Deutsche Bank AG (NYSE:DB) analyst Chris Whitmore wrote in a note Monday that Hewlett-Packard Co's (NYSE:HPQ) $1.2 million bid for Palm, Inc. (NASDAQ:PALM) will be "...a Herculean task given the declining momentum behind [Palm's] webOS among consumers and developers."
Whitmore also said that in order for Hewlett-Packard to reach expected gains from the merger and expand in the wireless phone market, Palm will have to generate a tripled revenue; Palm is reportedly losing revenue from attempts to increase its smartphone sales.
Whitmore wrote: "While we do see merit in H-P's strategy to extend webOS beyond the smartphone market, the investment required to tap this opportunity may be larger than expected."
Hewlett-Packard is currently developing the Slate tablet, an Apple Inc.-like iPad (NASDAQ:AAPL), and will implement Palm's webOS platform in the anticipated tablet.
Shares of the company are trading up 1.62% at $52.81, whereas Palm is trading down 0.60% at $5.78.

Hewlett-Packard said it will be able to better compete in the smartphone mobile market with Palm's webOS operating system.

Hewlett-Packard closed today trading down 1.37% at $52.55 on volume of 15,762,733, versus the average volume of 13,807,000.

Earlier today, analyst Travis McCourt said that Palm will not likely negotiate a buyout deal, citing recent regulatory filings.
Regarding the departure of Palm's software chief, Michael Abbot, McCourt wrote, "These are not activities that inspire confidence about Palm's ability or willingness to sell out at a premium valuation in the near term."
Palm is trading down 7.69% at $5.16.

Palm, Inc.
Palm, Inc. was an American company that specialized in manufacturing personal digital assistants (PDAs) and other electronics. It was the designer of the Palm Pilot, the first PDA successfully marketed worldwide, as well as the Treo 600, one of the first smartphones. Palm developed several versions of Palm OS for PDAs and smartphones. The company was also responsible for the first versions of webOS, the first multitasking operating system for smartphones, and enyo.js, a framework for HTML5 apps.
WebOS has been supported by HP, LG and the open source community. LG uses it for Smart TVs and smartwatches; Enyo is used by LG, Openbravo and many others to design iOS, Android, Windows 8, and webOS apps.
In October 2014, HP sold the Palm trademark to a shelf corporation tied to the Chinese electronics firm TCL Corporation. Shortly afterward, TCL confirmed its plans to revive the Palm brand on future, crowdsourced smartphones.
History
Palm, headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, was responsible for numerous products including the Pre and Pixi as well as the Treo and Centro smartphones. Previous product lines include the Pilot 1000, PalmPilot Pro, Palm III, Palm V, Palm VII, Zire and Tungsten. While their older devices run Palm OS Garnet, four editions of the Treo run Windows Mobile.

Plot: In a small village in West Prussia in the 1870s, Germans and Poles, Gypsies and Jews live together as neighbors. Johann, the rich owner of a large mill, does not want the Jew, Levin, to grind corn in his small boat mill. Assuming that the law is on his side since he is German, Johann opens the lock one night and washes Levin's mill away. Levin protests and the whole matter is brought to court. Due to a lack of witnesses, the judge decides in favor of Johann. Levin resigns and leaves town with his gypsy girlfriend, Marie. But Johann's life also changes for the worse. A circus comes to the town and performs a re-enactment of Johann's attack on Levin's mill. In a carnivalesque episode, circus performers and respectable villagers join together in solidarity, overcoming national differences in moral condemnation of Johann. The circus leaves, but Johann's shame remains, and he too eventually has to leave the community.

Deutsche Bank AG (NYSE:DB) analyst Chris Whitmore wrote in a note Monday that Hewlett-Packard Co's (NYSE:HPQ) $1.2 million bid for Palm, Inc. (NASDAQ:PALM) will be "...a Herculean task given the declining momentum behind [Palm's] webOS among consumers and developers."
Whitmore also said that in order for Hewlett-Packard to reach expected gains from the merger and expand in the wireless phone market, Palm will have to generate a tripled revenue; Palm is reportedly losing revenue from attempts to increase its smartphone sales.
Whitmore wrote: "While we do see merit in H-P's strategy to extend webOS beyond the smartphone market, the investment required to tap this opportunity may be larger than expected."
Hewlett-Packard is currently developing the Slate tablet, an Apple Inc.-like iPad (NASDAQ:AAPL), and will implement Palm's webOS platform in the anticipated tablet.
Shares of the company are trading up 1.62% at $52.81, whereas Palm is trading down 0.60% at $5.78.
