James Borrell is a conservation biologist with a passion for challenging research expeditions. He founded the social enterprise Discover Conservation and is a member of the Inspired50. James’ research has taken him from the Peruvian Amazon to the High Arctic studying everything from critically endangered big cats, to tiny dragonflies and even dwarf trees. Even having visited remote parts of the tropics, James describes the hardest working environment as a bleak hillside in the Scottish Highlands with ‘typical’ Scottish weather. James’ particular interest is the genetics of endangered species and exploring how we can engage young people with conservation through citizen science and fieldwork. Despite all the bad news we are bombarded with daily about the state of our natural world, J...

Section 1 discusses timber as a living material, Section 2 deals with decay organisms and their habitat requirements. Section 3 moves on to the building as an environment for timber and discusses the ways in which wood responds to moisture change. Section 4 ends with an approach to timber decay which integrates knowledge on the decay organism, its requirements and natural predators with appropriate and targeted chemical treatments.

Oct. 4, 2016—The Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute welcomed an Eld’s deer fawn Oct. 2 around 4:30 p.m. Both the fawn and her mom Sienna appear to be doing well and the fawn is nursing. This is Sienna’s second fawn and the first for the fawn’s dad, Duffy. Keepers will weigh her several times a week to ensure that she is growing normally. In about a month, she’ll start nibbling on solid foods, but she won’t start eating many solid foods until she’s about two months old. Around the same time, she’ll join a nursery herd of Eld’s deer made up of mothers and their fawns. At six months old, she’ll be introduced to main Eld’s deer herd. Since 1980 145 Eld’s deer fawns have been born at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute.

In March 1933, within weeks of his inauguration, President Franklin Roosevelt sent legislation to Congress aimed at profiting relief for the one out of every four American workers who were unemployed. He proposed a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) to provide jobs in natural resource conservation. Over the next decade, the CCC put more than three million young men to work in the nation's forests, parks, and farms: planting trees, creating flood barriers, fighting fires, and building roads and trails. Corps workers lived in camps under quasi-military discipline and received a wage of $30 per month, $25 of which they were required to send home to their families. This film, by director Robert Stone, interweaves rich archival imagery with the personal accounts of CCC veterans to tell the story...
This film shows how ecotourism can help give more value to Sharks and Mantas alive rather than being fished and killed and how local communities can benefit from the protection of marine life. It also shows what some nonprofit organizations are doing to help protect sharks in our oceans around the world as well as confronting the myth that sharks are man eating monsters from the deep wanting to kill humans.
