Papeete
Papeete (pronounced [pa.pe.ʔe.te]) is the capital of French Polynesia, an overseas country of France in the Pacific Ocean. The commune (municipality) of Papeete is located on the island of Tahiti, in the administrative subdivision of the Windward Islands, of which Papeete is the administrative capital. The French High Commissioner also resides in Papeete. It is the primary center of Tahitian and French Polynesian public and private governmental, commercial, industrial and financial services, the hub of French Polynesian tourism and a commonly used port of call. The Windward Islands are themselves part of the Society Islands. The name Papeete means "water from a basket".
The urban area of Papeete had a total population of 133,627 inhabitants at the August 2012 census, 25,769 of whom lived in the commune of Papeete proper.

The commune of Papeete is subdivided into eleven quartiers (wards):

Papeete (schooner)
The Papeete was a schooner built in 1891 by Matthew Turner, a San Francisco Bay Area shipbuilder who had extensive business interests in Tahiti. The ship was known for a fast passage from San Francisco to Tahiti of 17 days.
She was built to serve in the packet trade, as was the similarly named barquentine City of Papeete.
Schooner Papeete was still afloat in 1929.

Hello Tahiti!!! The one place that we were so excited to get to on this itinerary. After 6 days at sea, we finally reach land and stop off at the capital - Papeete. We take a bus tour right around the island and see some amazing sights. We then move over to Moorea to snorkel all day but that didn't go to plan at all. Finally, Raiatea was our last stop in Tahiti but the weather made us abort that port stop. Unfortunately not everything goes to plan when on tour. Enjoy this special part of the world. #tahiti #frenchpolynesia #roadtrip

What to do in Papeete, Tahiti on a long layover
Papeete is often a quick stopover for travelers heading to Bora Bora or other islands in French Polynesia, but did you know there's a LOT to do in Tahiti? One pro tip we did learn on this latest trip, though, is not to arrive on a Sunday. We flew into Papeete on Sunday around 6am and went straight to our downtown hotel to drop off our luggage. The famous Tahiti Pearl Market (Marché) closes at 10am on Sundays so we wanted to get there before it closed. The Market is one of the most fun places to shop in Tahiti thanks to the wide variety of jewelry, pearl qualities and fun local items. One thing we did not take into account, though, was that no restaurants or other shops are open at all on any Sunday. The Most Beautiful Flight - Air Tahiti to Bora Bora
I traveled on Air Tahiti to explore the beauty of French Polynesian islands. My flight is from Papeete to Bora Bora with a stop at Huahine. I was invited to fly in the cockpit jumpseat on Air Tahiti ATR 72-600. Our first leg from Papeete to Huahine took about 30 minutes flying at 12,000 ft. We had a clear view of Moorea on the way. Huahine is an island located among the Society Islands. Our flight brings in locals, tourists and daily supplies. Flying time to Bora Bora was just 15 minutes, at 4,000 ft. The weather becomes clear and I can see the turquoise-blue ocean and crystal-clear lagoon. The scenery was out of this world and it was one of the most beautiful flights I’ve taken. The capital of Tahiti is known as Papeete, and you’ll certainly be spending some time there while you’re on the island. Taking a walk through the capital can provide visitors with some unique sights, and there’s also the Papeete Market that offers tourists and locals alike plentiful amounts of unique and local food and wares. The Papeete Market is one of the best places to go looking for Tahitian pearls to take home as a souvenir, and also to grab some food!
If you want to experience Tahiti’s coasts, the easiest way to do so is by driving along the road that encircles the entire island along them. This road is only 70 miles long, but it may take you several hours to traverse it due to the predominantly low speeds of drivers in the area. Papeete is often a quick stopover for travelers heading to Bora Bora or other islands in French Polynesia, but did you know there's a LOT to do in Tahiti? One pro tip we did learn on this latest trip, though, is not to arrive on a Sunday.
We flew into Papeete on Sunday around 6am and went straight to our downtown hotel to drop off our luggage. The famous Tahiti Pearl Market (Marché) closes at 10am on Sundays so we wanted to get there before it closed. The Market is one of the most fun places to shop in Tahiti thanks to the wide variety of jewelry, pearl qualities and fun local items.
One thing we did not take into account, though, was that no restaurants or other shops are open at all on any Sunday. So after 3 hours of browsing and racing against the clock to buy things before closing, we were starving.
Thankfully, we ended up stumbling upon our new favorite place, 3 Brasseurs, that started serving food at 11am. So with 45 minutes to go, we had a drink and relaxed.
We love Tahiti - even on a Sunday - but if you have the choice, try arriving on any other day haha!

I traveled on Air Tahiti to explore the beauty of French Polynesian islands. My flight is from Papeete to Bora Bora with a stop at Huahine. I was invited to fly in the cockpit jumpseat on Air Tahiti ATR 72-600. Our first leg from Papeete to Huahine took about 30 minutes flying at 12,000 ft. We had a clear view of Moorea on the way.
Huahine is an island located among the Society Islands. Our flight brings in locals, tourists and daily supplies. Flying time to Bora Bora was just 15 minutes, at 4,000 ft. The weather becomes clear and I can see the turquoise-blue ocean and crystal-clear lagoon. The scenery was out of this world and it was one of the most beautiful flights I’ve taken.
There are no roads and no cars at Bora Bora airport. The only transportation is by boat to the main center or hotel. My flight back to Papeete was equally scenic, we flew low over some Tahitian overwater bungalow. Aviation plays an important role in transporting travelers and cargo supplies to these islands.

We set sail on an ocean passage from Mazatlan, Mexico to Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas Islands. Sailing across an ocean has been a long-held dream for us, but we were not planning on extending this cruise so far from home. But, we realized that if we were serious about bluewater cruising, the time was right. We decided to take the leap and sail 2800 nautical miles across the open ocean, reaching the fabled south sea islands. Cruising the South Pacific is on the bucket list for any sailor, and completing this passage has been one of the most rewarding experiences we have ever done. We left Mazatlan on March 23rd, and arrived at Nuku Hiva on April 16th, totalling 24 days and 9 hours at sea. Stormy weather - sailboat in distress at sea
This is when the fun ends ;-( The boat in peril is the SY Anita and the video was taken from the Wilhelm Kaisen, a 44m ship operated by the German Marine Rescue. The Wilhelm Kaisen assisted the SY Anita in distress and safely brought her to a harbor in Heligoland, a small German archipelago in the North Sea, in October 1997.

Julia is an Ingrid Ketch, designed by William Atkin and built in 1960. She is a traditional wooden boat, built of doug fir planking on oak frames. The length on deck is 37.5 ft and the waterline is 30 ft. She handled the open ocean brilliantly, it was obvious that this was exactly the type of sailing she was built for.

the Wilhelm Kaisen, a 44m ship operated by the German Marine Rescue. The Wilhelm Kaisen assisted the SY Anita in distress and safely brought her to a harbor in Heligoland, a small German archipelago in the North Sea, in October 1997.

The capital of Tahiti is known as Papeete, and you’ll certainly be spending some time there while you’re on the island. Taking a walk through the capital can provide visitors with some unique sights, and there’s also the Papeete Market that offers tourists and locals alike plentiful amounts of unique and local food and wares. The Papeete Market is one of the best places to go looking for Tahitian pearls to take home as a souvenir, and also to grab some food!
If you want to experience Tahiti’s coasts, the easiest way to do so is by driving along the road that encircles the entire island along them. This road is only 70 miles long, but it may take you several hours to traverse it due to the predominantly low speeds of drivers in the area. There’s also plenty to see inland while visiting Tahiti, including the staggeringly tall Mount Aorai and the gorgeous Papenoo Valley. Hello Tahiti!!! The one place that we were so excited to get to on this itinerary. After 6 days at sea, we finally reach land and stop off at the capital - Papeete. We take a bus tour right around the island and see some amazing sights. We then move over to Moorea to snorkel all day but that didn't go to plan at all. Finally, Raiatea was our last stop in Tahiti but the weather made us abort that port stop. Unfortunately not everything goes to plan when on tour. Enjoy this special part of the world.

Papeete is often a quick stopover for travelers heading to Bora Bora or other islands in French Polynesia, but did you know there's a LOT to do in Tahiti? One pro tip we did learn on this latest trip, though, is not to arrive on a Sunday.
We flew into Papeete on Sunday around 6am and went straight to our downtown hotel to drop off our luggage. The famous Tahiti Pearl Market (Marché) closes at 10am on Sundays so we wanted to get there before it closed. The Market is one of the most fun places to shop in Tahiti thanks to the wide variety of jewelry, pearl qualities and fun local items.
One thing we did not take into account, though, was that no restaurants or other shops are open at all on any Sunday. So after 3 hours of browsing and racing against the clock to buy things before closing, we were starving.
Thankfully, we ended up stumbling upon our new favorite place, 3 Brasseurs, that started serving food at 11am. So with 45 minutes to go, we had a drink and relaxed.
We love Tahiti - even on a Sunday - but if you have the choice, try arriving on any other day haha!

I traveled on Air Tahiti to explore the beauty of French Polynesian islands. My flight is from Papeete to Bora Bora with a stop at Huahine. I was invited to fly in the cockpit jumpseat on Air Tahiti ATR 72-600. Our first leg from Papeete to Huahine took about 30 minutes flying at 12,000 ft. We had a clear view of Moorea on the way.
Huahine is an island located among the Society Islands. Our flight brings in locals, tourists and daily supplies. Flying time to Bora Bora was just 15 minutes, at 4,000 ft. The weather becomes clear and I can see the turquoise-blue ocean and crystal-clear lagoon. The scenery was out of this world and it was one of the most beautiful flights I’ve taken.
There are no roads and no cars at Bora Bora airport. The only transportation is by boat to the main center or hotel. My flight back to Papeete was equally scenic, we flew low over some Tahitian overwater bungalow. Aviation plays an important role in transporting travelers and cargo supplies to these islands.

The commune (municipality) of Papeete is located on the island of Tahiti, in the administrative subdivision of the Windward Islands, of which Papeete is the administrative capital. The French High Commissioner also resides in Papeete. It is the primary center of Tahitian and French Polynesian public and private governmental, commercial, industrial and financial services, the hub of French Polynesian tourism and a commonly used port of call. The Windward Islands are themselves part of the Society Islands. The name Papeete means "water from a basket".
The urban area of Papeete had a total population of 133,627 inhabitants at the August 2012 census, 25,769 of whom lived in the commune of Papeete proper.

We set sail on an ocean passage from Mazatlan, Mexico to Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas Islands. Sailing across an ocean has been a long-held dream for us, but we were not planning on extending this cruise so far from home. But, we realized that if we were serious about bluewater cruising, the time was right. We decided to take the leap and sail 2800 nautical miles across the open ocean, reaching the fabled south sea islands. Cruising the South Pacific is on the bucket list for any sailor, and completing this passage has been one of the most rewarding experiences we have ever done.
We left Mazatlan on March 23rd, and arrived at Nuku Hiva on April 16th, totalling 24 days and 9 hours at sea. We covered around 2900 nautical miles, used less than half our water and a fourth of our fuel. We motored 35 hours and each of us stood 73 four hour watches.
Julia is an Ingrid Ketch, designed by William Atkin and built in 1960. She is a traditional wooden boat, built of doug fir planking on oak frames. The length on deck is 37.5 ft and the waterline is 30 ft. She handled the open ocean brilliantly, it was obvious that this was exactly the type of sailing she was built for.

the Wilhelm Kaisen, a 44m ship operated by the German Marine Rescue. The Wilhelm Kaisen assisted the SY Anita in distress and safely brought her to a harbor in Heligoland, a small German archipelago in the North Sea, in October 1997.
