Typhoon Chaba to brush southeastern Korea after lashing Jeju

For the first time this year, Korea is feeling the direct impact of a typhoon. Typhoon Chaba is named after a tropical flower, but it's not nearly as delicate. Let's connect with our Hwang Hojun for updates on this storm and the path it's expected to take. So Hojun, Typhoon Chaba... it's a big one... You're absolutely right, Mark. As of 11 a.m. Korea time, Typhoon Chaba had reached Busan, and is moving northwest at a speed of about 60 kilometers an hour toward the East Sea. Its maximum wind speed is around one-hundred-26 kilometers an hour. It has weakened to a smaller-size typhoon since Monday when the U.S. Joint Typhoon Warning center estimated Chaba had become a super typhoon with sustained winds at the time of roughly 265 kilometers per hour. However, it's still considered a powerful storm and a typhoon warning has been issued across the south coast of the peninsula, including Jeju, Busan and Ulsan. A typhoon advisory is also in place for most of the Gyeongsang-do and Jeolla-do provinces. Jeju has received the hardest blow so far as Chaba battered the island throughout the night. Wind gusts in mountain areas were recorded as high as 200 kilometers an hour... accompanied by heavy rain -- more than 500 millimeters so far. Due to the typhoon, more than 25 thousand Jeju households suffered a power outage during the night, and one apparent fisherman went missing after falling off a docked boat. A crane at a construction site in Busan collapsed due the wind, killing two people. In Yeosu, a ferry boat collided with a breakwater and two crewmen were swept away by the waves, but were rescued by the Coastguard within 20 minutes. All ship routes are suspended at this moment. Concerning air travel, about 65-hundred passengers are stranded in Jeju International Airport, as more than 40 flights have been grounded since seven a.m. Some 36 flights have been canceled at Gimhae Airport near Busan due to the typhoon. Hojun, it's unusual for Korea to experience such a strong Typhoon in October, in fact, this is the first one in three years. How long will it take for the storm to pass? Well, the typhoon is accelerating and weakening in strength as it travels into the East Sea. The typhoon's trajectory has it reaching Dokdo in the East Sea late this afternoon, and then crossing the sea to Japan by Thursday morning, at which point it's likely to be downgraded to a tropical depression. However, as the heavy rain could trigger flash floods and landslides, both Korea and Japan are closely monitoring Chaba's progression. Back to you, Mark. Jeju Island Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Jeju Island in South Korea. Around a hundred kilometres off South Korea’s southern coast and lapped by the waves of the East China Sea is Jeju Island, an extraordinary holiday paradise situated on a volcanic island with temples, waterfalls, tee plantations and several leisure facilities. In the middle of the north coast is Jeju-Si, the island’s capital city. The first thing that catches the eye is Yongduam Rock that is situated on the city’s western periphery. It is an unusual lava formation that resembles a dragon’s head. The National Museum features the island’s history and culture including the clothing of the first settlers and the boats that first brought them to the island. The nearby fishing village of Haenyed boasts a special attraction, the island’s famous female divers. For generations these courageous women have dived to a depth of twenty metres for shells and seaweed without breathing apparatus and go for two minutes without breathing. On the western heights of the south coast is the Songaksan Crater, an extinct volcano whose slopes are covered with green vegetation. The steep coast and rocky bay indicate that powerful eruptions once took place there and perhaps the volcano’s benign appearance may only be a momentary lapse in the geological history of the island. Jeju Island is a remarkable place and well worth a visit!

Typhoon Chaba heading toward southern Korea after slamming Jeju Island

Our top story this morning... After slamming into Jeju Island,... Typhoon Chaba is heading north,... prompting typhoon alerts in Korea's southern port city of Busan and in Ulsan. The Korea Meteorological Administration says... the cities are expected to see up to 250 millimeters of rain... with strong winds of up to 30 meters per second. Around nine-hundred ships have been evacuated from the port of Ulsan. The typhoon is forecast to pass Busan around noon today. Chaba has been pounding Korea's southern resort island of Jeju since late Tuesday,... canceling and rescheduling scores of flights and cruise ship tours. Jeju is expected to see up to four-hundred millimeters of rain. More than 16-hundred homes on Jeju are without electricity after trees collapsed on to power lines. Summer Korea Vlog ☀️ 5 Days in Jeju Island & Seoul

Overall, it was a pretty short stay in both cities, but we had lots of fun! Jeju Province

Jeju Province (officially the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province) is one of the nine provinces of South Korea. The province is situated on and coterminous with the nation's largest island of Jeju (also Jejudo), formerly transliterated as Cheju, Cheju Do, etc., or known as Quelpart to Europeans. The island lies in the Korea Strait, southwest of South Jeolla Province, of which it was a part before it became a separate province in 1946. Its capital is Jeju City.

History

Early history

According to legend, three demi-gods emerged from Samsung which is said to have been on the northern slopes of Mt. Halla and became the progenitors of the Jeju people who founded the Kingdom of Tamna.

It has also been claimed that three brothers—including Ko-hu—who were the 15th descendants of Koulla, one of the Progenitors of the Jeju people, were received by the court of Silla, at which time the name Tamna was officially recognized, while the official government posts of Commander, Prince and Governor were conferred by the court upon the three. However, there is no concrete evidence of when the "Three Names" (Samseong-Ko, Yang and Pu) appeared nor for the exact date of when Ko-hu and his brothers were received by Silla. It may be supposed that the "Three Names" Founding Period occurred during the Three Kingdoms (Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla) Period on the mainland of Korea.

For the first time this year, Korea is feeling the direct impact of a typhoon. Typhoon Chaba is named after a tropical flower, but it's not nearly as delicate. Let's connect with our Hwang Hojun for updates on this storm and the path it's expected to take. So Hojun, Typhoon Chaba... it's a big one... You're absolutely right, Mark. As of 11 a.m. Korea time, Typhoon Chaba had reached Busan, and is moving northwest at a speed of about 60 kilometers an hour toward the East Sea. Its maximum wind speed is around one-hundred-26 kilometers an hour. It has weakened to a smaller-size typhoon since Monday when the U.S. Joint Typhoon Warning center estimated Chaba had become a super typhoon with sustained winds at the time of roughly 265 kilometers per hour. However, it's still considered a powerful storm and a typhoon warning has been issued across the south coast of the peninsula, including Jeju, Busan and Ulsan. A typhoon advisory is also in place for most of the Gyeongsang-do and Jeolla-do provinces. Jeju has received the hardest blow so far as Chaba battered the island throughout the night. Wind gusts in mountain areas were recorded as high as 200 kilometers an hour... accompanied by heavy rain -- more than 500 millimeters so far. Due to the typhoon, more than 25 thousand Jeju households suffered a power outage during the night, and one apparent fisherman went missing after falling off a docked boat. A crane at a construction site in Busan collapsed due the wind, killing two people. In Yeosu, a ferry boat collided with a breakwater and two crewmen were swept away by the waves, but were rescued by the Coastguard within 20 minutes. All ship routes are suspended at this moment. Concerning air travel, about 65-hundred passengers are stranded in Jeju International Airport, as more than 40 flights have been grounded since seven a.m. Some 36 flights have been canceled at Gimhae Airport near Busan due to the typhoon. Hojun, it's unusual for Korea to experience such a strong Typhoon in October, in fact, this is the first one in three years. How long will it take for the storm to pass? Well, the typhoon is accelerating and weakening in strength as it travels into the East Sea. The typhoon's trajectory has it reaching Dokdo in the East Sea late this afternoon, and then crossing the sea to Japan by Thursday morning, at which point it's likely to be downgraded to a tropical depression. However, as the heavy rain could trigger flash floods and landslides, both Korea and Japan are closely monitoring Chaba's progression. Back to you, Mark. Travel video about destination Jeju Island in South Korea. Around a hundred kilometres off South Korea’s southern coast and lapped by the waves of the East China Sea is Jeju Island, an extraordinary holiday paradise situated on a volcanic island with temples, waterfalls, tee plantations and several leisure facilities. In the middle of the north coast is Jeju-Si, the island’s capital city. The first thing that catches the eye is Yongduam Rock that is situated on the city’s western periphery. It is an unusual lava formation that resembles a dragon’s head. The National Museum features the island’s history and culture including the clothing of the first settlers and the boats that first brought them to the island. The nearby fishing village of Haenyed boasts a special attraction, the island’s famous female divers. For generations these courageous women have dived to a depth of twenty metres for shells and seaweed without breathing apparatus and go for two minutes without breathing. On the western heights of the south coast is the Songaksan Crater, an extinct volcano whose slopes are covered with green vegetation. The steep coast and rocky bay indicate that powerful eruptions once took place there and perhaps the volcano’s benign appearance may only be a momentary lapse in the geological history of the island. Jeju Island is a remarkable place and well worth a visit!

For the first time this year, Korea is feeling the direct impact of a typhoon. Typhoon Chaba is named after a tropical flower, but it's not nearly as delicate. Let's connect with our Hwang Hojun for updates on this storm and the path it's expected to take. So Hojun, Typhoon Chaba... it's a big one... You're absolutely right, Mark. As of 11 a.m. Korea time, Typhoon Chaba had reached Busan, and is moving northwest at a speed of about 60 kilometers an hour toward the East Sea. Its maximum wind speed is around one-hundred-26 kilometers an hour. It has weakened to a smaller-size typhoon since Monday when the U.S. Joint Typhoon Warning center estimated Chaba had become a super typhoon with sustained winds at the time of roughly 265 kilometers per hour. However, it's still considered a powerful storm and a typhoon warning has been issued across the south coast of the peninsula, including Jeju, Busan and Ulsan. A typhoon advisory is also in place for most of the Gyeongsang-do and Jeolla-do provinces. Jeju has received the hardest blow so far as Chaba battered the island throughout the night. Wind gusts in mountain areas were recorded as high as 200 kilometers an hour... accompanied by heavy rain -- more than 500 millimeters so far. Due to the typhoon, more than 25 thousand Jeju households suffered a power outage during the night, and one apparent fisherman went missing after falling off a docked boat. A crane at a construction site in Busan collapsed due the wind, killing two people. In Yeosu, a ferry boat collided with a breakwater and two crewmen were swept away by the waves, but were rescued by the Coastguard within 20 minutes. All ship routes are suspended at this moment. Concerning air travel, about 65-hundred passengers are stranded in Jeju International Airport, as more than 40 flights have been grounded since seven a.m. Some 36 flights have been canceled at Gimhae Airport near Busan due to the typhoon. Hojun, it's unusual for Korea to experience such a strong Typhoon in October, in fact, this is the first one in three years. How long will it take for the storm to pass? Well, the typhoon is accelerating and weakening in strength as it travels into the East Sea. The typhoon's trajectory has it reaching Dokdo in the East Sea late this afternoon, and then crossing the sea to Japan by Thursday morning, at which point it's likely to be downgraded to a tropical depression. For generations these courageous women have dived to a depth of twenty metres for shells and seaweed without breathing apparatus and go for two minutes without breathing. On the western heights of the south coast is the Songaksan Crater, an extinct volcano whose slopes are covered with green vegetation. The steep coast and rocky bay indicate that powerful eruptions once took place there and perhaps the volcano’s benign appearance may only be a momentary lapse in the geological history of the island. Around nine-hundred ships have been evacuated from the port of Ulsan. The typhoon is forecast to pass Busan around noon today. Chaba has been pounding Korea's southern resort island of Jeju since late Tuesday,... canceling and rescheduling scores of flights and cruise ship tours. Overall, it was a pretty short stay in both cities, but we had lots of fun! Disclaimer: My family is not very outdoorsy (our main concerns are eating, shopping, and sleeping) so we skipped all the hikes and trails on Jeju. In this KOREA 360° episode, we visited the old Boseong Market (보성시장) in Jeju City. This old market is known for its soondae, which is a type of Korean blood sausage. The market itself was once a thriving and bustling place for locals to go and eat food and buy produce. But over time, as big corporate supermarkets starting popping up everywhere, it killed the energy and vibe of the market slowly. The market is now in an active state of trying to revitalize their menus and other things in order to attract a new generation of people to come and keep the market alive. In this KOREA 360° episode, we visited the old Boseong Market (보성시장) in Jeju City. This old market is known for its soondae, which is a type of Korean blood sausage. The market itself was once a thriving and bustling place for locals to go and eat food and buy produce. But over time, as big corporate supermarkets starting popping up everywhere, it killed the energy and vibe of the market slowly. The market is now in an active state of trying to revitalize their menus and other things in order to attract a new generation of people to come and keep the market alive. We arrived at Boseong Market around 3pm, which was 2 hours before the festival started so many of the shops and streets were completely empty. We decided that it would probably be fine to film this, because once the festival started, maybe it would be too loud to film and you viewers wouldn't be able to hear us properly. Don't worry though, we came back a few hours later to capture an nice traditional panseori song with local old people dancing in front of the stage. What an awesome moment! For the first time this year, Korea is feeling the direct impact of a typhoon. Typhoon Chaba is named after a tropical flower, but it's not nearly as delicate. Let's connect with our Hwang Hojun for updates on this storm and the path it's expected to take. So Hojun, Typhoon Chaba... it's a big one... You're absolutely right, Mark. As of 11 a.m. Korea time, Typhoon Chaba had reached Busan, and is moving northwest at a speed of about 60 kilometers an hour toward the East Sea. Its maximum wind speed is around one-hundred-26 kilometers an hour. It has weakened to a smaller-size typhoon since Monday when the U.S. Joint Typhoon Warning center estimated Chaba had become a super typhoon with sustained winds at the time of roughly 265 kilometers per hour. However, it's still considered a powerful storm and a typhoon warning has been issued across the south coast of the peninsula, including Jeju, Busan and Ulsan. A typhoon advisory is also in place for most of the Gyeongsang-do and Jeolla-do provinces. Jeju has received the hardest blow so far as Chaba battered the island throughout the night. Wind gusts in mountain areas were recorded as high as 200 kilometers an hour... accompanied by heavy rain -- more than 500 millimeters so far. Due to the typhoon, more than 25 thousand Jeju households suffered a power outage during the night, and one apparent fisherman went missing after falling off a docked boat. A crane at a construction site in Busan collapsed due the wind, killing two people. In Yeosu, a ferry boat collided with a breakwater and two crewmen were swept away by the waves, but were rescued by the Coastguard within 20 minutes. All ship routes are suspended at this moment. Concerning air travel, about 65-hundred passengers are stranded in Jeju International Airport, as more than 40 flights have been grounded since seven a.m. Some 36 flights have been canceled at Gimhae Airport near Busan due to the typhoon. Hojun, it's unusual for Korea to experience such a strong Typhoon in October, in fact, this is the first one in three years. How long will it take for the storm to pass? Well, the typhoon is accelerating and weakening in strength as it travels into the East Sea. The typhoon's trajectory has it reaching Dokdo in the East Sea late this afternoon, and then crossing the sea to Japan by Thursday morning, at which point it's likely to be downgraded to a tropical depression. However, as the heavy rain could trigger flash floods and landslides, both Korea and Japan are closely monitoring Chaba's progression. Back to you, Mark. Travel video about destination Jeju Island in South Korea. Around a hundred kilometres off South Korea’s southern coast and lapped by the waves of the East China Sea is Jeju Island, an extraordinary holiday paradise situated on a volcanic island with temples, waterfalls, tee plantations and several leisure facilities. In the middle of the north coast is Jeju-Si, the island’s capital city. The first thing that catches the eye is Yongduam Rock that is situated on the city’s western periphery. It is an unusual lava formation that resembles a dragon’s head. The National Museum features the island’s history and culture including the clothing of the first settlers and the boats that first brought them to the island. The nearby fishing village of Haenyed boasts a special attraction, the island’s famous female divers. For generations these courageous women have dived to a depth of twenty metres for shells and seaweed without breathing apparatus and go for two minutes without breathing. On the western heights of the south coast is the Songaksan Crater, an extinct volcano whose slopes are covered with green vegetation. The steep coast and rocky bay indicate that powerful eruptions once took place there and perhaps the volcano’s benign appearance may only be a momentary lapse in the geological history of the island. Jeju Island is a remarkable place and well worth a visit!

Overall, it was a pretty short stay in both cities, but we had lots of fun! Disclaimer: My family is not very outdoorsy (our main concerns are eating, shopping, and sleeping) so we skipped all the hikes and trails on Jeju. In this KOREA 360° episode, we visited the old Boseong Market (보성시장) in Jeju City. This old market is known for its soondae, which is a type of Korean blood sausage. The market itself was once a thriving and bustling place for locals to go and eat food and buy produce. But over time, as big corporate supermarkets starting popping up everywhere, it killed the energy and vibe of the market slowly. The market is now in an active state of trying to revitalize their menus and other things in order to attract a new generation of people to come and keep the market alive. We arrived at Boseong Market around 3pm, which was 2 hours before the festival started so many of the shops and streets were completely empty. We decided that it would probably be fine to film this, because once the festival started, maybe it would be too loud to film and you viewers wouldn't be able to hear us properly. Don't worry though, we came back a few hours later to capture an nice traditional panseori song with local old people dancing in front of the stage. What an awesome moment!
