Seven climbers trying to scale the slopes of Mount Hood fall into a crevasse resulting in the deaths of three climbers. Then the rescue operation goes wrong, causing the crash of a rescue helicopter.
What a great way to spend a spring day in Oregon. I drove scenic highway 26 to the historic Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood. I'd seen it before but never in person. I remember it as the exterior of the Overlook Hotel in Stanley Kubrick's movie version of "The Shining." After a brief stop at the Lodge for pictures, I took off for Mirror Lake. I hiked the popular Mirror Lake Trail in the Mount Hood National Forest to find the source of the world-famous lakeside photos of Mount Hood and, thankfully, avoided any encounter with bears. It was an easy three-mile hike. Just Great!
Girlfriend and I on the summit ridge of Mt. Hood, up through the Old Chute on a south side ascent. - May, 2014 This video is a bit different for my main subsribers, but showcases one of my main hobbies. Katherine and I are avid climbers (rock and mountain) and most recently summited Kilimanjaro in East Africa, Taznaia. Filmed on a GoPro Black +

We had a beautiful day summiting Mt. Hood; clear skies, minimal wind, great snow conditions, and it wasn't overly crowded. We climbed the standard south side route, going up past Devil's Kitchen, over the Hogsback, and down and through the Hot Rocks. This allowed a straight shot up the last slope instead of having to traverse once you get to the bergschrund. Closer to the top we decided to skip the conga line of rope teams going through the Mazama Chute and made the catwalk via the Old Chute. After a relaxing summit rest we descended via the Mazama Chute, just to mix things up, and its a good thing we did because we witnessed a woman fall coming down the Old Chute. Luckily she was roped up and her team managed to arrest the fall. This is also why we didn't rope up, too many other people ...
A layout of what the damages would be on the surrounding landscape if Mt. Hood erupted like Mt. St. Helens did. Music is by Sofeinberg Muskkikorps. Pictures gotten from usgs.gov (unless they look like they were done by an amateur, in which case they're mine). Other sources listed in the video. No copyright infringement is intended.
A season at Mt hood meadows.
This is on top of the old pipeline. This is Hood River in Hood River, Oregon. There are some rapids in the river to the left. It's the Hood River Penstock Flume Pipeline Trail. At 0:11 the walkway slopes up to stay on top of the original bridge. The tracks aren't visible in this video, but at the left where it's flat beyond the first row of trees is the Mount Hood Railroad. At 0:33 is another slope on the walkway. At 0:50 to the right is a way to climb down to the river. There's also an open gate ahead. Then the battery on my gimbal dies so the video is crooked. Notice the gate has a sign warning of velociraptors.
The "Gunsight Rock" promontory at Hood Mountain Regional Park & Preserve in the Sonoma Valley offers one of the most expansive and stunning perspectives on the Sonoma County landscape. On a clear day you can see south to San Francisco Bay, west past Santa Rosa to the Pacific Ocean, and northwest to the Russian River Valley. Plan your hike at sonomacountyparks.org.

Situation Critical is a documentary television series. Produced in conjunction with the National Geographic Channel, the series examines various disasters or violent incidents. It replaced Seconds from Disaster, a similar program with a more forensic approach. On Oregon's majestic mountain, one misstep causes nine climbers fall into a gaping crevasse, killing three instantly. Watch as the survivors, some badly injured, fight to escape
This is the Mount Hood Railroad from Hood River to Odell for the fall colors excursion. This is looking out the west side before the U turn the out the east side after the U turn. At the beginning of part 6 we're stopped in Odell along Neal Creek Road. At 1:05 that curving road is Stadelman Drive. At 2:33 that curved road is still Stadelman Drive. At 2:48 there is a freight car. At 4:14 is Chevron Drive. At the end of part 6 is as far south as the trains go this time of year.
Jule Gilfillan explores the history, challenges and rewards of climbing our highest peak.
October 24, 2015: Fall colors view from a "non-glassed" vestibule window aboard the Mt. Hood Railroad 22 mile short line from Hood River, OR to Parkdale, OR. This is still an active freight line that offers scenic passenger rides with vintage restored rail cars (including a full length dome car) on the weekends. The entire line is jointed rail and speed restricted to 10 MPH.

Throwin' you 'round
Mind ideas
Highway crawl, the nations die
Halfway home an all new wind
That wind hands an all new sin
Steeples built upon their graves
Ready to climb the ruins we founded
Whispering loud and clear the secret unsafe
Mind ideas
They're my dears
Highway sprawled, the nations die
Halfway home an all new wind
That wind hands an all new sin
Steeples built upon their graves
Every life loom we're marching through
Desire finds its way home to you
Desire finds its way back to you
