Shakespearean tragedy is the classification of drama written by William Shakespeare which has a noble protagonist, who is flawed in some way, placed in a stressful heightened situation and ends with a fatal conclusion. The plots of Shakespearean tragedy focus on the reversal of fortune of the central character(s) which leads to their ruin and ultimately, death. Shakespeare wrote several different classifications of plays throughout his career and the labeling of his plays into categories is disputed amongst different sources and scholars. There are 10 Shakespeare plays which are always classified as tragedies and several others which are disputed; there are also Shakespeare plays which fall into the classifications of comedy, history, or romance/tragicomedy that share fundamental attributes of a Shakespeare tragedy but do not wholly fit in to the category. The plays which provide the strongest fundamental examples of the genre of Shakespearean tragedy are Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, Macbeth and Antony and Cleopatra.

Professor Peter Medine Department of English This course encompasses Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar, Hamlet, Othello, Macbeth, Antony and Cleopatra, Coriolanus, and King Lear. While addressing ourselves to such matters as language and theatricality, we shall approach plays primarily from the perspectives of plot and characterization. This line of inquiry will enable us to focus on the psychology and morality of the tragic protagonists and at the same time take into account the shape of the plays' action. Thereby we shall be able to move beyond the misguided idea of the “tragic flaw” of characterization to come to terms with the philosophical, if not theological, question that all tragedy ultimately raises: the relationship between moral excellence and man's fate.

The Full Moon-Lunar Eclipse 3.22.16 is truly Shakepearean in nature, and in all honesty, it contains elements of Romantic Comedy and of Tragedy. There's all the confusion and mixed up romantic hi-jinks of The Twelfth Night" or "A MIdsummer's Night Dream," and all the overblown ambition and tragic, blind, mis-steps of King Lear or Macbeth. Key words to both: exaggerated and overblown. Prone to hysteria, error, fantastical blindness.
Macbeth: the tragedy of over ambition. One of the Shakespeare's four major tragedies, Hamlet, King Lear, Othello and Macbeth
