Douglass High School (Atlanta)

Frederick Douglass High School is a public school located in northwest Atlanta, Georgia, USA, bordering the Collier Heights and Center Hill communities.

History

Since 1968, Frederick Douglass High School has served the communities of Historic Collier Heights, Peyton Forest, Cascade Heights, Center Hill, and the city of Atlanta. Atlanta Public Schools established Douglass High School to relieve overcrowding at nearby Harper, Turner, and West Fulton High Schools. All three of these (as well as the defunct Archer High School) eventually merged with Douglass.

Over 1,200 students attend Douglass High School, making it one of the larger high schools in the Atlanta Public School System.

From 2002 to 2004 the school was renovated to update the main building and add a gymnasium and auditorium. These buildings honor former principals Lester W. Butts and Samuel L. Hill. In 2009, Frederick Douglass High School was listed in the National Historic Registry as one of the buildings in "The Collier Heights Historic District: Atlanta's Premier African American Suburb".

Douglass High School (Webster Groves, Missouri)

Douglass High School was a segregated high school in North Webster Groves, Missouri from 1926 until 1956. Named after abolitionist Frederick Douglass, the school served the area of North Webster, which had been settled by many black families after the Civil War.

The school was formed when the Webster Groves School District decided to stop paying tuition for students to attend the all-black Sumner High School, founded in 1875, which was miles away in St. Louis. So an elementary school, Douglass Elementary, dating from 1866, was expanded into a high school in the 1920s. Douglass High School was the only accredited public high school for African-American students in St. Louis County until the end of segregation in 1957.

Douglass High School (Memphis, Tennessee)

Douglass High School is a public high school in Memphis, USA, Tennessee, operated by the Memphis City Schools. Located in the African American Douglass neighborhood in North Memphis, it is named for Frederick Douglass, a 19th-century abolitionist.

The original Douglass High School was built in 1938. It burned to the ground and was replaced by a new building in 1946.

The school opened in 1946 and operated in the original Frederick Douglass High School building until 1981 when it closed. Closure occurred after cross-town busing for desegregation caused enrollment to plummet as African American students were bused out of the neighborhood, but few white students reciprocated by attending Douglass. Subsequently the school district used the building for storage, and it fell into a state of disrepair. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998, but was torn down in 2006 to be replaced by a new building.

The current building was started in 2006 and the new Douglass High School opened to students in fall 2008. The new Douglass School opened for the 2008-09 school year, with expected enrollment of at least 800 students. It is one of the oldest but newest Memphis City Schools, with a state-of-the-art 1,500-seat varsity gym, a 1,100-seat auditorium, football stadium (with a track) in the middle of Douglass Park, and baseball stadium at the northeast corner of Douglass Park. The school also has a garden that is named after former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt. The garden sits across the street from the school and is student built. The mascot is the Red Devil and colors are maroon, red and white. The school is expected to house the regular varsity sports and are expected to do well due to the amazing athletes from the community. The sports teams will consist of players from Craigmont who are from the community, the varsity basketball team will have two players from Bolton High School as well.

Atlanta was an American country music group formed in 1982 in Nashville, Tennessee, USA. It was composed of Brad Griffis (vocals), Bill Davidson (vocals, guitar), Tony Ingram (vocals, fiddle), Alan David (lead guitar), Allen Collay (keyboards), Bill Packard (keyboards), Jeff Baker (harmonica), Dick Stevens (bass guitar) and John Holder (drums). Between 1983 and 1988, Atlanta recorded two albums for MCA Records and charted nine hit singles on the Billboard country charts. Its chart history included two Top Ten country hits in "Atlanta Burned Again Last Night" and "Sweet Country Music." The latter was also the band's highest charting single, peaking at number 5.

Atlanta was formed in 1982 by Brad Griffis (Bass guitar), Bill Davidson (vocals, rhythm guitar), Tony Ingram (vocals, fiddle), Alan David (lead guitar), Allen Collay (keyboards), Bill Packard (keyboards), Jeff Baker (harmonica), Dick Stevens (vocals)) and John Holder (drums). Prior to the foundation, Ingram had recorded on Epic Records in the band Spurzz, and Stevens, Davidson, Griffis and David had previously toured as a re-establishment of The Vogues. The group was founded through the assistance of record producer Larry McBride, who had also launched the career of Alabama. With nine members, Atlanta was the largest country music band at the time.
