Atacama Starry Nights: Episode I. Astronomer's Paradise is the first episode of a Atacama Starry Nights timelapse movie series. So cool: As mentioned by Dr. Brian May here (scroll down a bit): http://brianmay.com/whatsnew.html (Sat. Dec. 1st, 2012) On - National Geographic http://newswatch.nationalgeographic.com/2012/02/21/new-time-lapse-gives-rare-glimpse-at-atacamas-starry-nights/ - Nikon Rumours! http://nikonrumors.com/2012/02/27/guest-post-astronomers-paradise-time-lapse-video.aspx/ Cerro Paranal is an astronomers paradise with its stunningly dark, steady and transparent sky. Located in the barren Atacama Desert of Chile it is home to some of the world's leading telescopes. In August 2015 I was lucky enough to have a work related visit to the Paranal Observatory in Chile. Since the purpose of this trip was not photography I have put together just some clips I was able to take beside my work. This video depicts a whole night of work at ESO's Paranal Observatory, from dusk till dawn. As the starry sky begins disclosing its beauties, the domes of the four VLT Unit Telescopes rapidly move to observe different celestial objects. Above the observatory, the wonderful landscape of the Milky Way rides the firmament in all its glory, while several shooting stars 'scratch' the sky, leaving very distinctive trails. The Very Large Telescope array (VLT) is the flagship facility for European ground-based astronomy at the beginning of the third Millennium. It is the world's most advanced optical instrument, consisting of four Unit Telescopes with main mirrors of 8.2m diameter and four movable 1.8m diameter Auxiliary Telescopes. The telescopes can work together, to form a giant 'interferom...

All footage is available for licensing.
INFO: On 14 March 2013 His Royal Highness The Crown Prince of Denmark, accompanied by his wife, Her Royal Highness The Crown Princess, visited ESO’s Paranal Observatory, as part of an official visit to Chile. They were taken on a tour of ESO’s world-leading astronomical facilities on Paranal by ESO’s Director General, Tim de Zeeuw. The Crown Prince Couple of Denmark visited ESO’s Paranal Observatory during their official visit to Chile. The Observatory is located 130 kilometres south of Antofagasta, in the heart of Chile’s Atacama Desert, the driest desert in the world. At a height of 2635 metres above sea level, Paranal is the site of the Very Large Telescope (VLT), the world’s most advanced optical instrument dedicated to astronomical research. On arrival, The Crown Prince Frederik and...

This ESOcast takes a close look at an unusual new group of small telescopes that has recently achieved first light at ESO’s Paranal Observatory in northern Chile. The Next-Generation Transit Survey (NGTS) will search for transiting exoplanets — planets that pass in front of their parent star and hence produce a slight dimming of the star’s light that can be detected by sensitive instruments. The telescopes will focus on discovering Neptune-sized and smaller planets, with diameters between two and eight times that of Earth. NGTS is designed to operate in a robotic mode and it will continuously monitor the brightness of hundreds of thousands of comparatively bright stars in the southern skies. The NGTS discoveries, and follow-up observations by telescopes on the ground and in space, will be ...

A brief introduction to the European Southern Observatories (ESO) at Paranal: the Very Large Telescope (VLT) and La Residencia, as blown up in the James Bond film "Quantum of Solace". #MeetESO Jane MacArthur is a PhD student in the Space Research Centre, University of Leicester and thanks ESO for the wonderful tours of their facilities and Ian O'Neill for the video.
More space news and info at: http://www.coconutsciencelab.com - on April 26, 2016 an event at ESO’s Paranal Observatory in Chile marked the brilliant first light for the four powerful lasers that form a crucial part of the adaptive optics systems on ESO’s Very Large Telescope. Attendees were treated to a spectacular display of cutting-edge laser technology against the majestic skies of Paranal. These are the most powerful laser guide stars ever used for astronomy and mark the first use of multiple laser guide stars at ESO. This spectacular video sequence shows the four beams emerging from the new laser system on Unit Telescope 4 of the VLT. Please rate and comment, thanks! Credit: ESO, F. Kamphues, S. Lowery, G. Driving from Antofagasta to the Paranal Observatory, the scenery was like nothing I've seen before. Mars-like: baren lifeless boulder-strewn plains. I decided to set up the GoPro on the dash of the truck and just let it run.
Great Observatory Stone Documentary - World Documentary HD An observatory is a location used for observing terrestrial or celestial events. Astronomy, climatology/meteorology, geology, oceanography and volcanology are examples of disciplines for which observatories have been constructed. Historically, observatories were as simple as containing an astronomical sextant (for measuring the distance between stars) or Stonehenge (which has some alignments on astronomical phenomena). Ground-based observatories, located on the surface of Earth, are used to make observations in the radio and visible light portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Most optical telescopes are housed within a dome or similar structure, to protect the delicate instruments from the elements. Telescope domes have a sli...

The Super Telescope | Hunting The Edge Of The Universe - History Videos HD The Very Large Telescope (VLT) is a telescope operated by the European Southern Observatory on Cerro Paranal in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile. The VLT consists of four individual telescopes, each with a primary mirror 8.2 m across, which are generally used separately but can be used together to achieve very high angular resolution. The four separate optical telescopes are known as Antu, Kueyen, Melipal and Yepun, which are all words for astronomical objects in the Mapuche language. The telescopes form an array which is complemented by four movable Auxiliary Telescopes (ATs) of 1.8 m aperture. The VLT operates at visible and infrared wavelengths. Each individual telescope can detect objects roughly four bill...
