Modern (political party)

Modern (Polish: Nowoczesna, styled as .Nowoczesna), is a liberal political party in Poland founded in late May 2015 by the economist Ryszard Petru.

The party received 7.6% of votes in the 2015 Polish parliamentary election, which resulted in winning 28 seats in Sejm. Paweł Kobyliński, elected to the Sejm from Kukiz'15's electoral list moved to Modern's parliamentary group in December 2015, thus the party now has 29 seats.

Formation

The movement was founded in late May 2015 as NowoczesnaPL (ModernPL) by economist Ryszard Petru. Due to some controversy over its name – there had already been a non-governmental organization called Fundacja Nowoczesna Polska (Modern Poland Foundation) – in August 2015, the movement's name was changed to .Modern (.Nowoczesna). Around the same time, the party's new logo was presented, and Kamila Gasiuk-Pihowicz became its spokesperson.

History

Didone types were developed by printers including Firmin Didot, Giambattista Bodoni and Justus Erich Walbaum, whose eponymous typefaces, Bodoni, Didot, and Walbaum, remain in use today. Their goals were to create more elegant, classical designs of printed text, developing the work of John Baskerville in Birmingham and Fournier in France towards a more extreme, precise design with intense precision and contrast, showing off the increasingly refined printing and paper-making technologies of the period. These trends were also accompanied by changes to page layout conventions and the abolition of the long s.

Modern (album)

Modern is the sixth studio album by English pop punk band Buzzcocks. It was released on 7 September 1999 by record label Go-Kart. It was arranged and produced by Tony Barber.

Reception

Critical response to Modern has been mixed-to-negative.

Michael Sandlin of Pitchfork called it "wholly ill-conceived and mind-numbingly dull" and that "[it] seems like a weak attempt by a once-great band to simply sound 'current', whatever that means." Joshua Klein of The A.V. Club, on the other hand, wrote "the band reunited in time to ride the new punk wave, but something was missing from its two capable comeback albums. The new Modern is something else entirely: Essentially picking up where the band left off in 1981, the ironically-titled disc sounds like it was recorded just as punk turned into new wave", calling it "retro in the best sense".

Combat

Combat or fighting is a purposeful violent conflict meant to weaken, establish dominance over, or kill the opposition, or to drive the opposition away from a location where it is not wanted or needed.

The term combat (French for fight) typically refers to armed conflict between opposing military forces in warfare, whereas the more general term "fighting" can refer to any physical or verbal conflict between individuals or nations. Combat violence can be unilateral, whereas fighting implies at least a defensive reaction. A large-scale fight is known as a battle. A verbal fight is commonly known as an argument.

Background

Combat may take place under a specific set of rules or be unregulated. Examples of rules include the Geneva Conventions (covering the treatment of people in war), medieval chivalry, the Marquess of Queensberry rules (covering boxing) and several forms of combat sports.

Combat in warfare involves two or more opposing military organizations, usually fighting for nations at war (although guerrilla warfare and suppression of insurgencies can fall outside this definition). Warfare falls under the laws of war, which govern its purposes and conduct, and protect the rights of combatants and non-combatants.

Combat!

Combat! is an American television program that originally aired on ABC from 1962 until 1967. (The exclamation point in Combat! was a stylized bayonet.) The show covered the grim lives of a squad of American soldiers fighting the Germans in France during World War II. (The episode "A Day In June" shows D-Day as a flashback, hence the action occurs during and after June 1944.) The program starred Rick Jason as platoon leader Second Lieutenant Gil Hanley and Vic Morrow as Sergeant "Chip" Saunders. The series was unusual in that Jason and Morrow would play the lead in alternating episodes. The series was unique, not only for television but also film, in that depictions of people from various and sundry European nations spoke in their native tongue without the use of subtitles for the viewing audience.

Broadcast history

Combat! premiered on ABC on October 2, 1962, and was broadcast for five seasons. TV's longest-running World War II drama (as of February 2016), Combat! aired 152 hour-long episodes. The first four seasons, spanning 127 episodes, were produced in black and white, with the final season, 25 episodes long, filmed in color. The show was developed by Robert Pirosh, who wrote the pilot episode.

Combat (juggling)

Combat juggling is a sport played by two or more players juggling three juggling clubs each. Combat can be played individually against a single opponent (one-on-one-combat), between teams of two or more players each, or in a group where everyone plays against everyone. The object of the game is to maintain the own juggling pattern while attempting to make the opponent drop one or more clubs.

Rules and gameplay

Basic rules

The players start juggling three clubs at the same time. Players are allowed to interfere with other players' patterns in an attempt to make them drop. They should only attack their opponents' clubs, not their opponents' bodies. Anyone who is no longer juggling at least three clubs (because they dropped, collected, or had a club stolen by an opponent) is out of the game. The last person left juggling wins.

One-on-one-combat

The player who drops will not gain a point, while the player who maintains the juggling longer than the opponent and finishes its pattern cleanly, i.e. catches all three clubs without dropping, will.
