South Sudan became the world's youngest nation in July 2011, but despite independence the country went to conflict again two years later, when civil war broke out - leaving tens of thousands dead, more than two million people displaced and an economy in ruins. In 2013, former rebel leader and vice president Riek Machar was sacked by President Salva Kiir in a cabinet purge. Later that year, Kiir accused him of plotting a coup, which prompted Machar to flee the capital, Juba. Machar denied the allegation, but the incident triggered South Sudan's vicious civil war. After protracted negotiations by regional mediators, a peace deal was achieved between both sides in August last year and Machar has been sworn in again as vice president. South Sudan’s president came out in public today to refute rumors of his death. South Sudan has been on high tension for bout 24 hours as rumors of the president dying spread around the country. Some civilians fled their homes and abandoned their businesses out of fear of eruption of violence after the rumors. President Kiir said the rumors were instigated by anti-peace elements. It was first of its kind for the president to appear in the public and many people were exciting by seeing the president on the top of the car waving to them.

South Sudan’s president Salva Kiir inaugurated the transitional parliament of the country. The step comes in line with a peace agreement signed last year in August, though the formation comes 9 months later than was scheduled according to the agreement’s timeline. President Kiir took the chance when addressing the members of parliament and diplomats who attended the inauguration to address several issues such as the additional forces authorized by the United Nations Security Council to the UN mission in South Sudan, the allegations of rape by his soldiers and the country’s ravaged economy.
