The Akiyoshido Cave will blow your mind. It is stunning and like walking through the movie Alien. It is in fact 300 million years old.
And Akiyoshido is still under construction - it feels like an underground Grand Canyon with a raging river going by you. Akiyoshido (秋芳洞) is part of the Akiyoshidai Quasi-National Park near Mine City in Yamaguchi, and is the largest limestone cave in Japan. In fact, it's one of the biggest in East Asia that is open to the public. It stretches over 9km long (only 1km is open to explore, however). It's almost impossible to wrap your head around how acidic water created the caverns over your head through eons, at the rate of about an inch per hundred years. The stalactites from the ceiling grow about 3cm (1.2") every 200 years from limestone water seeping in from the ceiling, and the stalagmites from the floor grow about the same every 4 centuries.
Above the caves you can also walk over Akiyoshidai, which is a mammoth karst plateau - basically the remains of a huge coral reef hundreds of millions of years ago. Around half a million years ago the area used to be heavily forested, and the cave was first discovered about 650 years ago.
This is one place that should be near the top of the list of any visit to Japan. But sadly, this place too is ignored or mostly unknown to the "experts" writing books on what to see.

Wisata Jepang: Gua Akiyoshido (Akiyoshidai) Menjelajah dengan Nyaman dan Nikmat Kota Mine, Yamaguchi Moopon.25
Dibawa Dataran Tinggi Akiyoshido, terdapat beberapa gua yang dikenal dengan “Gua Besar Batu kapur” yang terbentuk oleh erosi dari batu kapur. Gua yang terbesar merupakan Gua Akiyoshido (Akiyoshidai).
Gua Akiyoshido (Akiyoshidai), gua batu kapur terbesar di Asia Timur, dibuka di selatan kaki dataran tinggi Akiyoshido . Pintu masuk gua ketinggiannya mencapai 24 meter dan luasnya 8 meter. Didalam gua lebarnya mencapai 100 meter di titik terluasnya dan ketinggian nya 80 meter di titik tertinggi dindingnya.
Luas keseluruhannya dikatakan mencapai sekitar 10 kilometer.
Rute memandang biasanya panjangnya sekitar 1 kilometer dan termasuk 26 pemandangan terkenal seperti Koganebashira (Pilar Emas) dan Hyakumaizara (seratus Saucers).
Temperatur didalam gua konstan 170C ada semua musim. Dan semenjak rute perjalanannya dilengkapi dengan akomodasi seperti jalur berjalan dan lift, gua bisa dijelajahi dengan nikmat dan nyaman.
Sebagai salah satu yang diharapkan dari sebuah gua yang dikatakan gua terbaik dalam ukuran dan keindahan pemandangan di Asia Timur, tempat ini adalah dunia mistis di mana karya besar alami terpahat dan keindahan muncul satu demi satu.
Tempat ini diberi nama Gua Akiyoshido oleh Kaisar Hirohito, yang menjelajahi keindahannya saat berkunjung di tahun 1926.
Informasi Akses
Akiyoshidai sering digabungkan dengan mengunjungi Yamagushi di tenggara atau Hagi di Utara. Tidak ada jalur kereta api yang beroperasi di dekat daerah ini, dan kebanyakan orang tiba disini dengan menggunakan bus atau mobil.

Akiyoshidai Quasi-National Park
Akiyoshidai Kokutei Kōen (秋吉台国定公園) is a Quasi-National Park in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. It was founded on 1 November 1955 and has an area of 45.02 km².
It includes part of the Akiyoshi plateau (秋吉台, Akiyoshidai), a 130 square kilometre area of karst topography, as well as over 400 limestone caves, including Japan’s longest cave, the Akiyoshidō (秋芳洞), which has the additional status of a Special Natural Monument. The area is rated a protected landscape (category Ib) according to the IUCN. Like all Quasi-National Parks in Japan, the park is managed by the local prefectural government.
The Akiyoshidai Groundwater System is a Ramsar Site and wetland of international importance.
Facilities
Akiyoshidai Quasi-National Park is served by a natural history museum, visitor centre, rest house, youth hostel and park headquarters building, and is traversed by a scenic roadway and several walking trails. Events include a fireworks festival in July, a “Karst Walk” in November, and an annual burning off of dry grasses in February called “Yamayaki”.

The Akiyoshido Cave will blow your mind. It is stunning and like walking through the movie Alien. It is in fact 300 million years old.
And Akiyoshido is still under construction - it feels like an underground Grand Canyon with a raging river going by you. Akiyoshido (秋芳洞) is part of the Akiyoshidai Quasi-National Park near Mine City in Yamaguchi, and is the largest limestone cave in Japan. In fact, it's one of the biggest in East Asia that is open to the public. It stretches over 9km long (only 1km is open to explore, however). It's almost impossible to wrap your head around how acidic water created the caverns over your head through eons, at the rate of about an inch per hundred years. The stalactites from the ceiling grow about 3cm (1.2") every 200 years from limestone water seeping in from the ceiling, and the stalagmites from the floor grow about the same every 4 centuries.
Above the caves you can also walk over Akiyoshidai, which is a mammoth karst plateau - basically the remains of a huge coral reef hundreds of millions of years ago. Around half a million years ago the area used to be heavily forested, and the cave was first discovered about 650 years ago.
This is one place that should be near the top of the list of any visit to Japan. But sadly, this place too is ignored or mostly unknown to the "experts" writing books on what to see.

Sebagai salah satu yang diharapkan dari sebuah gua yang dikatakan gua terbaik dalam ukuran dan keindahan pemandangan di Asia Timur, tempat ini adalah dunia mistis di mana karya besar alami terpahat dan keindahan muncul satu demi satu.
Tempat ini diberi nama Gua Akiyoshido oleh Kaisar Hirohito, yang menjelajahi keindahannya saat berkunjung di tahun 1926.
Informasi Akses
Akiyoshidai sering digabungkan dengan mengunjungi Yamagushi di tenggara atau Hagi di Utara. Tidak ada jalur kereta api yang beroperasi di dekat daerah ini, dan kebanyakan orang tiba disini dengan menggunakan bus atau mobil.
Dari Yamaguchi
Bus JR beroperasi antara stasiun Yamaguchi dan Akiyoshido (55 menit, 1210 yen, 9-10 perjalanan per hari), sedangkan Bus Bacho beroperasi antara Stasiun Shin-Yamaguchi dan Akiyoshido (45 menit, 1170 yen, 7-9 perjalanan per hari). Tiket Japan rail bisa dipakai di Bus JR tapi tidak pada Bus Bocho.
Dari Hagi
Dua Bus Bocho beroperasi antara Hagi, Akiyoshidai (65 menit, 1720 yen) dan Akiyoshido (70 menit 1810 yen). Tiket Japan Rail tidak bisa dipakai pada bus ini.

We visit the Yamaguchi prefecture to check out the Kamon Wharf fish market, and the Akiyoshi-do cave. This was filmed in mid May. While at the fish market we tried both fugu (blowfish) and 2 types of whale sushi. Whale meat, and whale bacon. Taste wise I would have mistaken the meat for beef, and the bacon for pork bacon. The Akiyoshi limestone that composes the Akiyoshidai Plateau was formed about three hundred million years ago when a coral reef heaved upward as the result of movements in the earth's crust.
One property of limestone is that it dissolves in rainwater. From that property, a uniquely eroded landscape (karst landscape) was created.
That ancient coral reef evolved into a vast grassland area, which has thrived to this day.Visitors to the Akiyoshidai Plateau can enjoy viewing a variety of scenic features throughout the four seasons.
Spring
It’s thee most comfortable and refreshing season with aboudant plant life like pulsatilla cernua and brakes (a type of fern).
Summer
Fall flowers of plants such as kawaranadeshiko (Dianthus superbus var. longicalycinus) and koniyuri (Lilium leichtlinii var. tigrinum) start to bloom. Visitors can also enjoy beautiful starry skies at night. The biggest event in the season is the Fireworks Festival.
Fall
It offers very colorful scenery as various plants and Japanese silver grass shined by the sunlight. Fall it a wonderful season in which to enjoy the beauty of flowers along with spring. In October a Karst Walk through the Akiyoshidai Plateau is held.
Winter
From late fall into winter, the beauty of the dry grassy plain is impressive. On the third Sunday in February each year, a "mountain-burning event" is held in which flames spread across the grassy plain.
How to get there
Akiyoshidai is often combined with a visit to Yamaguchi in the southeast and/or Hagi in the north. No train lines run close to the area, and most people will arrive by bus or car.
From Yamaguchi
JR Bus operates buses between Yamaguchi Station and Akiyoshido (55 minutes, 1210 yen, 9-10 round trips per day), while Bocho Bus operates buses between Shin-Yamaguchi Station and Akiyoshido (45 minutes, 1170 yen, 7-9 round trips per day). The Japan Rail Pass is valid on JR buses but not on Bocho buses.
From Hagi
Bocho Bus operates two buses between Hagi, Akiyoshidai (65 minutes, 1720 yen) and Akiyoshido (70 minutes, 1810 yen). The Japan Rail Pass is not valid on these buses.
