Elena Ferrante is an Italian novelist whose true identity is not publicly known. Despite being very famous in North America, she has kept her identity secret since the publication of her first novel in 1992.
Ferrante is the author of a half dozen novels, the best known of which is Days of Abandonment (I giorni dell'abbandono). Her "Neapolitan Novels", a series about two perceptive and intelligent girls from Naples who try to create lives for themselves within a violent and stultifying culture, consist of My Brilliant Friend,The Story of a New Name (2013), Those Who Leave And Those Who Stay (2014), and The Story of the Lost Child, which was nominated for the Strega Prize, an Italian literary award.
Two of Ferrante's novels have been turned into films. Troubling Love (L'amore molesto) became the feature film Nasty Love directed by Mario Martone, while The Days of Abandonment became a film of the same title directed by Roberto Faenza. In her nonfiction book Fragments (La frantumaglia 2003), Ferrante speaks of her experiences as a writer.
Writer and illustrator Joanna Walsh gives a brief overview of Elena Ferrante and her work, and reads a striking passage from Ferrante's 'Days of Abandonment'. Elena Ferrante has long been considered one of the best writers of her generation in Italy, but now her novels and acclaim have spread across the United States and around the world. Her Neapolitan Novels are beautifully and expertly translated by Ann Goldstein, and Ferrante's ardent fans range from everyone from James Wood to Gwyneth Paltrow. And to Pulitzer Prize winner Jhumpa Lahiri. We were honored to present this very special evening with Ann Goldstein and Jhumpa Lahiri in conversation about the power, beauty and ferocity of Ferrante's writing, with a special focus on the final novel of the series, "The Story of the Lost Child" (Europa Editions).
Presented as part of The Literary Mews - a festival within the PEN World Voices Festival Award-winning translator Ann Goldstein (The New Yorker) and NYU professor Rebecca Falkoff will discuss the anonymous Italian author, whose devastatingly honest novels—particularly the epic Neapolitan tetralogy—have moved readers to a rare and visceral passion. Their dialogue will reflect upon the powerful emotions narrated and elicited by the novels. Ann Goldstein will speak about her work as a translator, and about the ways in which the novels foreground translation through references to dialect. Rebecca Falkoff will talk about the cultural context of Ferrante's work, and the different reception of the Neapolitan novels in Italy and the United States.
