The Golden Rule or ethic of reciprocity is a moral maxim or principle of altruism found in many human cultures and religions, suggesting it may be related to a fundamental human nature. The maxim may appear as either a positive or negative injunction governing conduct:
The Golden Rule differs from the maxim of reciprocity captured in do ut des - "I give so that you will give in return" - and is rather a unilateral moral commitment to the well-being of the other without the expectation of anything in return.
The concept occurs in some form in nearly every religion and ethical tradition. It can also be explained from the perspectives of psychology, philosophy, sociology, and economics. Psychologically, it involves a person empathizing with others. Philosophically, it involves a person perceiving their neighbor also as "I" or "self". Sociologically, 'love your neighbor as yourself' is applicable between individuals, between groups, and also between individuals and groups. In economics, Richard Swift, referring to ideas from David Graeber, suggests that "without some kind of reciprocity society would no longer be able to exist."
Biffy Clyro are a Scottish rock band that formed in Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire, composed of Simon Neil (guitar, lead vocals), James Johnston (bass, vocals) and Ben Johnston (drums, vocals). Currently signed to 14th Floor Records, they have released six studio albums, three of which (Puzzle, Only Revolutions and Opposites) reached the top five in the UK Albums Chart, with their sixth studio album Opposites claiming their first UK number one album.
After their first three albums, the band expanded their following significantly in 2007 with the release of their fourth, Puzzle, creating more mainstream songs with simpler rhythms and distancing themselves from the more unusual dissonant style that was present in their previous three albums. Puzzle peaked at number 2 on the official UK album charts on 16 June 2007. The album went Gold in the UK, selling over 100,000 units, and later in 2012 went Platinum in the UK, having sold over 300,000 copies.
Their 2009 album, Only Revolutions, reached No. 3 in the UK chart and went gold within days of its release in 2009, going platinum later in 2010 and receiving a Mercury Music Prize nomination. Only Revolutions included the UK hit singles, "Mountains", "That Golden Rule" and "Many of Horror" all of which reached the UK Top Ten. The latter reached number eight on the UK Singles Chart after The X Factor 2010 winner Matt Cardle covered the song, and became the UK number one Christmas single for the year of 2010.
In mathematics, two quantities are in the golden ratio if their ratio is the same as the ratio of their sum to the larger of the two quantities. The figure on the right illustrates the geometric relationship. Expressed algebraically, for quantities a and b with a > b > 0,
where the Greek letter phi ( or ) represents the golden ratio. Its value is:
The golden ratio also is called the golden mean or golden section (Latin: sectio aurea). Other names include extreme and mean ratio, medial section, divine proportion, divine section (Latin: sectio divina), golden proportion, golden cut, and golden number.
Some twentieth-century artists and architects, including Le Corbusier and Dalí, have proportioned their works to approximate the golden ratio—especially in the form of the golden rectangle, in which the ratio of the longer side to the shorter is the golden ratio—believing this proportion to be aesthetically pleasing. The golden ratio appears in some patterns in nature, including the spiral arrangement of leaves and other plant parts.
"That Golden Rule" is the second single to be taken from Scottish alternative rock trio Biffy Clyro's fifth studio album, Only Revolutions, released on 23 August 2009.
The band describe the song as a mixture of prog and stoner rock, citing that "[it's] like Kyuss and Tool playing with some Scottish freaks screaming over the top of it". It received its first radio play in early July 2009, on Zane Lowe's Hottest Record in the World slot on Radio 1. The single debuted at #10 on the UK Single Chart on 30 August 2009. The song was used by Sky Sports in its coverage of Super League from 2011 to 2013.
The video for That Golden Rule was shot in Chiswick House, West London. The video was released on NME's official website on 22 July 2009. The video has begun to receive some airplay on British rock television station Scuzz, and has been A-listed by BBC Radio 1.
Storm Thorgerson's artwork for the single references the band's previous studio album, Puzzle, with a missing jigsaw piece resting in front of a sailor. The other man, sailing into the distance, appears to have a jigsaw shaped hole in his side - it is likely that this represents the man depicted on the front cover of Puzzle.

This rule has also been called the "Ethic of Reciprocity". Which states: "One should treat others as one would like others to treat one's self". Or as you've no doubt heard it said: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". This is essentially why we have traditions like exchanging gifts. There is actually a second part to this rule that is considered cautionary. One should NOT treat others in ways that one would not like to be treated, this portion of the Golden Rule is also known as the Silver Rule. None of us want to be lied to, cheated on, or stolen from. So it makes sense for us NOT to lie, cheat, or steal. Though often claimed by Christianity, many other religions got it right too. The concept of the Golden Rule is found in writings of Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, ...
The Golden Rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” is something many of us learned as children. In fact, many cultures have a similar version. This talk will explore the limitations of the rule with regard to equity, diversity, cross-cultural communications and inclusion. An updated rule will be introduced along with the conditions necessary to fulfill it. Round and round the road we go again
Where we started, nobody knows
It's a cold, cold world, it's a cold, cold world
How can we stop the changes going in America today
Come back, come back to the golden rule
Come back, come back to the golden rule
Round and round the streets we go
Still see the same old thing
They still keep building more prisons
To take our kids away
Why can't we show more love to make this a better day, oh
Come back, come back to the golden rule
Come back, come back to the golden rule
The golden rule is love, my brothers
The golden rule, oh, is love, my sisters
Now you know what I'm talking about
Now you feel my heart and know I'm for real
Look into your souls and know that the truth lies within the same
Find the love that loves a woman's sister
