Manipur (English pronunciation: i/ˌmənɪpʊr/) is a state in northeastern India, with the city of Imphal as its capital. Manipur is sometimes called alternative names such as Kangleipak or Sanaleibak. It is bounded by Nagaland to the north, Mizoram to the south, and Assam to the west; Burma lies to its east. The state covers an area of 22,327 square kilometres (8,621 sq mi). Its people include the Meetei, Kuki, Naga, and Pangal peoples, who speak Sino-Tibetan languages.
Manipur has been at the crossroads of Asian economic and cultural exchange for more than 2,500 years. It has long connected the Indian subcontinent to Southeast Asia, enabling migration of people, cultures and religions. It has also witnessed many wars, including fighting during World War II.
During the British Raj, the Kingdom of Manipur was one of the princely states. Between 1917 and 1939, the people of Manipur pressed for their rights against the British Rule. By the late 1930s, the princely state of Manipur negotiated with the British administration its preference to be part of India, rather than Burma. These negotiations were cut short with the outbreak of World War II. On 21 September 1949, Maharaja Budhachandra signed a Treaty of Accession merging the kingdom into India. This merger is disputed by groups in Manipur as having been completed without consensus and under duress.

There is an uneasy calm over insurgency-hit Manipur, which has completed a year - 2014 - with the lowest number of killings in clashes between security forces and militant groups. But the peace may be deceptive; it comes after a Supreme Court committee indicted armed forces for a series of fake encounters, leading the forces to disengage. But an informal ceasefire has not led to any movement towards justice for the victims of fake encounters. In fact, our investigation finds continuing attempts to bury the truth and obstruct justice at every level, often using the Armed Forces Special Powers Act. As long as there is no justice, peace in Manipur may be an illusion. Watch full video: http://www.ndtv.com/video/player/truth-vs-hype/truth-vs-hype-manipur-no-peace-without-justice/351793?yt
Since August 31 last year, nine bodies of young men have been awaiting burial in the Churachandpur town of Manipur. They were allegedly killed in police action while protesting three controversial bills passed by the state assembly earlier in the day. For a state that saw a rare form of protest that used the body as its tool - when 12 women disrobed in front of Kangla Fort in 2004 to resist alleged excesses by security forces, this is yet another instance of human body being used as an instrument of protest. A team of reporters from The Wire visited the state on August 31 this year to bring to you a comprehensive view of what has been unfolding on the ground during the last one year. The Wire has also reported on the issue earlier this month. For more details, read http://thewire.in/64758...

IMPHAL TOURISM / MANIPUR, INDIA. Edit- Ragadeep Kancharala Voice- Akanksha Singh It is generally believed that battle scars render a handsome face obnoxious; however one look at Imphal, the capital city of Manipur, would force a change of opinion. This charming city has acted as the backdrop for the famous and bloody battle of Imphal (along with Battle of Kohima) which turned the course of World War II when the Japanese lost the battle in Asia for the first time. Prior to this claim to fame, Imphal was the seat of the Emperor of Manipur and has been the capital of Manipur State since 1826. This quaint little beautiful city, finds its abode in the basin of Manipur River. The city is encircled by hills that protect it from almost every direction. However, being the center of attraction an...
India is a beautiful and bamboozling place, an endlessly fascinating country that is often challenging and always surprising. Stretched between the golden beaches of the Indian Ocean and the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayan mountains lies an incredible tapestry of natural and man-made wonders – astounding temples, mystical monasteries, frenetic cities, pristine national parks, lavish palaces, lost kingdoms, mesmerising markets and some of the world’s most iconic monuments. Visiting India is an assault on the senses. Sights, sounds, smells and sensations are all experienced at maximum intensity. On day one, it can feel intimidating, but by the end of the first week, the noise and chaos will seem like an ordinary part of life. The sensory stimulation becomes strangely addictive. India i...
Asking Ed Armstrong who has been travelling to Manipur from USA, he shared that "simple things like internet could be improved in Manipur". And I echo what he expressed, as I am also challenged to plan any internet video meeting for Guest Speakers in Manipur. Who can help in making this improvement in Manipur ? Full interview of Ed Armstrong talking about Manipur and Polo, coming up at http://FindingTheVoices.com

Manipur would really have been the Jewell in the crown of tourist map of India…but the terror of underground groups marred its opportunities. Such a beautiful state but almost no tourist infrastructure. Moreover the camps of Assam rifles and board of anti-extortion helpline welcomes you in the hills of this state. There are so many attractions in Manipur which makes this tiny hilly state culturally distinguished and socially interesting. Senior editor of NEWS NATION RANJIT KUMAR visited some places over there to bring the true essence of the Manipuri culture.

If I was a friend of mine
I would surely be concerned
I'd recommend I take some time
Away from me
I think I need a holiday from myself
I need some time away from being me
I'm worried about my health
And I seem to be bad company
I need time
To be careless with my mouth
Not worry what I think about
'Cos it's all fine
I need the dawn
I never get to bed before
I don't sleep naked anymore
And I can't lie in
Imagine I could take a package deal
A SAGA tour of ancient Rhodes
A weekend break in Galashiels
Or circumnavigate the globe
I think I need
Two weeks in a caravan
To get away from who I am
And where I've been
So book me up
An all expenses pleasure cruise
Away from thinking about you
All the time
It's a bad sign
I need to kick back in the sun
I need to masquerade as someone else
I need to get myself some fun
