James Farley

James Aloysius "Jim" Farley (May 30, 1888 – June 9, 1976) was one of the first Irish Catholic politicians in American history to achieve success on a national level, serving as Chairman of the New York State Democratic Committee, Chairman of the Democratic National Committee and as Postmaster General simultaneously under the first two administrations of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. A business executive and dignitary, and a Knight of Malta, Farley was commonly referred to as a political kingmaker, and was responsible for Franklin D. Roosevelt's rise to the presidency. Farley was the campaign manager for New York State politician Alfred E. Smith's 1922 gubernatorial campaign and Franklin D. Roosevelt's 1928 and 1930 gubernatorial campaigns, as well as FDR's Presidential campaigns of 1932 and 1936. Farley predicted large landslides in both, and revolutionized the use of polling, and polling data. He was responsible for pulling together the New Deal Coalition of Catholics, labor unions, African Americans, and farmers for FDR. Farley, and the administration's patronage machine he presided over, helped to fuel the social and infrastructure programs of the New Deal. He handled most mid-level and lower-level appointments In consultation with state and local Democratic organizations.

Brian Solis

Brian Solis is a digital marketing analyst, author and speaker with expertise in social media and the sharing economy. He is a principal at Altimeter Group, a research and advisory firm and the author of several books on social media marketing. He is known for developing the Conversation Prism, “a visual map of the social media landscape,” in 2008.

Career

Solis began his career in technology marketing and public relations in 1991 at the Dodge and Mansfield agency in Ventura, California. From 1996 to 1999, he held the position of Director at The Benjamin Group, a Silicon Valley agency later acquired by Weber Shandwick. In 1999, Solis started a digital and social media marketing company called FutureWorks. In 2011, Solis joined the Altimeter Group as a principal analyst. Solis is a frequent speaker and executive producer of Pivot Conference, an annual marketing event.

Solis' blog is ranked in the Top 10 of the Ad Age Power 150. Solis authored Engage!: The Complete Guide for Brands and Businesses to Build, Cultivate, and Measure Success in the New Web, which was published in 2011. This was followed by The End of Business As Usual, later that year. In 2013, Solis published the book What's the Future of Business: Changing the Way Businesses Create Experiences.

Trademark

A trademark, trade mark, or trade-mark is a recognizable sign, design, or expression which identifies products or services of a particular source from those of others, although trademarks used to identify services are usually called service marks. The trademark owner can be an individual, business organization, or any legal entity. A trademark may be located on a package, a label, a voucher, or on the product itself. For the sake of corporate identity, trademarks are being displayed on company buildings.

Usage

A trademark identifies the brand owner of a particular product or service. Trademarks can be licensed to others; for example, Bullyland obtained a license to produce Smurf figurines; the Lego Group purchased a license from Lucasfilm in order to be allowed to launch Lego Star Wars; TT Toys Toys is a manufacturer of licensed ride-on replica cars for children. The unauthorized usage of trademarks by producing and trading counterfeit consumer goods is known as brand piracy.

The owner of a trademark may pursue legal action against trademark infringement. Most countries require formal registration of a trademark as a precondition for pursuing this type of action. The United States, Canada and other countries also recognize common law trademark rights, which means action can be taken to protect an unregistered trademark if it is in use. Still common law trademarks offer the holder in general less legal protection than registered trademarks.

Worldwide competition

One of the product categories in which global competition has been easy to track in U.S.is automotive sales. The increasing intensity of competition in global markets is a challenge facing companies at all stages of involvement in international markets. As markets open up, and become more integrated, the pace of change accelerates, technology shrinks distances between markets and reduces the scale advantages of large firms, new sources of competition emerge, and competitive pressures mount at all levels of the organization. Also, the threat of competition from companies in countries such as India, China, Malaysia, and Brazil is on the rise, as their own domestic markets are opening up to foreign competition, stimulating greater awareness of international market opportunities and of the need to be internationally competitive. Companies which previously focused on protected domestic markets are entering into markets in other countries, creating new sources of competition, often targeted to price-sensitive market segments. Not only is competition intensifying for all firms regardless of their degree of global market involvement, but the basis for competition is changing. Competition continues to be market-based and ultimately relies on delivering superior value to consumers. However, success in global markets depends on knowledge accumulation and deployment. Today, more and more marketing companies specialize in translating products from one country to another.

Plot: The story opens with the wedding of Laura Mills to Jim Farley. Jim had a story that he had tried to bury. He had done things in the past that were against the law. The young couple made haste to the depot. They had scarcely left the door-step when two detectives presented themselves at the Mills home and informed the family that they wanted Jim. The bridal couple had just been shown to their room at the big city hotel when the officers entered. Jim was arraigned for a "confidence job" pulled off six months before. Laura bad to return to her parents' home and was there confronted with the newspaper account of the crime. The parents renounced Farley, and Laura, refusing to hear a word against her husband, left the house and sought employment. She found a position in the office of Richard Starley. The work was enjoyable and Laura paid weekly visits to her husband in the jail. One evening, as she was about to leave the office, Starley attempted to embrace her. She recoiled with horror, but the next day reported as usual. Starley declared his love for her, and proposed to secure a divorce for her if she would marry him. For reply Laura produced a locket containing Jim's picture and her own and reiterated her love for her unfortunate husband. From that moment Starley became her friend. It was visiting day at the prison and Laura was there; a fire broke out in the jail and a panic ensued. Convicts, guards and visitors were rushing for safety. Among those in danger was the warden's son. Jim seized the boy, and trying to battle with the flames, was overcome. The guards rescued them both unconscious and they were taken to the hospital, where they lay in twin beds until convalescent. The warden and Starley interested themselves in Jim and for his bravery secured his release. Laura took her husband back to the family and all was forgiven,
