The National Hurricane Center (NHC), located at Florida International University in University Park, unincorporated Miami-Dade County, Florida, is the division of the United States' National Weather Service responsible for tracking and predicting weather systems within the tropics between the Prime Meridian and the 140th meridian west poleward to the 30th parallel north in the northeast Pacific ocean and the 31st parallel north in the northern Atlantic ocean. Its Tropical Analysis and Forecast Branch (TAFB) routinely issues marine forecasts, in the form of graphics and high seas forecasts, for this area year round, with the Ocean Prediction Center having backup responsibility for this unit. The Technology and Science Branch (TSB) provides technical support for the center, which includes new infusions of technology from abroad. The Chief, Aerial Reconnaissance Coordination, All Hurricanes (CARCAH) unit tasks planes, for research and operational purposes, to tropical cyclones during the Atlantic hurricane season and significant weather events, including snow storms, during winter and spring. Research conducted to improve operational forecasts is done through the Hurricane Forecast Improvement Project (HFIP) and Joint Hurricane Test Bed (JHT) initiatives.
Dr. Rick Knabb explains the dangers posed by monster storm
Extending a Jaw dropping stretch of rapid intensification, Hurricane Matthew has become the Atlantic's first Category 5 hurricane since Felix in 2007. Matthew's top sustained winds were set at 160 mph in the update from the National Hurricane Center. Since then it has been slowed to a Category 4 but is expected to increase again which is very unusual. Models agree strongly that Matthew will begin taking a fairly sharp right turn on Saturday, heading north-northwest through the central Caribbean. Some others believe it could head west toward Florida and the Gulf Coast States. Conditions should be very favorable for maintaining Matthew's strength at this point. Wind shear is projected to drop dramatically (perhaps below 10 knots by Sunday), the deep atmosphere will moisten further (close to ...

Matthew has become the fifth hurricane and 13th named storm of the 2016 Atlantic season after strengthening today, the National Hurricane Center said. CNN's Jennifer Gray reports.
The National Hurricane Center has extended the hurricane warning northward in Florida as Matthew heads toward the East Coast.
Matthew strengthened to a Category 5 major hurricane in the Caribbean late Friday night and remains a dangerous threat to Jamaica, Haiti, Cuba and the Bahamas over the next few days. The storm could still impact the U.S. East Coast by next week after its rampage through the Caribbean. Hurricane Matthew strengthens into Category 5, still a US threat. Matthew weakened slightly to a Category 4 major hurricane early Saturday as it barreled through the Caribbean, on target to approach Jamaica late Sunday and likely brush southeast Florida at mid-week. En route, it also threatens Haiti, Cuba and the Bahamas into Monday. AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Bernie Rayno says if Matthew moves swiftly as it heads north, it has a greater chance of causing significant impact from rain, wind and flooding along along much of the Atlantic coast. "On the other hand, if Matthew's forward speed slows, it could still have significant impact on the Atlantic coast, but in a much smaller area, when compared to a fast-moving hurricane," he says. The center five-day forecast shows Matthew's c...
The U.S. National Hurricane Center called it the most grounded Atlantic storm since Felix in 2007, and said Matthew will approach Jamaica late Sunday night. It is relied upon to achieve the eastern part of the island on Monday. Jamaicans started getting out store racks as they loaded up crisis supplies and Prime Minister Andrew Holness on Friday assembled an earnest conference of Parliament to examine arrangements for the tempest. "I cleared out work to get a couple of things, candles, tin stuff, bread," 41-year-old Angella Wage said at a swarmed store in the Half Way Tree zone of the capital, Kingston. "We can never be excessively cautious." Evan Thompson, executive of Jamaica's National Meteorological Service, said the primary impacts of the tempest might be felt as right on time a...

The 2014 hurricane special focuses on what to do before, during and after a hurricane, early preparation, what to have in a hurricane survival kit. Experts will review storm facts and recap the 2013 hurricane season. National Hurricane Center's storm surge specialist, Jamie Rhome, also explains a fascinating new effort to forecast the amount of storm surge produced by hurricanes and a new storm surge graphic that shows how high the water might go as it moves inland.
