This week Venezuelans are lining up to validate their signatures on a recall referendum for President Maduro. Among the reasons for Maduro's unpopularity is that more and more people are starting to wonder where their next meal is coming from. These days, those who have enough Venezuelan currency (now trading at 1,000 bolivars to the dollar on the black market) to buy food often have a hard time finding any. But his business needs American dollars to import products made in China. He is unable to exchange Venezuelan money for dollars at the official exchange rate of about 6.5 bolivares to the dollar. He says the supply of dollars is even limited on the black market, where dollars cost much more. He says that is why business at his store is down. Venezuela has the highest rate of inflation in South America. In February, Venezuela reduced the value of its currency by one third, which has made imports more costly. The economic troubles have resulted in shortages of products -- from necessities like food to beauty prod...

Caracas is a city with a population over three million, crammed into a valley in northern Venezuela. Over 2000-2010, Venezuela's oil revenues did not compensate for mismanagement of the city. The city's infrastructure deteriorated and Caracas residents are increasingly entrenched in slum areas. As of 2011, there was still no clear plan regarding how crime, poverty and severe traffic problems could be eradicated from the city. The city of Caracas receives preferential treatment in Venezuela's economy, as Venezuela's oil-generated revenues are used to subsidise the city's development. Caracas' population growth is driven entirely by natural increase, as the city is too packed to accommodate further immigration. Housing in Caracas accounts for a relatively small share of the household budg...

The Venezuelan government continues to position people's military commandos throughout the country to combat what is known as the "economic war" against the South American nation. These groups, a product of the nation's military-civil union, have the objectives of guaranteeing sufficient food for the people, eliminating speculation in the prices of basic food products, and working to reduce long lines. teleSUR. http://multimedia.telesurtv.net/v/venezuela-comandos-populares-herramienta-contra-guerra-economica-en/
On October 29th, The Center for Security Policy’s Menges Hemispheric Security Project convened its fourth annual Latin America Symposium on Capitol Hill. The half-day program focused on two issues: 1) the domestic repression and foreign adventurism of Cuba’s Castro regime in the wake of President Obama’s normalization of relations with Havana and 2) the rapidly deteriorating political, economic and security situation with regard to the one-time patron, now client of Cuba: Venezuela.

Colombia Destination Guide Bound by both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, the equatorial South American country of Colombia has had a turbulent recent history with its natural beauty and archaeological sites overshadowed by the prevalence of violence stemming from cocaine trafficking and civil conflict. The diverse landscape offers a variety of climates and experiences ranging from Amazon jungles to sun-soaked beaches and modern cities to ancient ruins. While some areas of Colombia are still considered too dangerous for tourists to venture to, if you stick to the urban cities such as Bogota and Medellin and provincial capitals, while taking precautions and adhering to common sense, the country is relatively safe. If in doubt, be sure to check the current government warnings for an...

In BLACKOUT, a series made possible by Jigsaw, VICE News takes viewers across the globe, from Pakistan to Belarus, to examine technology's role in the ongoing fight for free expression. Watch the rest of the series here: http://bit.ly/1UNxdKP In most democratic countries, a free press plays a critical role in restraining government power and blowing the whistle on abuses of authority. In Venezuela, however, members of the media have long been subject to censorship and threats. The Venezuelan government has recently cracked down on independent newspapers and radio networks in an effort to silence any voices critical of the ruling left-wing party. In the lead-up to last year's elections, VICE News was on the ground in Venezuela with the activist journalists who are fighting against the c...
On The Listening Post this week: Protests in the streets of Venezuela and a battle of narratives in the media. Plus, the Greek newspaper few thought would survive. Venezuela: The battle over news coverage With pressure intensifying for Venezuela's government, President Nicolas Maduro is tightening the screws on the media yet again. He is also encouraging his supporters to take their message online, but the battle to control the cyber narrative is not easier. On our radar: The Washington Post goes against its own source and says US President Barack Obama should not pardon the actions of whistleblower Edward Snowden. Mexico remains one of the most deadly places for journalists as two more reporters were killed in just three days. The Guardian newspaper's announcement to cut more jobs in...
From above, Caracas' skyline still hints at the opulence that once characterised oil-rich Venezuela, but at ground level there's no hiding today's reality: people are queuing all night for food and medicine; inflation is with over 700 percent the highest in the world; and murders and kidnappings are spiralling out of control. Venezuelans who can, are fleeing their country, once a magnet for immigrants. And with a political confrontation mounting steadily, many warn that the nation with one of the world's largest oil reserves is on the edge of an abyss. Political violence against opponents of the populist government of President Nicolas Maduro is intensifying, but it's common crime which is terrifying most Venezuelans, no matter what their beliefs or social class. Venezuela is now one ...

I met her in Venezuela
With a basket on her head
And if she loved others she didn't say
But I knew she do, to pass away the time in Venezuela
Pass away the time in Venezuela
I gave her a sash of blue
A beautiful sash of blue
Because I knew that she could do with all the tricks, I
knew she knew
To pass away the time in Venezuela
And when the wind was out to sea, the wind was out to sea
And she was taking leave of me
I said sheer up there'll always be
Sailors on shore on leave in Venezuela
Her linger was changed but the thought of her beautiful
smile
The thought of her beautiful smile
Will haunt me and taunt me for many a mile
She was my gal and she did the wale
