Bill Nye

William Sanford "Bill" Nye (born November 27, 1955), popularly known as Bill Nye the Science Guy, is an American science educator, comedian, television presenter, actor, writer, scientist, and former mechanical engineer, best known as the host of the Disney/PBS children's science show Bill Nye the Science Guy (1993–1998) and for his many subsequent appearances in popular media as a science educator.

Early life and education

Nye was born on November 27, 1955, in Washington, D.C., to Jacqueline (née Jenkins; 1921–2000), a codebreaker during World War II, and Edwin Darby "Ned" Nye (1917–1997), also a World War II veteran, whose experience without electricity in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp led him to become a sundial enthusiast. His maternal grandmother was French, from Dancevoir.

After attending Lafayette Elementary and Alice Deal Junior High in the city, he was accepted to the private Sidwell Friends School on a partial scholarship and graduated in 1973. He studied mechanical engineering at Cornell University (where he took an astronomy class taught by Carl Sagan) and graduated with a B.S. in mechanical engineering in 1977. Nye occasionally returns to Cornell as a guest-lecturer of introductory-level astronomy and human ecology classes.

Everybody’s terrified of Ebola because you can’t see it and as the saying goes this is not my idea. People aren’t afraid of dying so much as they’re afraid of how they’re going to die. And the Ebola death looks horrible. It’s awful. And what’s making it worse in Africa in particular is scientific illiteracy. People not realizing that these microorganisms get passed from one to another. When I was in South Africa – I guess it’s five years ago a guy told a story – he was from a village, a small village. He was working for the South African Space Agency which they have. And he says it’s going to villages where kids have never seen a magnet and they recommend that you don’t go near that tree because the lightening bird landed on that tree and that means that tree will get struck by lightning and the tree branch will fall on you. And that’s not true by the way. So by having a population of people who don’t really understand germs and how serious they are, the germ gets spread really readily. As far as people freaking out here in the U.S., it’s appropriate. However, the same legislatures when it comes to climate change say well I’m not a scientist. I can’t have an opinion on climate change sure have a lot of opinions about Ebola. There’s a faction of our leaders, elected officials, who continually cuts the budget for the Centers for Disease Control which, to me reflects an ignorance of how serious germs can be. With infectious enthusiasm, Bill Nye shows that evolution is much more than a rebuttal to creationism; it is an essential way to understand how nature works—and to change the world. The Science Guy himself Bill Nye was brought in to CNN’s New Day this morning to examine some of the devastating effects of the flooding in Louisiana that has left over 60,000 homes badly damaged. “I don’t ave the answer to this,” he said of the crisis, “but it’s going to get worse. It’s certainly going to get worse,” Nye told CNN’s Chris Cuomo. “As the ocean gets warmer — which it is getting — it expands… [M]olecules spread apart. And then as the sea surface is warmer, water evaporates. And so, it’s very reasonable that these storms are connected to these big effects,” he said, linking the ongoing debate of climate change to the serious consequences around the global community. The longtime host of the children’s show Bill Nye The Science Guy on PBS continued his educated assault, identifying many of the other issues that stem from climate irregularities. When people are forced to move from their homes as a result of storm damage, for instance, “…then what’s going to happen to all that copper wiring? And all that copper plumbing? Somebody’s going to show up and salvage it, or somebody’s going to show up and loot it, which will lead to all sorts of criminal activity?” But right before the interview was over, Nye can be seen carefully weighing something in this head. And moments before Cuomo can pull it to a close, the Science Guy blurts out: “And you know, here at CNN you have, essentially, a climate change denier meteorologist. Knock yourselves out, but this is a big problem and it’s not going to go away.” The culprit isn’t named, but it isn’t hard to deduce his target: CNN’s Chad Myers, a meteorologist and weather correspondent for the network based in Atlanta who has embroiled himself in controversy for his, at times, denial of emerging climate science. In 2008, Myers told Lou Dobbs, “To think that we could affect weather all that much is pretty arrogant.” Myers also told CNN’s Ali Velshi in 2010 that TV meteorologists push the hoax of climate change because their jobs would be threatened otherwise: I also think it has something to do — follow the money a little bit. Meteorologists aren’t paid by the government, the ones on TV, the climatologists are. If there’s nothing to talk about, will their jobs really be all that secure? So, follow the money a little bit, I think you’ll find 10% and 15% and every little corner has to do with it. “The globe is warming, trust me on this one, we know we’re losing ice caps,” Myers admitted to Velshi admitted however. “Another conversation for another day,” concluded Cuomo simply this morning, doing his best to step over the landmine laid carefully by the Science Guy. Watch the above interview from CNN’s New Day.

As you know, President Obama celebrated Earth Day this week by visiting the Florida Everglades where he spoke about the threat that climate change poses to our economy and to the world, in the latest part of his effort to call attention to act on the threat of climate change. The President also announced how we're investing millions in new funding to protect our parks, as well as new actions the Department of Agriculture will take in partnership with farmers, ranchers and forest land owners to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions. While in Florida the President sat down with Bill Nye the Science Guy in the Everglades to discuss climate change, conservation, and science education in America.

According to Bill Nye, aka "the science guy," if grownups want to "deny evolution and live in your world that's completely inconsistent with everything we observe in the universe, that's fine, but don't make your kids do it because we need them." -- Transcript: Denial of evolution is unique to the United States. I mean, we're the world's most advanced technological—I mean, you could say Japan—but generally, the United States is where most of the innovations still happens. People still move to the United States. And that's largely because of the intellectual capital we have, the general understanding of science. When you have a portion of the population that doesn't believe in that, it holds everybody back, really. Evolution is the fundamental idea in all of life science, in all of biology. It's like, it's very much analogous to trying to do geology without believing in tectonic plates. You're just not going to get the right answer. Your whole world is just going to be a mystery instead of an exciting place. As my old professor, Carl Sagan, said, "When you're in love you want to tell the world." So, once in a while I get people that really—or that claim—they don't believe in evolution. And my response generally is "Well, why not? Really, why not?" Your world just becomes fantastically complicated when you don't believe in evolution. I mean, here are these ancient dinosaur bones or fossils, here is radioactivity, here are distant stars that are just like our star but they're at a different point in their lifecycle. The idea of deep time, of this billions of years, explains so much of the world around us. If you try to ignore that, your world view just becomes crazy, just untenable, itself inconsistent. And I say to the grownups, if you want to deny evolution and live in your world, in your world that's completely inconsistent with everything we observe in the universe, that's fine, but don't make your kids do it because we need them. We need scientifically literate voters and taxpayers for the future. We need people that can—we need engineers that can build stuff, solve problems. It's just really hard a thing, it's really a hard thing. You know, in another couple of centuries that world view, I'm sure, will be, it just won't exist. There's no evidence for it. Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) appeared on Meet the Press on Sunday to debate former television host Bill Nye about the effects of climate change and how best to address those impacts through public policy. Blackburn spent much of the interview debating Meet the Press host David Gregory who asked a series of pointed questions which challenged her underlying assumptions. Gregory began by citing a post in The Atlantic which summarized the Republican position on man-made global warming as acknowledging it exists but being wary of the proposed remedies which would negatively impact economic growth. "The fix can be very expensive in the short-term for long-term gain," Gregory said. Blackburn countered by asserting that "there is not consensus" that a slight increase in carbon in the atmosphere has resulted in widespread environmental effects. She cited a series of academic reports that challenge the notion of consensus.

    Love Is

    If I were rain
You could watch the colours bleed
    If I were time
We could go to where we're happy
    If I were tease
    Every evening we'd die laughing
    I am love
    I am love
Love is not not good enough (love is..)
Love is not not good enough (love is..)
Love is not not good enough (love is..)
    Love never is
    If I were words
I would turn a phrase of you
    If I were star
    The sky-like eye would open
    If I were the sea
A wave from you might drown me
    I am love
    I am love
Love is not not good enough (love is..)
Love is not not good enough (love is..)
Love is not not good enough (love is..)
    Love never is
    Love, love is everywhere
    Every day
    Every way
She's got a mind of her own
    Love is bigger than me
    Bigger than you so
Just let in in and stop thinking to yourself that
    I am love
    I am love
Love is not not good enough (love is..)
Love is not not good enough (love is..)
Love is not not good enough (love is..)
