There are five sections of Portland, Oregon and 95 officially recognized neighborhoods, each of which is represented by a volunteer-based neighborhood association. These associations serve as the liaison between residents and the city government, as coordinated by the city's Office of Neighborhood Involvement (ONI). The city subsequently provides funding to this "network of neighborhoods" through district coalitions, which are groupings of neighborhood associations.
Downtown Portland lies in the Southwest section between the I-405 freeway loop and the Willamette River, centered on Pioneer Courthouse Square ("Portland's living room"). Downtown and many other parts of inner Portland have compact square blocks (200 ft [60 m] on a side) and narrow streets (64 ft [20 m] wide), a pedestrian-friendly combination.
Many of Portland's recreational, cultural, educational, governmental, business, and retail resources are concentrated downtown, including:
Portland (/ˈpɔːrtlənd/) is the largest city in the U.S. state of Oregon and the seat of Multnomah County. It is located in the Willamette Valley region of the Pacific Northwest, at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers. The city covers 145 square miles (376 km²) and had an estimated population of 619,360 in 2014, making it the 28th most populous city in the United States. Approximately 2,348,247 people live in the Portland metropolitan statistical area (MSA), the 24th most populous MSA in the United States. Its Combined Statistical Area (CSA) ranks 17th with a population of 3,022,178. Roughly 60 percent of Oregon's population resides within the Portland metropolitan area.
Named after the city in Maine, Portland was settled in the 1830s near the end of the Oregon Trail. Its water access provided convenient transportation of goods, and the timber industry was a major force in the city's early economy. At the turn of the 20th century, the city had developed a reputation as one of the most dangerous port cities in the world, a hub for organized crime and racketeering. After the city's economy experienced an industrial boom during World War II, its hard-edged reputation began to dissipate. Beginning in the 1960s, Portland became noted for its growing liberal political values, and the city has earned a reputation as a bastion of counterculture, a view which has proceeded into the 21st century. According to a 2009 Pew Research Center study, Portland ranks as the 8th most popular American city, based on where people want to live.

Mount Tabor (Hebrew: הַר תָּבוֹר, Modern Har Tavor, Tiberian Har Tāḇôr, Arabic: جبل الطور, Jabal aṭ-Ṭūr) is located in Lower Galilee, Israel, at the eastern end of the Jezreel Valley, 11 miles (18 km) west of the Sea of Galilee. It was the site of the Mount Tabor battle between Barak under the leadership of the Israelite judge Deborah, and the army of Jabin commanded by Sisera, in the mid 12th century BC. It is believed by many Christians to be the site of the Transfiguration of Jesus. It is known as Har Tavor in Hebrew, Itabyrium in the Graeco-Roman world, Jebel et-Tur in Arabic, and the Mount of Transfiguration in Christian context.
Mount Tabor is shaped almost like a half-sphere, suddenly rising from rather flat surroundings and reaching a height of 575 metres (1,886 feet), thus dominating by a good 450 metres the next town in the plain below, Kfar Tavor. The Catholic church at the top is well visible from afar. At the base it is almost fully surrounded by the Arab villages of Daburiyya, Shibli, and Umm al-Ghanam.
Oregon (i/ˈɔːrᵻɡən/ AWR-ə-gən) is a state in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. Oregon is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean, on the north by Washington, on the south by California, on the east by Idaho, and on the southeast by Nevada. The Columbia River delineates much of Oregon's northern boundary, and the Snake River delineates much of the eastern boundary. The parallel 42° north delineates the southern boundary with California and Nevada. It is one of only three states of the contiguous United States to have a coastline on the Pacific Ocean, and the proximity to the ocean heavily influences the state's mild winter climate, despite the latitude.
Oregon was inhabited by many indigenous tribes before Western traders, explorers, and settlers arrived. An autonomous government was formed in the Oregon Country in 1843, the Oregon Territory was created in 1848, and Oregon became the 33rd state on February 14, 1859. Today, at 98,000 square miles, Oregon is the ninth largest and, with a population of 4 million, 26th most populous U.S. state. The capital of Oregon is Salem, the second most populous of its cities, with 160,614 residents (2013 estimate). With 609,456 residents (2013 estimate), Portland is the largest city in Oregon and ranks 29th in the U.S. Its metro population of 2,314,554 (2013 estimate) is 24th. The Willamette Valley in western Oregon is the state's most densely populated area, home to eight of the ten most populous cities.

In this travel video tour of Portland, Oregon, I travel to Portland, one of the most unique cities in the United States. I started my trip off by hopping off a plane and then immediately hopping onto a bus. But not just any bus, a bus operated by Brewvana Brewery Tours, the mostly women-run craft beer brewery tour company. Portland, or know as Beervana to some, is home to 55 breweries within its borders, and is truly a beer-lover's paradise. On my tour we made stops at Rogue Ales & Spirits, Laurelwood Pubic House & Brewery, Widmer Brothers Brewery and Sidecar Bar, where I had the chance to sit down over a pint with the founder and owner of Brewvana, Ashley Rose Salvitti. While in Portland, I stayed at the Tiny House Hotel, a hotel made up of, you guessed it, tiny houses. In the next po...

After Harvey Rice walked slowly to the center of the Lodge Pole Pine Conference Room in the Portland Building, he turned to face the crowd. Staring back were 60 or so people. So many attended the city-sponsored Black History Month lecture that they filled every seat, stood along the walls and gathered in doorways. They gave up their lunch hour to hear Portland State University instructor Felicia Williams explain how the...

This is a digital remaster done in 2017. A 2002 documentary about gentrification in the black neighborhoods of Portland, Oregon. In the early stages of gentrification improvements are often seen as a solution to persistent crime and blight. But as homeowners replace renters a new class bias can emerge that transcends race. This edition of the film was remastered in 2017 for improved color and sound. The Story: Nikki Williams struggles to provide a decent life for her 10-year-old daughter. She takes on drug dealers and a developer intent on creating low-income housing in her neighborhood. While public officials emphasize the need for new affordable housing that will prevent displacement caused by gentrification, opponents fear that the new property will attract crime. Tacos, ceviche and burgers: street food isn’t just cuisine, it’s part of cultural identity. Each region in the Americas has its own culinary delights. On every street corner, chefs are busy frying, grilling and roasting. Food trucks and street vendors all have a story to tell. Our journey begins in Portland, Oregon, where chefs in food trucks are hard at work, serving up mouthwatering dishes to hungry crowds. And it’s not much different in Mexico. The only thing more important to Mexicans than food is family. That’s probably why Viktor Navarrete always has a smile on his face. He and his family sell what they’re convinced are the best tacos in Mexico City. In Cartagena in Colombia, fishermen gather at the market to grill their catches after a hard day’s work. Nicole Alvarez grew up in a typical American suburban neighborhood: spacious homes, large yards, and not walkable to town. Then she began her architecture education and spent some time abroad during college- living in Prague, Czech Republic and Aix-en-Provence, France- and fell in love with the European size streets, walking commutes and small apartments. Back home in Raleigh, North Carolina, she wanted to live in something downtown where she could walk, bike or bus everywhere. Small apartments aren't so easy to find here, but she beat out the competition on a 300-square-foot studio above a dentist's office. With her new home her love for small spaces grew even deeper so she started the site Intentionally Small to blog about her own experiences and those of other tiny home tenants. She's...
