Newport, Oregon

Newport is a city in Lincoln County, Oregon, United States. It was incorporated in 1882, though the name dates back to the establishment of a post office in 1868. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 9,989, an increase of nearly 5% over its 2000 population; as of 2013, it had an estimated population of 10,117.

Newport is the county seat of Lincoln County. It is also the home of the Oregon Coast Aquarium, Hatfield Marine Science Center, Nye Beach, Yaquina Head Lighthouse, and Rogue Ales.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.59 square miles (27.43 km²), of which 9.05 square miles (23.44 km²) is land and 1.54 square miles (3.99 km²) is water.

Newport has mild, wet weather throughout the year with the heaviest precipitation falling during the winter months. The city averages 0.4 days annually with maximum temperatures of 90 °F (32 °C) or higher and 29 days with minimum temperatures of 32 °F (0 °C) or lower. Historic extreme temperatures have varied between 1 °F (−17 °C) in winter and 100 °F (38 °C) in summer.

Oregon (ⁱ/ˈɔːrᵻɡən/ AWR-ə-gən) is a state in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. Oregon is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean, on the north by Washington, on the south by California, on the east by Idaho, and on the southeast by Nevada. With 609,456 residents (2013 estimate), Portland is the largest city in Oregon and ranks 29th in the U.S. Its metro population of 2,314,554 (2013 estimate) is 24th. The Willamette Valley in western Oregon is the state's most densely populated area, home to eight of the ten most populous cities.
