Xinjiang (Uyghur: شىنجاڭ, ULY: Shinjang; Mandarin pronunciation: [ɕíntɕjɑ́ŋ]; Chinese: 新疆; pinyin: Xīnjiāng), officially the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, is an autonomous region of China in the northwest of the country. It is the largest Chinese administrative division, the 8th largest country subdivision in the world, spanning over 1.6 million km2. It contains the disputed territory of Aksai Chin administered by China. Xinjiang borders the countries of Mongolia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India. The extremely rugged Karakoram, Kunlun, and Tian Shan mountain ranges occupy much of Xinjiang's borders, as well as its western and southern regions. Xinjiang also borders Tibet Autonomous Region and the provinces of Gansu and Qinghai. The most well-known route of the historical Silk Road ran through the territory from the east to its northwestern border. In recent decades, abundant oil and mineral reserves have been found in Xinjiang, and it is currently China's largest natural gas-producing region.

People in western China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region also celebrated the new year in the capital Urumqi. The festivities come after a tumultuous year, which saw a string of terrorist attacks. Just a day before New Year's Eve, nine terrorist suspects assaulted a public security bureau near the border town of Kashgar. As Han Peng reports, people in Xinjiang are now hoping for a peaceful 2014.

Please like: www.facebook.com/foodrangin I had a quick layover on my way back home to Chengdu from Istanbul in Urumqi. Ten years ago, Elise, an American college student, had no idea that the Uyghur people even existed in this world. Now, she is almost one of them. She speaks their language and lives like the locals. In Xinjiang, she recently participated in a televised singing competition, the results of which surprised both her and the captive audience. Meanwhile, she is conducting her research on the Uyghur performing arts, in the hopes to introduce them to more people in the West.

Josh goes off the beaten path in Xinjiang, China on his trip from Urumqi to Korla, exploring the gorgeous (but bumpy!) mountain pass. Read more: http://www.farwestchina.com/2016/05/xinjiang-road-trip-highway-216.html There are a number of ways to get from Urumqi to Korla in China's Xinjiang region. You can fly, take a train...or drive. Over the past few years the government has invested heavily into infrastructure, building smooth highways that go around the TianShan mountains to make the trip between the two cities quick and easy. Before this highway, however, drivers had to take the unpaved Highway 216 which climbs over the TianShan instead of around it. It's a shorter route but it takes longer. Thankfully, the scenery more than makes up for the trouble. Watch as Josh takes us on a dr...

Beyond the visible world, a mans body
Has chosen his place to live
His whole life was dead
And dead he chose to live
I will sing him a true song
A man like him must need
Im the dust, hes the sea
Singing out a song
Singing out for free
Singing for stranger
Because you are forsaken
Like all those little gods
Because good and bad
Are crying for desire
So I exchange my body for a song
So I exchange my body for a song
So I exchange my body for a song
Thats why we all
Beyond the world
We chose to live
Thats what we need
Singing free
Singing free
Thats what we need
Because you are forsaken
Like all those little gods up high
Because good and bad
Are crying for desired ones
So I exchange my body for a song
So I exchange my body for a song
So I exchange my body for a song
A little while, a little while
Thats why we all
Beyond the world
We chose to live
Thats what we need
Singing free
