Coffee Shop Girl
11 x 15 inches
This is an ink wash painting of Kate, a lovely and beautiful woman that I met at a coffee shop in Atlanta. And let it be known that this is my first attempt at ink wash. I've used watercolors before, and it's a similar technique, but with this portrait I practically just jumped right in. I dipped my toes in the water and took a couple of practice strokes, and then I dove right in.

To paint a horse, the ink wash painting artist must understand its temperament better than its muscles and bones. To paint a flower, there is no need to perfectly match its petals and colors, but it is essential to convey its liveliness and fragrance. East Asian ink wash painting may be regarded as a form of expressionistic art that captures the unseen.

Ink wash painting
Ink wash painting, also known as literati painting is an East Asian type of brush painting of Chinese origin that uses black ink—the same as used in East Asian calligraphy, in various concentrations. For centuries, this most prestigious form of Chinese art was practiced by highly educated scholar gentlemen or literati.
Names used in the cultures concerned include: in Chinese shuǐ mò huà (水墨畫), in Japanese sumi-e (墨絵) or suibokuga (水墨画), in Korean sumukhwa (수묵화), and in Vietnamese tranh thủy mặc (幀水墨).
History
Textual evidence suggests that Shan shui style painting existed during China's Liu Song dynasty of the fifth century. Ink wash painting developed further during the Tang Dynasty (618–907). The 8th-century poet/painter Wang Wei is generally credited as the painter who applied color to existing ink wash paintings. The art was further developed into a more polished style during the Song Dynasty (960–1279). It was introduced to Korea shortly after China's discovery of the ink.

Japan: Spirit and Form #4: Japanese Ink Painting: Landscapes of the Mind. This is the first episode in the series to devote most of its running time to images of art. We see ink paintings from China and Japan while the narrator, with some assistance from art critic Shuichi Kato, explains the origins of ink painting in China in the 7th century and how its techniques were adopted by Japanese artists in the 13th century, but with unique, more personal flourishes of their own. Review:
These are not my favorite paints but they did the trick on the painting. They conform to ASTM and have a toxicity rating of 0 with no known harmful chemicals. To me these seem like a childrens paint. The retail price for the 12 set of colors is $28 and for 24 colors it is $39. This seems too expensive for this quality of paint which feels more like a children tempera cake type of paint. However if it was all you could find or if you got a good deal on it it would do. That said if this set was $10 I would consider it a good buy because there is a lot of paint in the pans it seems.
Pros:
Convenient
Nice colors-plenty of mixing opportunities
Includes a brush and the palette has a nice mixing area.
Note: Grumbacher makes fine paints, but for me this set fell short and seems more like kids set. I recommend trying their Academy (student grade tubes) or Finest watercolor (tubes) for a better quality product.
Cons:
Price: Retail $28 seems high for the quality
The colors can be hard to liquefy but you can spray the palette 5 minutes before painting to help the paint liquify

These are not my favorite paints but they did the trick on the painting. They conform to ASTM and have a toxicity rating of 0 with no known harmful chemicals. To me these seem like a childrens paint. The retail price for the 12 set of colors is $28 and for 24 colors it is $39. This seems too expensive for this quality of paint which feels more like a children tempera cake type of paint. However if it was all you could find or if you got a good deal on it it would do. That said if this set was $10 I would consider it a good buy because there is a lot of paint in the pans it seems.
Pros:
Convenient
Nice colors-plenty of mixing opportunities
Includes a brush and the palette has a nice mixing area.
Note: Grumbacher makes fine paints, but for me this set fell short and seems more like kids set. I recommend trying their Academy (student grade tubes) or Finest watercolor (tubes) for a better quality product.
Cons:
Price: Retail $28 seems high for the quality
The colors can be hard to liquefy but you can spray the palette 5 minutes before painting to help the paint liquify

We see ink paintings from China and Japan while the narrator, with some assistance from art critic Shuichi Kato, explains the origins of ink painting in China in the 7th century and how its techniques were adopted by Japanese artists in the 13th century, but with unique, more personal flourishes of their own. Zen Buddhism played a great role in the development of ink painting in both countries. Kato takes us to Germany where we see impressionist works by Kandinsky and Jawlensky that were directly influenced by Japanese ink paintings, which were first displayed in Germany in 1909 at the time these men were experimenting with new styles. Narration in English by Ashley Thom. Music by Akira Mitake.
