John Wood was a rising executive with Microsoft when he took a vacation that changed his life. What started as a trekking holiday in Nepal, back in 1998, became a spiritual journey and later a mission to change the world one book and one child at a time, by setting up libraries in the developing world. In 1998, John took a vacation that changed his life. Trekking through a remote Himalayan village, he struck up conversation with a schoolteacher, who invited John to visit his school. There, John discovered that the few books available were so precious that they were kept under lock and key - to protect them from the children! Fewer than 20 books, all backpacker cast-aways, were available for more than 450 students.
What started with a simple email requesting friends donate used books has grown into Room to Read, an award-winning non-profit that over the past eleven years has established over 12,500 libraries, donated and published 10 million books, built over 1,500 schools, and supported more than 13,500 girls so they can graduate from secondary school with the skills they need to succeed. John Wood (Australian actor)
John Wood (born 14 July 1946 in Melbourne) is a Gold Logie Award-winning Australian actor and writer, best known for his role as Senior Sergeant Tom Croydon in the Seven Network's long running police drama Blue Heelers.
TV career
Wood began his acting career in 1967, where he had a guest role in Bellbird, an Australian television series. He then appeared in several Australian drama series and mini-series in minor roles. John also wrote eleven episodes of the series Prisoner. It wasn't until 1987 that John Wood became a well-known actor, taking the lead in Rafferty's Rules, as magistrate Michael Rafferty. Wood twice won a Logie for "Most Outstanding Actor" for his role in the show during its four seasons.
In 1993 Wood landed a leading role in Blue Heelers as Tom Croydon. This show became a big hit in Australia. As well as starring in the show, he also wrote several episodes. The show was finally cancelled in 2006, and Wood is one of only two actors (the other being Julie Nihill) to star in Blue Heelers from its beginning in 1993 to its end in 2006, although Wood is the only character to be seen in every single episode. Wood also wrote three episodes for the series.

Larry Moss began his career at New York's famed cabaret Upstairs at the Downstairs and went on to appear on Broadway in numerous productions including Joe Layton's Drat! The Cat!, Neil Simon's God's Favorite, directed by Michael Bennett, Burt Shevelove's So Long 174th Street, Gerald Freedman's The Robber Bridegroom, and Gene Saks' I Love My Wife.
After teaching in New York at Juilliard and Circle in the Square, he moved to Los Angeles and founded The Larry Moss Studio. It was here that he directed and developed Pamela Gien's The Syringa Tree, which had its world premiere at ACT in Seattle. The Syringa Tree opened in New York in September 2000 and won the Obie Award for Best Play of 2001, the Drama Desk Award, the Outer Circle Critics Award for Outstanding Solo Performance, a Drama League Honor and a nomination for the John Gassner Playwriting Award. The Syringa Tree has played to sold out houses and critical acclaim around the world, including London (The National Theater), Toronto (Can Stage), where it won the Dora Award for Best Actress and Best Play of 2005. Moss directed the TV version that was filmed by Trio Arts Network and most recently, Pamela and Larry, and their producer Matt Salinger, took The Syringa Tree on a profound journey of the heart, home, to South Africa to the Baxter Theater.

Estate agent, Suzy Lamplugh, disappeared in July 1986 after going to meet a client at a house in Fulham. Witnesses said they saw her arguing with a man near the address and then getting into a car. She has never been seen since. For almost thirty years police have followed many lines of enquiry – one being to identify who ‘Mr Kipper’ is that she went to meet. So far they have reached a dead end. In 1994 she was officially declared dead, presumed murdered. The strongest theory to date is that convicted rapist and killer, John Cannan, killed Lamplugh. But as yet, this hasn’t been proven.
John David Guise Cannan (born 20 February 1954)[1] is a British murderer and rapist. A former car salesman,[2] he was convicted in July 1988 of murder and sexual offences. He was given three life sentences, with a recommendation never to be released, for the murder of Shirley Banks in Bristol in October 1987, the attempted kidnapping of Julia Holman on the previous night, and the rape of a woman in Reading in 1986. He targeted professional women.[3]
He is the only suspect in the murder of Suzy Lamplugh, who vanished in July 1986, after going to meet an man calling himself 'Mr Kipper'. In November 2002, however, the Crown Prosecution Service decided that there was insufficient evidence to charge him.That month, Scotland Yard held a press conference at which, in a rare move, officers named him as the man they believe murdered Lamplugh.

By regarding buildings as inanimate, we accept them as fundamentally dissipative. This is because the passive idea of ‘conserving’ building reflects the pessimistic logic of classical thermodynamics.
In discussing ways to re-direct the current Building Information Modeling (BIM) agenda, John draws upon theories of living systems furnished by Maturana & Varela and Jakob von Uexküll. He asks whether BIM could be developed to make future buildings come to life?
By contrast, the life sciences depict living creatures as systems that maintain their collective survival by resisting entropy. The reason why thermostats and clocks are the dumbest gadgets on the planet is because they are expressly designed to ignore their own role and context. If BIM files were to be interactively updated by the metabolic states of a given building, this might help it to acquire a level of consciousness that includes its own presence and interdependency with the habitat.
Ultimately, perhaps living buildings will learn to share tasks with their inhabitants on a symbiotic basis.
About the speaker
John Wood graduated in fine art in 1968 and exhibited his electronic, interactive sound installations in many countries. He then became concerned about the threat of a global ecological disaster and began to invent several solar energy devices and write for publication. In 1978 he became Deputy Head of the Fine Art Department at Goldsmiths, University of London, where he is now Emeritus Professor of Design. After ten years in this role he launched several radical design degrees, including the BA(Hons) in Design (1989) and the MA in Design Futures (1995), which became the basis for what is now the College’s Department of Design. John has published over a hundred and fifty articles, papers and chapters. He also co-founded the international ‘Writing-PAD Network’ and is co-editor (with Julia Lockheart) of its ‘Journal of Writing in Creative Practice’. His (AHRC/EPSRC funded) research into synergy led him to set up the Metadesigners Network. His second book, ‘Designing for Micro-utopias; thinking beyond the possible’, (Ashgate, 2007) argues that eco-designers need to devise new methods that change paradigms, rather than seeking incremental improvements within a flawed economic model. John still records, travels and performs with several musical groups, including the cult band ‘Deaf School’ and the much newer ‘Clang Group’.

The engineer who was at the controls during the tragic train crash on Thursday morning was a veteran of the industry with 29 years of experience named Thomas Gallagher, according to The Star Tribune.
