherafelt between the A31 Moneymore Road at Coolshinny Road junction to the south of Magherafelt and the A6 Castledawson roundabout to the north. It incorporates three new roundabouts at Moneymore Road, Ballyronan Road and Aughrim Road which provide access to the new road as well as a number of under bridges at Killyfaddy Road, Loves Road and Killyneese Road.
The Minister continued: “Delivering extensive improvements to the roads infrastructure such as this involves the cooperation and understanding of the local community. I acknowledge the impact that this scheme has had on residents, landowners and businesses. However, I am confident that everyone involved will see and immediately begin to benefit from this significant investment.
“My congratulations go to the construction companies BAM and McCann on the joint delivery of the scheme ahead of schedule.”
Since the scheme began in June 2015, over 500,000 cubic metres of earthworks material has been excavated including over 25,000 cubic metres of rock. 46,000 tonnes of bituminous material was laid which directly benefited local suppliers of construction material.
The scheme provided employment for seven people who were previously registered as unemployed. It also provided employment for seven student placements and 16 apprentices. In addition, 90 training placement weeks were also delivered as a result of the investment.

Magherafelt (from Irish: Machaire Fíolta, meaning "plain of Fíolta") is a small town and civil parish in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. It had a population of 8,372 at the 2001 Census. It is the biggest town in the south of the county and is the social, economic and political hub of the area. Magherafelt District Council is headquartered in the town.
History
Magherafelt has been documented as a town since 1425. Following the Plantation of Ulster, a central diamond has formed the heart of the town. During The Troubles in the late 20th century, 11 people were killed in or near Magherafelt in connection with the troubles.
Transport
Magherafelt railway station opened on 10 November 1856, shut for passenger traffic on 28 August 1950 and shut altogether on 1 October 1959.

Urban artist Visual Waste brings street art to streets of Belfast
By KIRTSEN ELDER TALENTED commercial street artist fe speaks on camera for the first time about his bold artwork and the increasing popularity of his work within the business world. Visual Waste, aka Dean Kane who is best known for his standout pieces round Northern Ireland, especially round the North Street area of Belfast which seems to becoming some what of a ‘Graffiti street’. People have travelled from all over Europe to view his well-known eye-popping piece on Heisenberg from the hit AMC series Breaking Bad (2008-2013). The Irish take pride in lamb from specific regions—Connemara Hill lamb even has geographical protection from the European Union. Mary Gleeson of Gleeson’s Townhouse & Restaraunt, Roscommon, says it’s the sweet, grass-reared Roscommon lamb that makes her stew so tasty and admired. TALENTED commercial street artist fe speaks on camera for the first time about his bold artwork and the increasing popularity of his work within the business world.
Visual Waste, aka Dean Kane who is best known for his standout pieces round Northern Ireland, especially round the North Street area of Belfast which seems to becoming some what of a ‘Graffiti street’.
People have travelled from all over Europe to view his well-known eye-popping piece on Heisenberg from the hit AMC series Breaking Bad (2008-2013).
Dean, from Tandragee, Co Armagh, said: “Just last week a lady from Paris was over in Belfast to see the piece, she had got in touch with me and I had to break the bad news to her that it was no longer here.
“I’ve had quite a lot of attention over this piece, it was painted over by another artist, this is what happens and how trends in street art keep changing, by constantly being updated.”
Belfast businesses such as art supplier Ink Monkey, Dr. Martens, The Maverick bar, The National Café and The Dirty Onion all have pieces by Visual Waste.
Ink Monkey have an entire wall that depicts what is going on in the outside world by Visual Waste, not his usual style as he ‘tries to avoid a lot of colour’ and work with ‘black and white’ and ‘small amounts of colour’ to make pieces really stand out.
Corn Market’s Dr. Martens store have the walls surrounding their staircase totally covered with Dean’s work, while he was working in the store he also put his stamp on some custom Dr. Marten boots which sadly are not for sale.
Dean never set out to make this his full-time job, he said: “One job just led to another and it just sort of happened…. I absolutely love it.”
Businesses are quickly getting on trend by hiring talented street artists such as Visual Waste to make their company stand out amongst competitors.
Dean said: “Street art is becoming its own art form and a great way for businesses to advertise and also a really efficient way of tapping into certain demographics and engaging with specific types of audiences.
“In order to take out a billboard in the City Centre I think it’s approximately £600 a month, when you could commission an artist to do a huge piece in your shop. Then people will want to come down and see it, photographic it, put it on their instagram and tag your location. Then it all spirals from here.”
The people of Belfast and farther afield will be pleased about the possibility of Visual Waste bringing back Heisenberg this Summer ‘if I get the chance to paint another Heisenberg on North Street, of course I’m going to take it.’
Look out for current pieces that Dean has just started working on in Magherafelt, Banbridge and Portadown.
