New Zealand
New Zealand (/njuːˈziːlənd/ new-ZEE-lənd, Māori: Aotearoa [aɔˈtɛaɾɔa]) is an island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The country geographically comprises two main landmasses – that of the North Island, or Te Ika-a-Māui, and the South Island, or Te Waipounamu – and numerous smaller islands. New Zealand is situated some 1,500 kilometres (900 mi) east of Australia across the Tasman Sea and roughly 1,000 kilometres (600 mi) south of the Pacific island areas of New Caledonia, Fiji, and Tonga. Because of its remoteness, it was one of the last lands to be settled by humans. During its long isolation, New Zealand developed a distinctive biodiversity of animal, fungal and plant life. The country's varied topography and its sharp mountain peaks, such as the Southern Alps, owe much to the tectonic uplift of land and volcanic eruptions. New Zealand's capital city is Wellington, while its most populous city is Auckland.
Somewhere between 1250 and 1300 CE, Polynesians settled in the islands that were to become New Zealand, and developed a distinctive Māori culture. In 1642, Abel Tasman, a Dutch explorer, became the first European to sight New Zealand. In 1840, representatives of the British Crown and Māori Chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi, making New Zealand a British colony. Today, the majority of New Zealand's population of 4.5 million is of European descent; the indigenous Māori are the largest minority, followed by Asians and Pacific Islanders. Reflecting this, New Zealand's culture is mainly derived from Māori and early British settlers, with recent broadening arising from increased immigration. The official languages are English, Māori and New Zealand Sign Language, with English predominant.

Matamata
Matamata /ˈmætəˌmætə/ is a rural Waikato town in New Zealand with a population of around 7,500. It is located near the base of the Kaimai Ranges, and is a thriving farming area known for Thoroughbred horse breeding and training pursuits. It is part of the Matamata-Piako District, which takes in the surrounding rural areas as well as Morrinsville and Te Aroha. State Highway 27 and the Kinleith Branch railway run through the town.
A nearby farm was the location for the Hobbiton Movie Set in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings. The New Zealand government decided to leave the Hobbit holes built on location as tourist attractions, since they were designed to blend seamlessly into the environment. During the interim period filming The Return of the King and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey they had no furniture or props, but could be entered with vistas of the farm viewed from inside them. A "Welcome to Hobbiton" sign has been placed on the main road. In 2011 parts of Hobbiton began to close in preparation for the three new movies based on the first Tolkien novel, The Hobbit.

Zealand
Zealand, also Sealand (Danish: Sjælland; pronounced [ˈɕɛˌlanˀ]), is the largest (7,031 km2) and most populated island in Denmark with a population just under 2.5 million, representing about 45% of the country's total population.
It is the 96th-largest island in the world by area and the 35th most populous. It is connected to Funen by the Great Belt Bridge, to Lolland, Falster (and Germany from 2021) by the Storstrøm Bridge and the Farø Bridges. Zealand is also linked to Amager by five bridges. Zealand is linked indirectly, through intervening islands by a series of bridges and tunnels, to southern Sweden.
Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, is located partly on the eastern shore of Zealand and partly on the island of Amager. Other cities on Zealand include Roskilde, Næstved and Elsinore.
The island is not connected historically to the Pacific nation of New Zealand, which is named after the Dutch province of Zeeland.
Mythological origins
In Norse mythology as told in the story of Gylfaginning, the island was created by the goddess Gefjun after she tricked Gylfi, the king of Sweden. She removed a piece of land and transported it to Denmark, which became Zealand. The vacant area was filled with water and became Mälaren. However, since modern maps show a similarity between Zealand and the Swedish lake Vänern, it is sometimes identified as the hole left by Gefjun.

Our guide was great and fun and presented the tour in a relaxed fashion and offers a load of interesting facts about Hobbiton. A little visual taste of what you can expect doing a tour of Hobbiton, Matamata, New Zaealand. Of course, footage and photos don't usually do justice to the real experience (especially in this case). Our guide was great and fun and presented the tour in a relaxed fashion and offers a load of interesting facts about Hobbiton. The entire tour we took was 2 hours, including a stop at the Green Dragon Inn for drinks and snacks - there are other options available. The tour of Hobbiton is breathtaking and highly recommended. A little visual taste of what you can expect doing a tour of Hobbiton, Matamata, New Zaealand. Of course, footage and photos don't usually do justice to the real experience (especially in this case). Our guide was great and fun and presented the tour in a relaxed fashion and offers a load of interesting facts about Hobbiton. The entire tour we took was 2 hours, including a stop at the Green Dragon Inn for drinks and snacks - there are other options available. The tour of Hobbiton is breathtaking and highly recommended. This tour cost $70 NZD pp.

Auckland is called the City of Sails, boasting more boats per capita than anywhere else in the world. Nestled between two natural harbors, it’s no wonder residents and visitors alike enjoy spending time on the water. After a breakfast in Elliott Stables, take off on a boat cruise from downtown to explore the sights of Hauraki Gulf.
With your feet back on solid ground, enjoy Auckland sightseeing and shopping along Queen Street. Jet over to Ponsonby, which is considered one of the more hip neighborhoods in Auckland. When lunchtime rolls around, find your way to Devonport, a lovely harborside suburb where you can enjoy a seafood lunch.
With a contented stomach, spend some time at Auckland Domain, the city’s oldest park. Watch a game of cricket, walk through the Formal Gardens, or take a leisurely stroll through the mature trees. If you’re interested in even more of New Zealand’s natural landscape, head just outside the city for rolling hills, jagged cliffs, and forests with towering treetops. Walk through the Hauna Ranges and you’ll be rewarded with the Hunua Falls, an impressive waterfall rushing over a volcanic edge.
Visitors interested in adventurous Auckland tours must head to the downtown Sky Tower before leaving New Zealand. This is the tallest man-made building in the entire country – and it offers a breathtaking base jump from the top. If you’re not in the mood for that much adrenaline, head to the observation platform to take in sweeping views of the city and harbor.

Retracing centuries of history can be thirsty work, so combine a little learning with leisure, at Speight’s Brewery, which has been serving up the Pride of the South since 1876. Then stretch your legs on St Clair Beach, a popular summertime hangout for generations of Dunedinites.
Rent a car and head into the peninsula’s hills to Larnach Castle. Further up the peninsula is the Ōtākou Marae, the hub of Ngāi Tahu cultural life. The peninsula comes to an end at Taiaroa Head, home to the world’s only mainland albatross breeding colony.
In Dunedin’s North, visit rare Yellow Eyed Penguins at Shag Point. Then just up the road at Hampden, marvel at the mysterious Moeraki Boulders. At the historic port town of Omaru, Victorian warehouses have become places where imaginations run free, earning the town the title of The Steampunk Capital of the World.
If it’s total isolation you’re yearning for, turn southward to the sparsely-populated Catlins Coast, and for even more adventures, head west into the rugged interior of Central Otago.

New Zealand is a backpackers paradise with it’s two main islands packed with adventure, adrenaline sports and stunning sceneries. But with such beauty can come a hefty price tag! For the budget conscious backpacker, New Zealand can seem like a challenging place to make every single dollar stretch, but with the introduction of working holiday visas, more and more travellers are moving their way through the country and saving money as they go!

I could easily live there, though we’ve decided not to (long story) but just go back every once in a while. After spending more than three months on the road there, I think we can give you quite a good idea of what to travel in New Zealand is like. Here are our 10 tips for your first time in New Zealand. Just some things to consider when considering or planning a trip down there.

1. The Southern Island is the pretty place to be
For nature that is. Most of us come to New Zealand because of the amazing landscapes and I will never forget what was written in the guestbook of the hostel I stayed in Auckland after arrival. It said ‘please go to the South Island as soon as you can!’. Of course, we had unfortunately booked a return trip from AKL meaning we had to return up north and leave the South Island behind at some point, which made me ache to go back. The second time we went to New Zealand, we flew out of Christchurch, so your trip definitely ends with a bang!
2. You better bring your hiking boots
During our first New Zealand trip we didn’t hike much, the main reason for us to come back to New Zealand a second time was to go hiking. In those six weeks we hiked five of their insanely popular Great Walks and did various amazing day hikes. If you are not into hiking or any outdoor activities, then New Zealand may not be the place for you.
3. They have sandflies
Argh, those friggin’ sandflies. They nearly killed me when we were out hiking and took some of the fun away when staying at the most scenic camping places, unable to leave your tent because otherwise you’d be stung like crazy. They are most common on the South Island and then usually up in the mountains or at mountain lakes. We never really used any bug dope as we found that it didn’t work anyway. Better be prepared!
4. Bring money
If you want to travel in New Zealand, realize it’s super expensive! Although we were camping and cooking most meals ourselves, we still got a scare each time we were at the checkout of a supermarket. But it’s not just that, accommodation tends to be rather expensive (and sometimes very poor) as well as fuel and basically anything you can think of. Except kiwi’s… kiwi’s are generally very cheap. And healthy. During our last journey, our motto was ‘one kiwi a day keeps the doctor away!’ For a really good budget breakdown, visit this post by fellow blogger Lotte who tells you how to travel in NZ as a couple for less than NZD 160/day.
5. See Lord of the Rings
I’m not a fan of fantasy movies but I felt that I really needed to see the Lord of the Rings movies before going to travel in New Zealand. You will find references to LOTR all over when you travel in New Zealand, for example in Mata Mata where Hobbiton is and all the way over the South Island. After seeing the movies, I still am not a fan of fantasy yet each time I see them, I am being swept back to those most amazing trips I have made and they keep the memories alive.
6. Rent a vehicle
If you want to see the unknown, then better rent a vehicle. Many travel around with a campervan, we just rented a simple car and brought our tent from home, as well as all of our camping gear. This way we were free to go and drive anywhere we wanted, rather than being stuck on a bus with a ton of other travellers. Believe us, when there is this very scenic spot (and there WILL be very scenic spots) you just want to stop and enjoy that moment, rather than having to move on because your bus driver says so…

In 1998 a film location scout knocked on the door of the Alexander family home and said he thought their farm, surrounded by Matamata's rolling hills and with the Kaimai Ranges in the distance, might make an ideal spot to film some of the scenes in the Lord of the Rings feature films since it so resembled the Shire, the region of Middle Earth settled by hobbits in John Ronald Reuel Tolkien's richly imagined fictional world....
