The Nevada National Security Site (NNSS), previously the Nevada Test Site (NTS), is a United States Department of Energy reservation located in southeastern Nye County, Nevada, about 65 miles (105 km) northwest of the city of Las Vegas. Formerly known as the Nevada Proving Grounds, the site was established on 11 January 1951 for the testing of nuclear devices, covering approximately 1,360 square miles (3,500 km2) of desert and mountainous terrain. Nuclear testing at the Nevada Test Site began with a 1-kiloton-of-TNT (4.2 TJ) bomb dropped on Frenchman Flat on 27 January 1951. Many of the iconic images of the nuclear era come from the NTS.
During the 1950s, the mushroom clouds from the 100 atmospheric tests could be seen for almost 100 mi (160 km). The city of Las Vegas experienced noticeable seismic effects, and the distant mushroom clouds, which could be seen from the downtown hotels, became tourist attractions. St. George, Utah, received the brunt of the fallout of above-ground nuclear testing in the Yucca Flats/Nevada Test Site. Winds routinely carried the fallout of these tests directly through St. George and southern Utah. Marked increases in cancers, such as leukemia, lymphoma, thyroid cancer, breast cancer, melanoma, bone cancer, brain tumors, and gastrointestinal tract cancers, were reported from the mid-1950s through 1980. The vast majority—828 of the 928 total nuclear tests—were underground.
Nevada (Spanish for "snow covered") is a state in the Western, Mountain West, and Southwestern regions of the United States of America. Nevada is the 7th most extensive, the 35th most populous, and the 9th least densely populated of the 50 United States. Nearly three-quarters of Nevada's people live in Clark County, which contains the Las Vegas–Paradise metropolitan area where three of the state's four largest incorporated cities are located. Nevada's capital is Carson City. Nevada is officially known as the "Silver State" due to the importance of silver to its history and economy. It is also known as the "Battle Born State", because it achieved statehood during the Civil War (the words "Battle Born" also appear on the state flag); as the "Sagebrush State", for the native plant of the same name; and as "Sage hen State". Nevada borders Oregon to the northwest, Idaho to the northeast, California to the west, Arizona to the southeast and Utah to the east.
Nevada is largely desert and semiarid, much of it located within the Great Basin. Areas south of the Great Basin are located within the Mojave Desert, while Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada lie on the western edge. About 86% of the state's land is managed by various jurisdictions of the U.S. federal government, both civilian and military.

Next door to Area 51, the Nevada Test Site is a restricted area doing classified research BUT... not nearly as secret as some people imagine. The Dept. of Energy actually gives free tours of the area, something the Air Force probably won't be doing with Area 51. ;) This video includes historic footage of the Sedan explosion that made the world's biggest man-made crater.
A video that will atempt to show that the Nevada Nuclear Test Site is not what we've been led to believe it is but actually seems to have a second and much more secret agenda - namely to develop very advanced science and technology to utilize energy derived from underground nuclear explosions
From the KTVN archives: the Nevada Test Site. Underground explosive testing ceased in September 1992, and seen here is aerial footage of one of those tests. Also, video shot in 1994 near the site of the proposed nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain. The area is now referred to as the Nevada National Security Site.

Made in the 1950s, this Atomic Energy Commission film takes place at the AEC's Nevada test site as well as in the adjacent community of St. George, Utah (located over 135 miles distant). The organization of the tests are shown, emphasizing range safety and procedures, and an explanation is offered as to why the tests are so important to national security. Various atomic bomb effects are also discussed. The M65 Atomic Cannon, often called Atomic Annie, is shown being tested as part of Operation Upshot–Knothole. This was a series of eleven nuclear test shots conducted in 1953 at the Nevada Test Site. It followed Operation Ivy and preceded Operation Castle. Over 21,000 soldiers took part in the ground exercise Desert Rock V in conjunction with the Grable shot. Grable was a 280mm shell ...

From 1951 until 1992, the Nevada Test Site, which lies 65 miles outside of the Strip, was the central location for atomic testing. Throughout the 1950s giant mushroom clouds engulfed the desert skyline and were billed as an attraction (in 1962 the government started testing underground). Visitors to Las Vegas were encouraged to take snapshots and to pick up some Atomic bomb tchotchkes and souvenirs for their friends back at home. The museum, an affiliate of the Smithsonian, explores this history through galleries, videos, artifacts, memorabilia, and interactive displays. But dont worry its not all doom, gloom, and b...
Nevada Test Site is where nuclear atmospheric tests were conducted during the 1950s and early 1960s. Las Vegas experienced noticeable seismic effects, and the distant mushroom clouds, which could be seen from the downtown hotels, became tourist attractions. The Nevada Test Site was the primary testing location of American nuclear devices from 1951 to 1992; 928 announced nuclear tests occurred there. Of those, 828 were underground. Sixty-two of the underground tests included multiple, simultaneous nuclear detonations, adding 93 detonations and bringing the total number of NTS nuclear detonations to 1,021, of which 921 were underground. Each of the below ground explosions—some as deep as 5,000 feet—vaporized a large chamber, leaving a cavity filled with radioactive rubble. About a thir...

We visit the National Atomic Testing Museum in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Nevada Test Site or Area 51 was the premier testing grounds for the nuclear industry for decades. There is a lot of history to it and it's worth seeing.
Situated in the middle of the Mojave Desert, Las Vegas was founded just over 100 years ago in 1905. From its humble beginnings as a small desert outpost, the city has grown to become the self-styled entertainment capital of the world, attracting over 20 million visitors a year from all over the world. Globe Trekker Ian Wright spends a week in this non-stop, party city, exploring the fantastical hotels and neon casinos of "The Strip". He gains a bird's eye view of the city from atop The Stratosphere tower and takes his chances on the world's highest thrill ride, before undertaking some alternative sightseeing at Vegas' famously kitsch wedding chapels. Having over-indulged on one of Las Vegas' famous "all-you-can eat" breakfast buffets -- Ian gets a lesson in gambling at the local Hilton. ...

Read your free e-book: http://copydl.space/mebk/50/en/B01EAG3UXI/book On January 27, 1951, the first atomic weapon was detonated over a section of desert known as Frenchman Flat in southern Nevada, providing dramatic evidence of the Nevada Test Site's beginnings. Fifty years later, author A. Costandina Titus reviews contemporary nuclear policy issues concerning the continued viability of that site for weapons testing. Titus has updated her now-classic study of atomic testing with fifteen years of political and cultural history, from the mid-1980s Reagan-gorbachev nuclear standoff to the authorization of the Nevada Test Site Research Center, a Desert Research Institute facility scheduled to open in 2001. In this second edition of Bombs in the Backyard, Titus deftly covers the post-cold War ...

After the war ended, the West continued to be the ideal region for Cold War-era nuclear experimentation for the same reasons. In December 1950, the Atomic Energy Commission designated a large swath of unpopulated desert land 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas as the Nevada Proving Ground for atmospheric atomic testing. On January 27, 1951, the government detonated its first atomic device on the site, resulting in a tremendous explosion, the flash from which was seen as far away as San Francisco. The government continued to conduct atmospheric tests for six more years at the Nevada site. They studied the effects on humans by stationing ground troops as close as 2,500 yards from ground zero and moving them even closer shortly after the detonation. By 1957, though, the effects of radioactivity ...
Made in 1957, "Mission Fallout" shows the activities of volunteers who monitored the radiation released by the nuclear bomb tests in Nevada, and a group of specialists working for the Office of Civil and Defense Mobilization who demonstrate radiological detection equipment, including an in-depth look at plans for aerial monitoring of nuclear fallout. Operation Plumbbob was a series of nuclear tests conducted between May 28 and October 7, 1957, at the Nevada Test Site, following Project 57, and preceding Project 58/58A. It was the biggest, longest, and most controversial test series in the continental United States. The operation consisted of 29 explosions, of which only two did not produce any nuclear yield. Twenty-one laboratories and government agencies were involved. While most Opera...
Operation Teapot was a series of fourteen nuclear test explosions conducted at the Nevada Test Site in the first half of 1955. During shot "Wasp", ground forces took part in Exercise Desert Rock VI which included an armored task force "Razor" moving to within 900 meters of ground zero, under the still-forming mushroom cloud. The Civil Defense "Apple-2" shot on 5 May 1955 was intended to test various building construction types (nicknamed as "Survival Town") in a nuclear blast. A few of the buildings still stand at Area 1, Nevada Test Site. Information courtesy Wikipedia.org. . . I produced this documentary for the peace movement WAY back in 1987, but it still holds a lot of value in teaching about the theory and practice of non-violence for political change. People were arrested for trespass at the Nevada Test Site (a giant, high security swath of land in the middle of the desert near Las Vegas) where underground nuclear testing was happening on a regular basis. More than 100 copies of this film were distributed all over the country and contributed to inspiring thousands of people to come to the Nevada desert to commit non-violent civil disobedience. It was a powerful means of protest against the nuclear arms race. This movement, along with other efforts at the time, led to the U.S. and Soviet Union signing the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty in 1992.

With the exception of the Trinity shot in New Mexico, all previous weapons testing was conducted at the Pacific Proving Ground in the Marshall Islands area. From January through February, 1951, five airdrop tests were conducted. Some of the shots were designed to test trigger devices for weapons to be tested in Operation Greenhouse scheduled for the Spring: Able, January 27, 1 kiloton Baker, January 28, 8 kilotons Easy, February 1, 1 kiloton Baker-2, February 2, 8 kilotons Fox, February 6, 22 kilotons Because of the low yields of the devices, ...

While most Operation Plumbbob tests contributed to the development of warheads for intercontinental and intermediate range missiles, they also tested air defense and antisubmarine warheads with small yields. Operation Plumbbob had the tallest tower tests to date in the U.S. nuclear testing program, as well as high-altitude balloon tests. One nuclear test involved the largest troop maneuver ever associated with U.S. nuclear testing. Approximately 18,000 members of the...
