United States Air Force Academy - Basic Cadet Training Class of 2019
The incoming Class of 2019 arrives at the United States Air Force Academy to begin basic training. They proceed to Jacks Valley for half their time in basic training. Physical endurance and mental toughness are tested while out in field conditions. They return to be accepted into the cadet wing and begin the academic year. Upon graduation from the Academy, a cadet will graduate with a bachelor of science degree and be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force.

The united states air force puts on another great air show in a recent military exercise. The United States Air Force (USAF) is the aerial warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces and one of the seven American uniformed services. Initially part of the United States Army, the USAF was formed as a separate branch of the military on 18 September 1947 under the National Security Act of 1947.[5] It is the most recent branch of the U.S. military to be formed, and is the largest and one of the world's most technologically advanced air forces. The USAF articulates its core functions as Nuclear Deterrence Operations, Special Operations, Air Superiority, Global Integrated ISR, Space Superiority, Command and Control, Cyberspace Superiority, Personnel Recovery, Global Precision Attack, Building Partnerships, Rapid Global Mobility and Agile Combat Support.[6]
The U.S. Air Force is a military service within the Department of the Air Force, one of the three military departments of the Department of Defense. The USAF is headed by the civilian Secretary of the Air Force, who is appointed by the President with the advice and consent of the Senate. The highest-ranking military officer in the Department of the Air Force is the Chief of Staff of the Air Force who exercises supervision over Air Force units, and serves as a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Air Force combat forces and mobility forces are assigned, as directed by the Secretary of Defense, to the Combatant Commanders, and neither the Secretary of the Air Force nor the Chief of Staff have operational command authority over them.
The U.S. Air Force provides air support for surface forces[7] and aids in the recovery of troops in the field. As of 2012, the service operates more than 5,638 aircraft, 450 ICBMs and 63 satellites. It has a $140 billion budget with 332,854 active duty personnel, 185,522 civilian personnel, 71,400 Air Force Reserve personnel, and 106,700 Air National Guard personnel.[2]

According to the National Security Act of 1947 (61 Stat. 502), which created the USAF:
In general the United States Air Force shall include aviation forces both combat and service not otherwise assigned. It shall be organized, trained, and equipped primarily for prompt and sustained offensive and defensive air operations. The Air Force shall be responsible for the preparation of the air forces necessary for the effective prosecution of war except as otherwise assigned and, in accordance with integrated joint mobilization plans, for the expansion of the peacetime components of the Air Force to meet the needs of war.
§8062 of Title 10 US Code defines the purpose of the USAF as:[8]
to preserve the peace and security, and provide for the defense, of the United States, the Territories, Commonwealths, and possessions, and any areas occupied by the United States;
to support national policy;
to implement national objectives;
to overcome any nations responsible for aggressive acts that imperil the peace and security of the United States.
The stated mission of the USAF today is to "fly, fight, and win in air, space, and cyberspace".[9]
Vision[edit]
"The United States Air Force will be a trusted and reliable joint partner with our sister services known for integrity in all of our activities, including supporting the joint mission first and foremost. We will provide compelling air, space, and cyber capabilities for use by the combatant commanders. We will excel as stewards of all Air Force resources in service to the American people, while providing precise and reliable Global Vigilance, Reach and Power for the nation".[9]
Core functions[edit]
Recently, the Air Force refined its understanding of the core duties and responsibilities it performs as a Military Service Branch, streamlining what previously were six distinctive capabilities and seventeen operational functions into twelve core functions to be used across the doctrine, organization, training, equipment, leadership, and education, personnel, and facilities spectrum. These core functions express the ways in which the Air Force is particularly and appropriately suited to contribute to national security, but they do not necessarily express every aspect of what the Air Force contributes to the nation. It should be emphasized that the core functions, by themselves, are not doctrinal constructs.[10]
Air Superiority
Air Superiority is "that degree of dominance in the air battle of one force over another which permits the conduct of operations by the former and its related land, sea, air, and special operations forces at a given time and place without prohibitive interference by the opposing force" (JP 1-02).[10]

United States Air Force Basic Military Training (also known as BMT or boot camp) is an eight-and-a-half-week rigorous program of physical and mental training required in order for an individual to become an Airman in the United States Air Force, United States Air Force Reserve, or Air National Guard. Lackland Air Force Base conducts the Air Force's only enlisted recruit training program, ensuring orderly transition from civilian to military life. Recruits are trained in the fundamental skills necessary to be successful in an Expeditionary Air Force. This includes basic war skills, military discipline, physical fitness, drill and ceremonies, Air Force core values and a comprehensive range of subjects relating to Air Force life.
More than 7 million young men and women have entered Air Force basic military training since 4 Feb 1946, when the training mission was moved to Lackland from Harlingen Air Force Base in Harlingen, Texas. Throughout its history, Lackland's BMT program has changed in many ways to meet the operational needs of the Air Force. Yet, recent updates in the curriculum are some of the most significant in its more than 60-year history, with every aspect of the program overhauled.
On 7 Nov 2005, BMT changed its curriculum to focus on a new kind of Airman—one who is a 'warrior first.' The goal is to instill a warrior mindset in trainees from day one and better prepare Airmen for the realities of the Expeditionary Air Force.
The changes resulted from the need to meet current and future operational Air Force requirements. In September 2004, the 20th Basic Military Training Review Committee met at Lackland and recommended significant changes in the focus, curriculum and schedule.
In 2011 it was revealed that a number of military training instructors engaged in inappropriate and illegal sexual relationships and advances against dozens of female trainees. The scandal led seventy-seven Congressional representatives to call for a hearing to investigate the incident.
Military Training Instructors or MTIs are the instructors that are responsible for most of the training that takes place in BMT. They accompany trainees throughout the training process, instructing and correcting them in everything from correct procedures for firing a weapon to the correct way to speak to a superior. They are known for their campaign covers typically called "Smokey the Bear" or "Smokey" hats. Unlike the Marine Corps Drill Instructors and Army Drill Sergeants, Training Instructor hats are a dark blue, instead of the well known brown.

Aerostats use buoyancy to float in the air in much the same way that ships float on the water. They are characterized by one or more large gasbags or canopies, filled with a relatively low-density gas such as helium, hydrogen, or hot air, which is less dense than the surrounding air. When the weight of this is added to the weight of the aircraft structure, it adds up to the same weight as the air that the craft displaces.
Small hot-air balloons called sky lanterns date back to the 3rd century BC, and were only the second type of aircraft to fly, the first being kites.
A balloon was originally any aerostat, while the term airship was used for large, powered aircraft designs – usually fixed-wing.[2][3][4][5][6][7] In 1919 Frederick Handley Page was reported as referring to "ships of the air," with smaller passenger types as "Air yachts."[8] In the 1930s, large intercontinental flying boats were also sometimes referred to as "ships of the air" or "flying-ships".[9][10] – though none had yet been built. The advent of powered balloons, called dirigible balloons, and later of rigid hulls allowing a great increase in size, began to change the way these words were used. Huge powered aerostats, characterized by a rigid outer framework and separate aerodynamic skin surrounding the gas bags, were produced, the Zeppelins being the largest and most famous. There were still no fixed-wing aircraft or non-rigid balloons large enough to be called airships, so "airship" came to be synonymous with these aircraft. Then several accidents, such as the Hindenburg disaster in 1937, led to the demise of these airships. Nowadays a "balloon" is an unpowered aerostat and an "airship" is a powered one.
A powered, steerable aerostat is called a dirigible. Sometimes this term is applied only to non-rigid balloons, and sometimes dirigible balloon is regarded as the definition of an airship (which may then be rigid or non-rigid). Non-rigid dirigibles are characterized by a moderately aerodynamic gasbag with stabilizing fins at the back. These soon became known as blimps. During the Second World War, this shape was widely adopted for tethered balloons; in windy weather, this both reduces the strain on the tether and stabilizes the balloon. The nickname blimp was adopted along with the shape. In modern times, any small dirigible or airship is called a blimp, though a blimp may be unpowered as well as powered.

A great video of US Air Force aircraft flying near North Korea. ROYAL AIR FORCE FAIRFORD, England -- For more than 50 years the B-52H Stratofortress has served as the backbone of the United States' strategic bomber force. The B-52 is capable of dropping or launching the widest array of weapons in the U.S. inventory, including gravity bombs, cluster bombs, precision guided missiles and joint direct attack munitions to complete its conventional mission.
Many might associate the B-52 with its nuclear role, but today the aircraft and its crews are forward deployed to Royal Air Force Fairford, England, to demonstrate the conventional capabilities the airframe offers.
"Associating the B-52 mission with a conventional mission and dropping conventional bombs is important, because it's a capability that we have and are proficient in and train to all the time," said Capt. Jeffery Shaw, 5th Bomb Wing weapons officer.
While at RAF Fairford, the 23rd Expeditionary Bomb Squadron used three B-52Hs to drop inert munitions into a target zone in Latvia and off the coast of Sweden, participate in simulated air strikes, provide naval support to vessels from 15 countries, and coordinate with Latvian, Polish and Lithuanian Joint Terminal Attack Controllers.
In a conventional conflict, the B-52 can perform strategic attack, air interdiction, offensive counter-air, close air support and maritime operations.
"This is a pretty phenomenal opportunity because we're integrating the B-52 on an international scale with NATO and Baltic nations," Shaw said. "We have multiple fighter aircraft across this whole area that we're doing close air support work with--Latvian, Lithuanian and Polish JTACs...it's definitely a chance for the B-52 to showcase its capability."
While participating in various training scenarios during BALTOPS 15 and Saber Strike 15, air and ground crew members demonstrate the sustained capabilities of the B-52 and its ability to provide a credible, flexible and sustained bomber presence anywhere and anytime.
Shaw noted it's important the B-52s are participating in conventional missions in the Baltics, while operating out of a forward deployed location, projecting an expeditionary airpower. This means crew members are able to reinforce their ability to operate from a forward deployed location and employ the B-52 in a realistic close air support scenario.
Bomber operations provide a visible signal that highlights the United States' ability to deter strategic attacks, and the flexibility and range of the aircraft were seen during Operation Desert Storm, the Gulf War, Operation Allied Force and Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.
As seen in previous operations, the B-52 provides the ability to respond to any potential crisis, future crisis or challenge and their operations shall continue well into 2040.
The aircraft and support personnel deployed from Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota, along with men and women from Whiteman AFB, Missouri; F. E. Warren AFB, Wyoming; Langley AFB, Virginia; Malmstrom AFB, Montana; Navy Munitions Command Unit Charleston, and Barksdale AFB, Louisiana, to support a planned B-2 and B-52 bomber deployment to England.

Air force
An air force, also known in some countries as an air army, is in the broadest sense, the national military organization that primarily conducts aerial warfare. More specifically, it is the branch of a nation's armed services that is responsible for aerial warfare as distinct from an army, navy, or a marine corps. Typically, air forces are responsible for gaining control of the air, carrying out strategic and tactical bombing missions, and providing support to land and naval forces.
The term "air force" may also refer to a tactical air force or numbered air force, which is an operational formation either within a national air force or comprising several air components from allied nations. Air forces typically consist of a combination of fighters, bombers, helicopters, transport planes and other aircraft.
Many air forces are also responsible for operations of the military space, intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM), and communications equipment. Some air forces may command and control other air defence assets such as anti-aircraft artillery, surface-to-air missiles, or anti-ballistic missile warning networks and defensive systems. Some nations, principally Russia, the former Soviet Union and countries who modelled their militaries along Soviet lines, have an air defence force which is organizationally separate from their air force.

The Air Force shall be responsible for the preparation of the air forces necessary for the effective prosecution of war except as otherwise assigned and, in accordance with integrated joint mobilization plans, for the expansion of the peacetime components of the Air Force to meet the needs of war. §8062 of Title 10 US Code defines the purpose of the USAF as:[8] to preserve the peace and security, and provide for the defense, of the United States, the Territories, Commonwealths, and possessions, and any areas occupied by the United States; to support national policy; to implement national objectives; to overcome any nations responsible for aggressive acts that imperil the peace and security of the United States. These core functions express the ways in which the Air Force is particularly and appropriately suited to contribute to national security, but they do not necessarily express every aspect of what the Air Force contributes to the nation. United States Air Force Basic Military Training (also known as BMT or boot camp) is an eight-and-a-half-week rigorous program of physical and mental training required in order for an individual to become an Airman in the United States Air Force, United States Air Force Reserve, or Air National Guard. It is carried out at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Lackland Air Force Base conducts the Air Force's only enlisted recruit training program, ensuring orderly transition from civilian to military life. Recruits are trained in the fundamental skills necessary to be successful in an Expeditionary Air Force. This includes basic war skills, military discipline, physical fitness, drill and ceremonies, Air Force core values and a comprehensive range of subjects relating to Air Force life. More than 7 million young men and women have entered Air Force basic military training since 4 Feb 1946, when the training mission was moved to Lackland from Harlingen Air Force Base in Harlingen, Texas. Throughout its history, Lackland's BMT program has changed in many ways to meet the operational needs of the Air Force. Yet, recent updates in the curriculum are some of the most significant in its more than 60-year history, with every aspect of the program overhauled. On 7 Nov 2005, BMT changed its curriculum to focus on a new kind of Airman—one who is a 'warrior first.' The goal is to instill a warrior mindset in trainees from day one and better prepare Airmen for the realities of the Expeditionary Air Force. The changes resulted from the need to meet current and future operational Air Force requirements. In September 2004, the 20th Basic Military Training Review Committee met at Lackland and recommended significant changes in the focus, curriculum and schedule. In 2011 it was revealed that a number of military training instructors engaged in inappropriate and illegal sexual relationships and advances against dozens of female trainees. The scandal led seventy-seven Congressional representatives to call for a hearing to investigate the incident. Military Training Instructors or MTIs are the instructors that are responsible for most of the training that takes place in BMT. They accompany trainees throughout the training process, instructing and correcting them in everything from correct procedures for firing a weapon to the correct way to speak to a superior. They are known for their campaign covers typically called "Smokey the Bear" or "Smokey" hats. Unlike the Marine Corps Drill Instructors and Army Drill Sergeants, Training Instructor hats are a dark blue, instead of the well known brown. -

Methods of lift[edit] Lighter than air – aerostats[edit] A hot air balloon in flight Main article: Aerostat Aerostats use buoyancy to float in the air in much the same way that ships float on the water. They are characterized by one or more large gasbags or canopies, filled with a relatively low-density gas such as helium, hydrogen, or hot air, which is less dense than the surrounding air. When the weight of this is added to the weight of the aircraft structure, it adds up to the same weight as the air that the craft displaces. Small hot-air balloons called sky lanterns date back to the 3rd century BC, and were only the second type of aircraft to fly, the first being kites. A balloon was originally any aerostat, while the term airship was used for large, powered aircraft designs – usually fixed-wing.[2][3][4][5][6][7] In 1919 Frederick Handley Page was reported as referring to "ships of the air," with smaller passenger types as "Air yachts."[8] In the 1930s, large intercontinental flying boats were also sometimes referred to as "ships of the air" or "flying-ships".[9][10] – though none had yet been built. The advent of powered balloons, called dirigible balloons, and later of rigid hulls allowing a great increase in size, began to change the way these words were used. Huge powered aerostats, characterized by a rigid outer framework and separate aerodynamic skin surrounding the gas bags, were produced, the Zeppelins being the largest and most famous. There were still no fixed-wing aircraft or non-rigid balloons large enough to be called airships, so "airship" came to be synonymous with these aircraft. Then several accidents, such as the Hindenburg disaster in 1937, led to the demise of these airships. Nowadays a "balloon" is an unpowered aerostat and an "airship" is a powered one. A powered, steerable aerostat is called a dirigible. Sometimes this term is applied only to non-rigid balloons, and sometimes dirigible balloon is regarded as the definition of an airship (which may then be rigid or non-rigid). Non-rigid dirigibles are characterized by a moderately aerodynamic gasbag with stabilizing fins at the back. These soon became known as blimps. During the Second World War, this shape was widely adopted for tethered balloons; in windy weather, this both reduces the strain on the tether and stabilizes the balloon. The nickname blimp was adopted along with the shape. In modern times, any small dirigible or airship is called a blimp, though a blimp may be unpowered as well as powered. -

ROYAL AIR FORCE FAIRFORD, England -- For more than 50 years the B-52H Stratofortress has served as the backbone of the United States' strategic bomber force. The B-52 is capable of dropping or launching the widest array of weapons in the U.S. inventory, including gravity bombs, cluster bombs, precision guided missiles and joint direct attack munitions to complete its conventional mission. Many might associate the B-52 with its nuclear role, but today the aircraft and its crews are forward deployed to Royal Air Force Fairford, England, to demonstrate the conventional capabilities the airframe offers. "Associating the B-52 mission with a conventional mission and dropping conventional bombs is important, because it's a capability that we have and are proficient in and train to all the time," said Capt. Jeffery Shaw, 5th Bomb Wing weapons officer. While at RAF Fairford, the 23rd Expeditionary Bomb Squadron used three B-52Hs to drop inert munitions into a target zone in Latvia and off the coast of Sweden, participate in simulated air strikes, provide naval support to vessels from 15 countries, and coordinate with Latvian, Polish and Lithuanian Joint Terminal Attack Controllers. In a conventional conflict, the B-52 can perform strategic attack, air interdiction, offensive counter-air, close air support and maritime operations. "This is a pretty phenomenal opportunity because we're integrating the B-52 on an international scale with NATO and Baltic nations," Shaw said. "We have multiple fighter aircraft across this whole area that we're doing close air support work with--Latvian, Lithuanian and Polish JTACs...it's definitely a chance for the B-52 to showcase its capability." While participating in various training scenarios during BALTOPS 15 and Saber Strike 15, air and ground crew members demonstrate the sustained capabilities of the B-52 and its ability to provide a credible, flexible and sustained bomber presence anywhere and anytime. Shaw noted it's important the B-52s are participating in conventional missions in the Baltics, while operating out of a forward deployed location, projecting an expeditionary airpower. This means crew members are able to reinforce their ability to operate from a forward deployed location and employ the B-52 in a realistic close air support scenario. Bomber operations provide a visible signal that highlights the United States' ability to deter strategic attacks, and the flexibility and range of the aircraft were seen during Operation Desert Storm, the Gulf War, Operation Allied Force and Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. As seen in previous operations, the B-52 provides the ability to respond to any potential crisis, future crisis or challenge and their operations shall continue well into 2040. The aircraft and support personnel deployed from Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota, along with men and women from Whiteman AFB, Missouri; F. E. Warren AFB, Wyoming; Langley AFB, Virginia; Malmstrom AFB, Montana; Navy Munitions Command Unit Charleston, and Barksdale AFB, Louisiana, to support a planned B-2 and B-52 bomber deployment to England. Recruits are trained in the fundamental skills necessary to be successful in an Expeditionary Air Force. This includes basic war skills, military discipline, physical fitness, drill and ceremonies, Air Force core values and a comprehensive range of subjects relating to Air Force life.
More than 7 million young men and women have entered Air Force basic military training since 4 Feb 1946, when the training mission was moved to Lackland from Harlingen Air Force Base in Harlingen, Texas. Throughout its history, Lackland's BMT program has changed in many ways to meet the operational needs of the Air Force. In 2011 it was revealed that a number of military training instructors engaged in inappropriate and illegal sexual relationships and advances against dozens of female trainees. The scandal led seventy-seven Congressional representatives to call for a hearing to investigate the incident.
Military Training Instructors or MTIs are the instructors that are responsible for most of the training that takes place in BMT. They accompany trainees throughout the training process, instructing and correcting them in everything from correct procedures for firing a weapon to the correct way to speak to a superior. They are known for their campaign covers typically called "Smokey the Bear" or "Smokey" hats. Unlike the Marine Corps Drill Instructors and Army Drill Sergeants, Training Instructor hats are a dark blue, instead of the well known brown.

The advent of powered balloons, called dirigible balloons, and later of rigid hulls allowing a great increase in size, began to change the way these words were used. A great video of US Air Force aircraft flying near North Korea. ROYAL AIR FORCE FAIRFORD, England -- For more than 50 years the B-52H Stratofortress has served as the backbone of the United States' strategic bomber force. The B-52 is capable of dropping or launching the widest array of weapons in the U.S. inventory, including gravity bombs, cluster bombs, precision guided missiles and joint direct attack munitions to complete its conventional mission.
Many might associate the B-52 with its nuclear role, but today the aircraft and its crews are forward deployed to Royal Air Force Fairford, England, to demonstrate the conventional capabilities the airframe offers.
"Associating the B-52 mission with a conventional mission and dropping conventional bombs is important, because it's a capability that we have and are proficient in and train to all the time," said Capt. Jeffery Shaw, 5th Bomb Wing weapons officer.
While at RAF Fairford, the 23rd Expeditionary Bomb Squadron used three B-52Hs to drop inert munitions into a target zone in Latvia and off the coast of Sweden, participate in simulated air strikes, provide naval support to vessels from 15 countries, and coordinate with Latvian, Polish and Lithuanian Joint Terminal Attack Controllers.
In a conventional conflict, the B-52 can perform strategic attack, air interdiction, offensive counter-air, close air support and maritime operations.
"This is a pretty phenomenal opportunity because we're integrating the B-52 on an international scale with NATO and Baltic nations," Shaw said. "We have multiple fighter aircraft across this whole area that we're doing close air support work with--Latvian, Lithuanian and Polish JTACs...it's definitely a chance for the B-52 to showcase its capability."
While participating in various training scenarios during BALTOPS 15 and Saber Strike 15, air and ground crew members demonstrate the sustained capabilities of the B-52 and its ability to provide a credible, flexible and sustained bomber presence anywhere and anytime.
Shaw noted it's important the B-52s are participating in conventional missions in the Baltics, while operating out of a forward deployed location, projecting an expeditionary airpower. This means crew members are able to reinforce their ability to operate from a forward deployed location and employ the B-52 in a realistic close air support scenario.
Bomber operations provide a visible signal that highlights the United States' ability to deter strategic attacks, and the flexibility and range of the aircraft were seen during Operation Desert Storm, the Gulf War, Operation Allied Force and Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.
As seen in previous operations, the B-52 provides the ability to respond to any potential crisis, future crisis or challenge and their operations shall continue well into 2040.
The aircraft and support personnel deployed from Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota, along with men and women from Whiteman AFB, Missouri; F. E. ROYAL AIR FORCE FAIRFORD, England -- For more than 50 years the B-52H Stratofortress has served as the backbone of the United States' strategic bomber force. The B-52 is capable of dropping or launching the widest array of weapons in the U.S. inventory, including gravity bombs, cluster bombs, precision guided missiles and joint direct attack munitions to complete its conventional mission.
Many might associate the B-52 with its nuclear role, but today the aircraft and its crews are forward deployed to Royal Air Force Fairford, England, to demonstrate the conventional capabilities the airframe offers.
"Associating the B-52 mission with a conventional mission and dropping conventional bombs is important, because it's a capability that we have and are proficient in and train to all the time," said Capt. Jeffery Shaw, 5th Bomb Wing weapons officer.
While at RAF Fairford, the 23rd Expeditionary Bomb Squadron used three B-52Hs to drop inert munitions into a target zone in Latvia and off the coast of Sweden, participate in simulated air strikes, provide naval support to vessels from 15 countries, and coordinate with Latvian, Polish and Lithuanian Joint Terminal Attack Controllers.
In a conventional conflict, the B-52 can perform strategic attack, air interdiction, offensive counter-air, close air support and maritime operations.
"This is a pretty phenomenal opportunity because we're integrating the B-52 on an international scale with NATO and Baltic nations," Shaw said. "We have multiple fighter aircraft across this whole area that we're doing close air support work with--Latvian, Lithuanian and Polish JTACs...it's definitely a chance for the B-52 to showcase its capability."
While participating in various training scenarios during BALTOPS 15 and Saber Strike 15, air and ground crew members demonstrate the sustained capabilities of the B-52 and its ability to provide a credible, flexible and sustained bomber presence anywhere and anytime.
Shaw noted it's important the B-52s are participating in conventional missions in the Baltics, while operating out of a forward deployed location, projecting an expeditionary airpower. This means crew members are able to reinforce their ability to operate from a forward deployed location and employ the B-52 in a realistic close air support scenario.
Bomber operations provide a visible signal that highlights the United States' ability to deter strategic attacks, and the flexibility and range of the aircraft were seen during Operation Desert Storm, the Gulf War, Operation Allied Force and Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.
As seen in previous operations, the B-52 provides the ability to respond to any potential crisis, future crisis or challenge and their operations shall continue well into 2040.
The aircraft and support personnel deployed from Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota, along with men and women from Whiteman AFB, Missouri; F. E. Warren AFB, Wyoming; Langley AFB, Virginia; Malmstrom AFB, Montana; Navy Munitions Command Unit Charleston, and Barksdale AFB, Louisiana, to support a planned B-2 and B-52 bomber deployment to England.

During the later period of its testing, the B-70 was proposed for a reconnaissance/strike role, with an RS-70 designation. When it was clear that the A-12 performance potential was much greater, the Air Force ordered a variant of the A-12 in December 1962.[14] Originally named R-12[N 1] by Lockheed, the Air Force version was longer and heavier than the A-12, with a longer fuselage to hold more fuel, two seats in the cockpit, and reshaped chines. Reconnaissance equipment included signals intelligence sensors, a side looking airborne radar and a photo camera.[14] The CIA's A-12 was a better photo reconnaissance platform than the Air Force's R-12, since the A-12 flew somewhat higher and faster,[11] and with only one pilot it had room to carry a superior camera[11] and more instruments.[15]
During the 1964 campaign, Republican presidential nominee Barry Goldwater repeatedly criticized President Lyndon B. Johnson and his administration for falling behind the Soviet Union in developing new weapons. Johnson decided to counter this criticism by revealing the existence of the Lockheed YF-12A Air Force interceptor, which also served as cover for the still-secret A-12,[16] and the Air Force reconnaissance model since July 1964. Air Force Chief of Staff General Curtis LeMay preferred the SR (Strategic Reconnaissance) designation and wanted the RS-71 to be named SR-71. Before the July speech, LeMay lobbied to modify Johnson's speech to read SR-71 instead of RS-71. The media transcript given to the press at the time still had the earlier RS-71 designation in places, creating the story that the president had misread the aircraft's designation.[17][N 2]
In 1968, Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara canceled the F-12 interceptor program; the specialized tooling used to manufacture both the YF-12 and the SR-71 was also ordered destroyed.[18] Production of the SR-71 totaled 32 aircraft with 29 SR-71As, 2 SR-71Bs, and the single SR-71C.[19]

US Weapons 2016 - US Military Superb F-22 Raptor Fighter Jet in Action. The Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor is a fifth-generation, single-seat, twin-engine, all-weather stealth tactical fighter aircraft developed for the United States Air Force (USAF). The result of the USAF's Advanced Tactical Fighter program, the aircraft was designed primarily as an air superiority fighter, but also has ground attack, electronic warfare, and signal intelligence capabilities.[6] The prime contractor, Lockheed Martin, built most of the F-22's airframe and weapons systems and did its final assembly, while Boeing provided the wings, aft fuselage, avionics integration, and training systems.
The aircraft was variously designated F-22 and F/A-22 before it formally entered service in December 2005 as the F-22A. After a protracted development and despite operational issues, the USAF considers the F-22 critical to its tactical air power, and says that the aircraft is unmatched by any known or projected fighter.[7] The Raptor's combination of stealth, aerodynamic performance, and situational awareness gives the aircraft unprecedented air combat capabilities.[8][9]
The high cost of the aircraft, a lack of clear air-to-air missions due to delays in Russian and Chinese fighter programs, a ban on exports, and development of the more versatile F-35 led to the end of F-22 production.[N 1] A final procurement tally of 187 operational production aircraft was established in 2009 and the last F-22 was delivered to the USAF in 2012.

PCSing from Overseas to Stateside (Air Force)
Recently I PCS'd to Nellis Air Force base in Las Vegas, Nevada from Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan. Kadena was my first duty station and I was there for 3 years. Nellis Air Force Base is my second assignment. The process to PCS can be extremely difficult, stressful, and overwhelming. Especially if it's your first or second time PCSing. Going from an overseas assignment to a stateside assignment doesn't make things easy either. The former Army Aviation was in its previous form intended for the direct support of the Ground Forces, by providing their tactical air support, conducting tactical aerial reconnaissance, transporting airborne troops, providing fire support of their actions, electronic warfare, setting of minefield barriers and other tasks. The former Army Aviation is now managed by the Chief of the Department of Army Aviation, who in mid-2007 was Lieutenant General Anatoly Surtsukov.[6]
In October 2004 the disbandment was announced of the 200th and 444th Bomber Aviation Regiments with Tupolev Tu-22M3, of the 28th, 159th, 790th, and 941st Fighter Aviation Regiments, of the 302nd and 959th Regiments equipped with Sukhoi Su-24, and of the 187th and 461st Assault Aviation Regiments with the Sukhoi Su-25.[7] These disbandments did not go ahead.
The Air Force continues to suffer from a lack of resources for pilot training. In the 1990s Russian pilots achieved approximately 10% of the flight hours of the United States Air Force. The 2007 edition of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) Military Balance listed pilots of tactical aviation flying 20–25 hours a year, 61st Air Army pilots (former Military Transport Aviation), 60 hours a year, and Army Aviation under VVS control 55 hours a year.[8]
General Mikhailov was succeed by General Colonel Aleksandr Zelin in 2007. Zelin said in August 2007 that by 2011 the Air Force would deploy advanced unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) with flight range of up to 400 kilometers (250 mi) and flight duration of up to 12 hours.[9] The UAVs of both fixed- and rotary-wing types will perform a variety of tasks, including reconnaissance, attack, retransmission of radio signals and target designation, he said.[9]
In August 2007, the commander of the 16th Air Army, General Major Alexander Belevitch, said that the 16th Air Army would soon receive two regiments of the advanced Su-34 Fullback fighter-bombers in the near future.[10] However, as of 2010, only 16 Su-34s are in service, and only one frontline unit has received any aircraft.[11] Belevitch also said the formation would receive MiG-29SM 'Fulcrum' fighters to replace outdated MiG-29s and modernised Su-25 Frogfoot close support aircraft, which showed outstanding performance during operations in Afghanistan, Chechnya and other "hot spots."[10]
Russia resumed the Soviet-era practice of sending its bomber aircraft on long-range flights at a permanent basis in July and August 2007, after a 15-year unilateral suspension due to fuel costs and other economic difficulties after the collapse of the Soviet Union.[12][13] Patrols towards the North Pole, the Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean were reinstated, bringing the planes often close to NATO territory, most recently flying over the Irish Sea, between the UK and Ireland.[14]
In 2008 the Air Force lost between 4 and 7 aircraft to Georgian anti-aircraft fire during the 2008 South Ossetian War.
Warfare.ru indicates that in early 2009 the Air Force went through a major restructuring, in which air armies were succeeded by commands, and most air regiments becoming airbases.[15] However, Combat Aircraft, in a piece by Stefan Buttner in its August–September 2009 issue, presented the order of battle as being substantially unchanged.[16] Eventually Aviation Week & Space Technology confirmed that the reorganisation would be completed by December 2009 and would see a 40 percent reduction in aircrew numbers.[17]

Overview[edit]
Davis–Monthan Air Force Base is a key ACC installation. The 355th Fighter Wing (355 FW) is the host unit, providing medical, logistical, mission and operational support to all assigned units. This wing's combat mission is providing A-10 Thunderbolt II close air support and OA-10 forward air controllers to ground forces worldwide. The 355 FW provides initial and recurrent training to all U.S. Air Force A-10, OA-10 and EC-130 pilots and crews. The 355th is also the ACC's executive agent for INF and START treaty compliance.
One of the wing's tenant units, the 55th Electronic Combat Group, is tasked to provide command, control and communications countermeasures in support of tactical forces with its EC-130H aircraft; and, employing the EC-130E aircraft, provide airborne command, control and communications capabilities for managing tactical air operations in war and other contingencies worldwide.
Two other major tenants, the 563rd Rescue Group (structured under the 23d Wing, Moody Air Force Base) and 943rd Rescue Group (structured under the 920th Rescue Wing, Patrick Air Force Base), are tasked to provide combat search and rescue support worldwide.
As the location of the Air Force Materiel Command's 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (AMARG), Davis–Monthan Air Force Base is the sole aircraft boneyard for excess military and government aircraft. Tucson's dry climate and alkali soil made it an ideal location for aircraft storage and preservation.

He kept a log containing names of the field's customers, including Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart, Benjamin Foulois, and Jimmy Doolittle. Doolittle, awarded the Medal of Honor for his 1942 Tokyo raid, was the first military customer at the field on 9 October 1927. The combination of civil and military operations worked well until the early 1940s, when military requirements began to require the relocation of civil aviation activities.

It was established in 1925 as Davis-Monthan Landing Field. The host unit headquartered at Davis–Monthan is the 355th Fighter Wing assigned to Twelfth Air Force, part of Air Combat Command (ACC). The base is best known as the location of the Air Force Materiel Command's 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (AMARG), the aircraft boneyard for all excess military and government aircraft.
Overview[edit]
Davis–Monthan Air Force Base is a key ACC installation. The 355th Fighter Wing (355 FW) is the host unit, providing medical, logistical, mission and operational support to all assigned units. This wing's combat mission is providing A-10 Thunderbolt II close air support and OA-10 forward air controllers to ground forces worldwide. The 355 FW provides initial and recurrent training to all U.S. Air Force A-10, OA-10 and EC-130 pilots and crews. The 355th is also the ACC's executive agent for INF and START treaty compliance.
One of the wing's tenant units, the 55th Electronic Combat Group, is tasked to provide command, control and communications countermeasures in support of tactical forces with its EC-130H aircraft; and, employing the EC-130E aircraft, provide airborne command, control and communications capabilities for managing tactical air operations in war and other contingencies worldwide.
Two other major tenants, the 563rd Rescue Group (structured under the 23d Wing, Moody Air Force Base) and 943rd Rescue Group (structured under the 920th Rescue Wing, Patrick Air Force Base), are tasked to provide combat search and rescue support worldwide.
As the location of the Air Force Materiel Command's 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (AMARG), Davis–Monthan Air Force Base is the sole aircraft boneyard for excess military and government aircraft. Recently I PCS'd to Nellis Air Force base in Las Vegas, Nevada from Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan. Kadena was my first duty station and I was there for 3 years. Nellis Air Force Base is my second assignment. The process to PCS can be extremely difficult, stressful, and overwhelming. Especially if it's your first or second time PCSing. Going from an overseas assignment to a stateside assignment doesn't make things easy either. When you PCS you will out process from your current base which includes several checklists and papers being signed to release you from the base. You'll also have to sell or transfer your vehicles and deal with leaving your house, doing final house cleaning and inspections. Then you'll fly or drive to your next duty station. Since I was stationed in Japan I had to fly from Okinawa all the way to Seattle. Then from Seattle Washington we rented a car and took 4 days to drive to Nellis Air Force base. When PCSing you're given travel days. These are days of non chargeable leave that you are authorized to take to get to your next duty station. For my PCS I was given 5 days. You can take longer than 5 days if you wish but they will charge you leave for anything past the 5 authorized days. We decided to not use my leave on this PCS so we took 5 days to arrive and then I checked in immediately. After arriving at Nellis AFB I started my in-processing. This is extremely stressful and confusing. It seems like everything needs to be done 2 or 3 times and nothing ever goes smooth or works out the first time. after a week of in-processing I took house hunting 10. In the Air Force you are authorized 10 days of house hunting which is non chargeable leave. Basically it means you get 10 days off for free to look for a place to stay. If you're buying a home. It can take nearly a month to close on a house. So the 10 days help for finding the house but then you have to work for the next month before you can move in. I just recently got back to work from my house hunting days and I'm still in-processing. hopefully things go smoothly the rest of the time I'm here. But so far PCSing has been extremely stressful and exhausting.

The U.S. Air Force's Basic Military Training (BMT) is eight and a half weeks long, as they do not count your first week ("Week 0"). BMT is 63 calendar days long. It is conducted at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas. Formerly, trainees were referred to as "Airman" from day one of BMT. This has been changed; now, personnel are referred to as Trainees until the Airman's Coin Ceremony in the eighth week of training, when they receive their Airman's Coin. Trainees receive military instruction (including the Air Force core values, flight and individual drill, and living area inspections), academic classes (covering topics such as Air Force history, dress and appearance, military customs and courtesies, ethics, security, and alcohol/drug abuse prevention and treatment), and field training (including protection against biological and chemical attack, basic marksmanship on the M-16 rifle as well as first aid). Following BMT, Airmen go to a technical school (or 'tech school') where they learn the specifics of their Air Force Specialty Code (AFSC), which is similar to the MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) in the Army and Marines, the Navy's NEC (Naval Enlisted Classification) code, or the Coast Guard's ratings.
All non-prior-service enlistees are required to complete BMT, including those enlisting in the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve Command. Reserve component enlistees receive the same training as their active-duty counterparts. Credit can be given on a case-by-case basis for enlistees with college credit, Eagle Scouts and service in the Civil Air Patrol qualify for promotion to E-2 (Airman) or E-3 (Airman First Class) upon graduation from BMT. The stripes are not worn until graduation, though trainees are paid at the higher pay grade.
Lackland AFB has been associated with BMT for almost the Air Force's entire history. From 1950 to 1956 300,000 airmen received BMT at Sampson Air Force Base in New York. In 1951, Parks Air Force Base in Dublin, California became a BMT center, with training beginning in March, 1952. BMT at Parks AFB ceased later in the decade and the installation was transferred to the US Army in 1959. For a brief time between 1966 and 1968, the Air Force operated a second BMT at Amarillo AFB, in Amarillo, Texas.
Unlike the Army and Navy, but like the Marine Corps (throughout boot camp) and Coast Guard (during the first section of boot camp), trainees are required to refer to all Airmen, enlisted and NCO's as well as commissioned and warrant officers, as "sir" or "ma'am." Trainees are required to preface speaking to Military Training Instructors with their "reporting statement:"
"Sir/Ma'am, Trainee (the recruit's surname) reports as ordered." or "Sir/Ma'am, Trainee (the recruit's surname) reports.", depending on who initiates the conversation.
An additional 2 weeks of BMT was added to the program on November 1, 2008, extending the duration of BMT from six and a half weeks to eight and a half weeks. BMT has been tailored to incorporate some of the additional warfighting skills to coincide with increased Air Expeditionary Force(AEF) rotations, and more frequent support of its sister services during those rotations.

The idea of designating specific military aircraft to transport the President arose in 1943, when officials of the United States Army Air Forces -- the predecessor to the U.S. Air Force -- became concerned with relying on commercial airlines to transport the President. A C-87 Liberator Express was reconfigured for use as a presidential transport; however, it was rejected by the Secret Service amid concerns over the aircraft's safety record. A C-54 Skymaster was then converted for presidential use; this aircraft, dubbed the Sacred Cow, transported President Franklin D. Roosevelt to the Yalta Conference in February 1945, and was subsequently used for another two years by President Harry S. Truman.
The "Air Force One" call sign was created after a 1953 incident during which a flight carrying President Dwight D. Eisenhower entered the same airspace as a commercial airline flight using the same call sign. Several aircraft have been used as Air Force One since the creation of the presidential fleet, including two Boeing 707s introduced in the 1960s and 1970s, respectively; since 1990, the presidential fleet has consisted of two Boeing VC-25As -- specifically configured, highly customized Boeing 747-200B series aircraft. The Air Force is looking into replacing the two VC-25 aircraft with three replacement aircraft beginning in 2017.
