Square metre
The square metre (International spelling as used by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures) or square meter (American spelling) is the SI derived unit of area, with symbol m2 (33A1 in Unicode). It is defined as the area of a square whose sides measure exactly one metre. The square metre is derived from the SI base unit of the metre, which itself is defined as the length of the path travelled by light in absolute vacuum during a time interval of 1/299,792,458 of a second.
Adding and subtracting SI prefixes creates multiples and submultiples; however, as the unit is squared, the order of magnitude difference between units doubles from their comparable linear units. For example, a kilometre is one thousand times the length of a metre, but a square kilometre is one million times the area of a square metre.

In thisTechKnow episode we see how a niche group of commercial farmers in the US is growing pesticide-free produce inside industrial warehouses with the help of artificial light. Green Sense Farms runs its vertical farm from a 2,800 square metre warehouse just outside Chicago. The farm is bathed in a pink glow - the effect of the thousands of red and blue LEDs - light-emitting diodes - which enable the plants to photosynthesise. In thisTechKnow episode we see how a niche group of commercial farmers in the US is growing pesticide-free produce inside industrial warehouses with the help of artificial light.
Green Sense Farms runs its vertical farm from a 2,800 square metre warehouse just outside Chicago. The farm is bathed in a pink glow - the effect of the thousands of red and blue LEDs - light-emitting diodes - which enable the plants to photosynthesise.
"We take weather out of the equation," explains Robert Colangelo, founder of Green Sense Farms. "We've created groundhog day here. Each day is consistent and it's the same, so we always get perfect plants every day."
Farming in a controlled environment means the plants grow within a certain time using 98 percent less water. At Green Sense Farms it takes about 42 days to grow a head of lettuce, which is from 3 to 17 days faster than it would take if grown in a field. Now, Green Sense is figuring out different red and blue light combinations to optimise growing other plants, such as chives or basil.
We also visit FarmedHere, another indoor farm, which uses an aquaponics growing system: waste from tilapia, a freshwater fish kept in tanks, is broken down by natural bacteria into nitrates, which is then cycled to the leafy greens grown there as fertiliser.
"Nitrates are the most available plant foods on the planet, so the nutrient-rich water from the fish tanks, is moved on to the area of our growth systems where the plants live. The plants take the nutrients, they filter the water, and the water recirculates back to the fish," explains Paul Hardej, cofounder of FarmedHere.
The indoor farm started off using fluorescent lighting, but are making the move to LEDs. It's the first commercial indoor farm to be certified as organic by the US Department of Agriculture.
While indoor farms are a nascent, growing industry, could they ever replace traditional farming? We put that question to some of the agricultural experts who appear in this episode.
We also head to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to see how conservationists are utilising the surrounding open, vacant land to save wildlife and bees. The Common Acre, a bee conservation group, has gone into partnership with the airport to develop a strain of stronger bees that can survive the harsh winter.
As Bob Redmond, the executive director of Common Acre tells us, bees are crucial as they "pollinate one third of everything that humans eat". But since 2006, he says, "there's a syndrome mostly affecting commercial beekeepers in which the colonies enter a doom cycle and they can't produce enough bees to survive so those populations collapse."
Near one of the main runways are natural wetlands, which attract birds that can get caught in the engines if they fly too close to the aircraft. We see how the airport's resident wildlife biologist has come up with creative ways to scare the birds away and to trap and relocate them to a green space about 100km from the airport.

Carpi is without a doubt a pearl of the Renaissance, it has a huge 16,000 square metre piazza - the largest in Emiglia Romagna and the 34th largest in Italy. Around the piazza are historic buildings. In many areas of the historic centre there are collonades which protect from the rain and the sun. I came to spend a day there and ended up staying nearly three weeks!
The town was founded in 752CE. The Pio family ruled the city from 1319 to 1525 and they gave their name to the magnificent palace on one side of the square. It includes parts from different ages, such as the merloned-tower of Passerino Bonaccolsi, the Renaissance façade and the tower of Galasso Pio, and the 17th century watch tower. It includes a chapel frescoed by Bernardino Loschi and Vincenzo Catena.
Unfortunately the town and surrounding area suffered in the earthquake and aftershocks of May and June 2012 with the result that the cathedral is still covered by scaffolding and many buildings are off bounds to visitors. The cathedral was originally designed by Baldassarre Peruzzi who was in contact with Leonardo da Vinci. Construction begun in 1514, baroque façade added in 1701 and cupola completed 1774. Peruzzi also designed the façade of the Church of Santa Maria in Castello.
There is a synagogue off the main square with views looking down on it. There was a ghetto in Carpi in one of the streets leading off from the piazza, the synagogue was opened in the nineteenth century but closed due to declining congregation numbers in 1922. There is still a Jewish cemetery on the outskirts of the town.
North of Carpi, we can find the former camp at Fossoli. This was initially a POW camp, being set up in May 1942. After the armistice of 8 September 1943, it became a holding camp for Jews destined for Auschwitz and other places. The camp can only be visited by seeking permission. There is a deportation museum in the Pio Palace which is somewhat sparse and there are blocks in the courtyard of the palace mentioning places where people were deported to and other areas of WW2 suffering, unfortunately completed rather badly with mistakes in both German and Polish.
Motorhome parking is available off via Peruzzi which has no facilities but is very convenient. Alternatively one can use the dedicated free site at Pizzale della Piscina which has grey and black water dump as well as fresh water (see campsites section).

Marina Bay Sands is an integrated resort fronting Marina Bay in Singapore. Prior to its opening in 2010, it was billed as the world's most expensive standalone casino property at S$8 billion, including the land cost.
The resort includes a 2,561-room hotel, a 120,000-square-metre (1,300,000 sq ft) convention-exhibition centre, the 74,000 m2 (800,000 sq ft) The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands mall, a museum, two large theatres, "celebrity chef" restaurants, two floating Crystal Pavilions, a skating rink, and the world's largest atrium casino with 500 tables and 1,600 slot machines. The complex is topped by a 340-metre-long (1,120 ft) SkyPark with a capacity of 3,900 people and a 150 m (490 ft) infinity swimming pool, set on top of the world's largest public cantilevered platform, which overhangs the north tower by 67 m (220 ft). The 20-hectare resort was designed by Moshe Safdie architects. The architect was Aedas, and they were responsible for employing all consultants and for developing, co-ordinating and implementing the design. Engineering was provided by Arup and Parsons Brinkerhoff (MEP). The main contractor was Ssangyong Engineering and Construction.
Originally set to open in 2009, Las Vegas Sands faced delays caused by escalating costs of material and labour shortages from the outset. The global financial crisis also pressured the company to delay its projects elsewhere to complete the integrated resort. Although Marina Bay Sands has been compared in scale and development costs to MGM's CityCenter, the latter is a mixed-use development, with condominium properties (comprising three of the seven main structures) being sold off.
The resort and SkyPark were officially opened on 23 and 24 June 2010 as part of a two-day celebration, following the casino's opening on 27 April that year. The SkyPark opened the following day. The theatres were completed in time for the first performance of Riverdance on 30 November. The indoor skating rink, which uses artificial ice, opened to a performance by Michelle Kwan on 18 December. The ArtScience Museum opened to the public and the debut of a 13-minute light, laser and water show called Wonder Full on 19 February 2011 marked the full completion of the integrated resort.
The grand opening of Marina Bay Sands was held on 17 February 2011. It also marked the opening of the seven celebrity chef restaurants. The musical The Lion King debuted on 3 March 2011. The last portion of the Marina Bay Sands, the floating pavilions, were finally opened to the public when the two tenants, Louis Vuitton and Pangaea Club, opened on 18 and 22 September 2011 respectively.
