They were originally formed to serve as a backing group for Clyde McPhatter (of Billy Ward & the Dominoes) in 1953. According to Rolling Stone magazine, the Drifters were the least stable of the great vocal groups, as they were low-paid musicians hired by George Treadwell, who owned the Drifters name. There have been 60 vocalists in the history of the Treadwell Drifters line, including several splinter groups by former Drifters members (not under Treadwell's management). These groups are usually identified with a possessive credit such as "Bill Pinkney's Original Drifters", "Charlie Thomas' Drifters", etc. There are two notable versions of the Drifters. The firs...
Released in 1960 on the Atlantic label 2050. Ben E King on lead
Saturday Night At The Movies is a 1964 song by the fabulous Drifters. In my opinion, The Drifters were the all time greatest recording group of the 50's and 60's. In 1988 the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted the seven significant contributors to The Drifters' legacy - originals Clyde McPhatter, Bill Pinkney, and Gerhardt Thrasher, along with subsequent members Ben E. King, Charlie Thomas, Rudy Lewis, and Johnny Moore. Only King and Thomas are alive today.
Lyrics: Oh, when the sun beats down And burns the tar up on the roof And your shoes get so hot You wish your tired feet were fireproof Under the boardwalk Down by the sea, yeah On a blanket with my baby Is where I'll be (Under the boardwalk) Out of the sun (Under the boardwalk) We'll be having some fun (Under the boardwalk) People walking above (Under the boardwalk) We'll be falling in love (Under the boardwalk, boardwalk) In the park you hear The happy sound of the carousel You can almost taste the hot dogs French fries they sell Under the boardwalk Down by the sea, yeah On a blanket with my baby Is where I'll be (Under the boardwalk) Out of the sun (Under the boardwalk) We'll be having some fun (Under the boardwalk) People walking above (Under the boardwalk) We'll be falling in love...
There is no reason for a detailed presentation of The Drifters. Most of all ages know The Drifters or one of their songs. The story of the little red book was a huge hit back in 1976 and was played everywhere. This video is probably a bit special, since there actually is a picture of the little red book.

You never heard this one from me
I wanted to belong to what I fear
And we're supposed to laugh it off
We're very limited in honesty
A sense of belonging just for once in my life
I thought you were God and Elvis rolled into one
This is my life it's all I have
Repeat after me we're drifting
Repeat after me we're drifting
'Cos we know
My life is still my own
There's no connection to my past
And if it's hurting me, it's teaching me
You took your pill today for sure
You're desperate for your friends to like you more
When Kennedy spoke you'd hear America sigh
The poor seeking solace in their God that's above
We scream and we fight, it's all we have
If I were a girl and you were born as a boy
I'd know I'm still here when someone's hurting me badly
