China is waging an aggressive campaign of seduction in the Caribbean, wooing countries away from relationships with rival Taiwan, opening markets for its expanding economy, promising to send tourists, and shipping police to Haiti in the first communist deployment in the Western Hemisphere. And the United States, China's Cold War enemy, is benignly watching the Asian economic superpower move into its backyard. For decades China and Taiwan used dollar diplomacy to win over small Caribbean nations where small projects building roads, bridges, wells and fisheries go a long way. But Beijing's growing economic clout is tipping the scales in the region. Caribbean trade with China increased 42 percent from 2003, the Chinese news agency Xinhua reported. The United States has applauded China's econ...

The history of the Dominican Republic is the result of an unlikely mixture of influences; nowhere else will you find a blending of European, African, and native Taíno Indian cultures. These distinct cultures still drive the social identity of the people today. Every aspect of their food, music, art, sports and religion provides a unique insight into the development of their country. In a single day you can experience both ancient and modern cultures from around the globe. Nowhere is this more evident than in their food. As a former Spanish Colony, many of its dishes carry a familiar Latin American feel. Lots of rice, beans, meat and seafood can be found in their cuisine. However, strong influences from its heritage give the meals a unique twist. Traditional Taíno dishes are still made feat...

We are in the town of Las Terrenas located in the Samaná province of the Dominican Republic. This is a walking tour of the town which starts on the Las Terranas main road and also includes a walk on the beach road. We where there in December and this is actually New Year (31/12). The video follows our walk up the main road where we try to give the viewer an idea of the atmosphere of this rather small Caribbean island fishing town. The main road offers tourists a limited number of shops, restaurants and excursion sale agents. On the beach road there are a few more restaurants and bars and also a very "limited" local shopping center. As tourists who enjoy visiting local towns in the destinations we visit we where rather disappointed with the Town of Las Terranas. Our opinion (just our opinio...

Gorgeous story on economic boom in Dominican Republic. Written and produced by Nery Ynclan.
The downward slide of Puerto Rico's economy through the past decade has started to impact migration patterns in the region. In recent years, there has been a reversal of the migration trend that has traditionally seen people from the Dominican Republic moving to Puerto Rico - within the larger trend of migrants from both countries moving toward the United States in search of employment opportunities, according to the Associated Press. The main migratory draw is the Dominican's stronger economy, which had a second consecutive growth year in 2015, growing by 7 percent. This makes it the strongest economy in the Latin American and Caribbean region, as the Washington Post reports, with particular strength in construction, banking and tourism. In contrast, Puerto Rico's economy has stagnated...

Culture Shock Series is a series of genuine, often amusing, sometimes sensitive, short videos exploring the culture and subcultures of the country we're currently visiting, from the mouth of the people who experience it daily. The way these videos were put together is by asking people to define or explain the topic at hand, unprompted. In this case it's the Dominican Republic and we're talking about food. We hope for these videos to generate a conversation, as many of the culture shock topics are, by definition, touchy subjects with complicated backgrounds. The views of the videos are not our own, but those of the people we interviewed. We tried to always sample a wide variety of views and opinions and kept everyone's answers. Please join into the conversation and check out the orig...

Over the last few decades, the Dominican Republic has changed the face of American baseball by churning out talented players whose humble beginnings have helped cultivate a unique passion for the game. That passion is often due to dire circumstances that drive all focus to the diamond instead of the classroom. The result is thousands of young Dominican men sacrificing their education and formative years for a 2% chance of making it to the big leagues. We sent Jaimie Sanchez to Boca Chica, a small, rural town that is home to the MLB's training camps to visit Junior Noboa. Junior is the head of Latin American Affairs for the Arizona Diamondbacks and has helped develop a digital education program for their young players. We also see Boca Chica through the eyes of two players who were forced ...

Travel video about destination Caribbean Islands. Haiti is the starting point of this journey in the Caribbean. Since the time of Columbus, it has been the European idyll of paradise set amid a distant ocean. But beyond the dream is the fact that its original inhabitants were wiped out and replaced with African slaves. Now independent states have gradually emerged from the dark shadows of an inglorious past. They inhabit a tropical world, an exotic Caribbean island that consists of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The Arawak Indians named the island, Hayti, Land of Mountains, and later Columbus changed the name to Hispanola.
