Jupiter Hotel (Portland, Oregon)

The Jupiter Hotel is a converted, mid-20th century motor inn boutique hotel located in Portland, Oregon, USA. It has been described as a "party hotel" and has been compared to the Standard Hotels in Los Angeles.

History

The hotel was once a two-story 1960's motor lodge motel. After major renovations, it reopened as the Jupiter Hotel in October 2004. During its renovation, the old motel's parking lot was transformed into a courtyard and the entire building was painted white. All rooms were completely renovated, along with the addition of the DreamSUITE and three event spaces: the DreamBOX, ThinkTANK and DreamTENT.

The hotel is part of a larger effort to "revive" the area surrounding Burnside Avenue east of the Willamette River.

Description

The hotel complex consists of white, two-story buildings that surround a central courtyard containing plastic chairs where guests can congregate. Its 81 rooms contain items such as iPod docking stations, shag pillows, and chalkboard doors. Additionally, the rooms also have blue wall panels with photo murals on the walls. Most of the hotel's rooms have platform beds. It is home to the Doug Fir Restaurant and Lounge, one of Portland's most popular music venues. The hotel also has a hair salon and a tattoo parlor.

Hotel

A hotel is an establishment that provides lodging paid on a short-term basis. Facilities provided may range from a basic bed and storage for clothing, to luxury features like en-suite bathrooms. Larger hotels may provide additional guest facilities such as a swimming pool, business centre, childcare, conference facilities and social function services. Hotel rooms are usually numbered (or named in some smaller hotels and B&Bs) to allow guests to identify their room. Some hotels offer meals as part of a room and board arrangement. In the United Kingdom, a hotel is required by law to serve food and drinks to all guests within certain stated hours. In Japan, capsule hotels provide a minimized amount of room space and shared facilities.

The precursor to the modern hotel was the inn of medieval Europe. For a period of about 200 years from the mid-17th century, coaching inns served as a place for lodging for coach travelers. Inns began to cater for richer clients in the mid-18th century. One of the first hotels in a modern sense was opened in Exeter in 1768. Hotels proliferated throughout Western Europe and North America in the 19th century, and luxury hotels began to spring up in the later part of the century.

Jupiter

Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun and the largest in the Solar System. It is a giant planet with a mass one-thousandth that of the Sun, but two and a half times that of all the other planets in the Solar System combined. Jupiter is a gas giant, along with Saturn. (Uranus and Neptune are ice giants.) Jupiter was known to astronomers of ancient times. The Romans named it after their god Jupiter. When viewed from Earth, Jupiter can reach an apparent magnitude of −2.94, bright enough for its reflected light to cast shadows, and making it on average the third-brightest object in the night sky after the Moon and Venus.

Jupiter is primarily composed of hydrogen with a quarter of its mass being helium, though helium comprises only about a tenth of the number of molecules. It may also have a rocky core of heavier elements, but like the other giant planets, Jupiter lacks a well-defined solid surface. Because of its rapid rotation, the planet's shape is that of an oblate spheroid (it has a slight but noticeable bulge around the equator). The outer atmosphere is visibly segregated into several bands at different latitudes, resulting in turbulence and storms along their interacting boundaries. A prominent result is the Great Red Spot, a giant storm that is known to have existed since at least the 17th century when it was first seen by telescope. Surrounding Jupiter is a faint planetary ring system and a powerful magnetosphere. Jupiter has at least 67 moons, including the four large Galilean moons discovered by Galileo Galilei in 1610. Ganymede, the largest of these, has a diameter greater than that of the planet Mercury.

Praia da Rocha

Praia da Rocha (English: "Rock Beach") is the beach and built up area on the Atlantic Ocean which is the southern section of the municipality/concelho of Portimão, Algarve, southern Portugal. It is also an urban area within the city of Portimão, south of the city centre.

The beach soccer tournament, Mundialito de Futebol de Praia, which hosts some of the world's best national teams, has taken place here every year since 2005.

Cap Aurora

Cap Aurora is a small Romanian summer-time seaside resort in the Mangalia municipality, Constanţa County. It is located between the neighbouring resorts of Jupiter and Venus, also within the municipality.
