Alaska (i/əˈlæskə/) is a U.S. state situated in the northwest extremity of the North American continent. Bordering the state to the east are the Canadian territory of Yukon and the Canadian province of British Columbia; to the north are the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas, southern parts of the Arctic Ocean. To the west and south is the Pacific Ocean, with Russia (specifically, Chukotka Autonomous Okrug and Kamchatka Krai) farther west across the Bering Strait. Alaska is the largest state in the United States by area, the 3rd least populous and the least densely populated of the 50 United States. Approximately half of Alaska's residents (estimated at 738,432 by the Census Bureau in 2015) live within the Anchorage metropolitan area. Alaska's economy is dominated by the oil, natural gas, and fishing industries, resources which it has in abundance. Tourism and military bases are also a significant part of the economy.
Although it had been occupied for over ten thousand years by indigenous peoples, from the 18th century onward, European powers considered the territory of Alaska ripe for exploitation and trade. The United States purchased Alaska from the Russian Empire on March 30, 1867, for 7.2 million U.S. dollars at approximately two cents per acre ($4.74/km2). The area went through several administrative changes before becoming organized as a territory on May 11, 1912. It was admitted as the 49th state of the U.S. on January 3, 1959.
If you’re planning a cruise to Alaska soon, we’ve got some essential tips to help get your packing started. We’ve also added all of these items to an Alaskan shopping list, that you can find on our website, http://www.cruisetipstv.com/alaska-cruise-shopping-list/ First up; packable puffy’s. We just LOVE these Packable down jackets and vests. They're warm and cozy and compress so they take up very little space. Since dressing in layers is the way to go in Alaska, you'll want to pack a Day pack, like the (FeatherPak) to carry your outerwear layers, a bottle of water and anything you might need while ashore. Ziploc bags also come in very handy on ANY cruise. They are great for separating wet clothes, and keeping things safe and organized. A small set of Binoculars is an absolute must for Ala...
Hey cruisers, I’m Sheri with Cruise Tips TV, back with another subscriber-inspired episode. Wayne Sheng writes “we’ve booked an inside cabin for an Alaskan cruise, what are your tips to make the most of an inside cabin”? We’ve sailed twice to Alaska in inside cabins, and yes the first time was a little cramped, but we’ve learned how maximize the space since then. Here are a few tips, mostly focused on how to organize your stateroom and get the most out of limited cabin space: #1- On embarkation day, unpack and slide your luggage under your bed. It will be out of sight and out of the way for your entire cruise and won’t take up valuable closet space. #2- Use your wall space wisely by packing some super strong magnets, like these. We like to create a “grab and go” area near our front door w...
Alaska Cruise on Ruby Princess, May 2016. We booked a Mini Suite D630 located on deck 9. Our cabin was spacious, had plenty of storage space, two TVs, sofa bed, bathroom with a bathtub and a balcony. We also got a complimentary welcome champagne and our housekeeping guy was polite, helpful and professional. The new luxury Princess bed was very comfortable and we slept like a baby.
Hi Cruisers, in this short video (really just a few stills and clips) we take a look at Ketchikan and Totem Bight State Park. If you’re cruising to Alaska, chances are, you’ll be stopping in Ketchikan. Situated at the southernmost entrance to Alaska’s inside passage, there’s so much to do and see here…from walking and shopping downtown to ziplining, checking out the salmon ladder, or catching a floatplane to Misty Fjords National Monument. Our visit to Ketchikan took us to Totem Bight State Historical park, a gorgeous seaside 33 acre park showcasing 14 totem poles and a replica of a community house, or clanhouse. We chose a ship tour, which started with a brief bus ride to the park. After a short nature walk, we heard stories about many of the poles- most of them quite tragic, and lear...
We went on another Alaska cruise this summer, but this time we took Alan and Jennifer, Cheryl and Mitch, and the three grandkids. We also invited Jennifer's parents to join us, and they did, giving us a party of eleven. We headed to Seattle, boarded the Rhapsody of the Seas, and visited Juneau, Skagway, the Endicott Arm Fjord, Prince Rupert, and back to Seattle where we spent a couple of days seeing the city, visiting the space needle, a few museums, and the famous Seattle city market. This is number nine, our second day in Seattle. We went to the Space Needle area, did some kid rides, viisited the top, and stopped by for a visit to both the Science Fiction and Music museums.
Do compression bags really work? Are they good for cruising? Hi Cruisers, it’s Sheri back with another CruiseGear episode. This week we look at compression bags for cruising. Maybe you’ve seen these things that look like giant zip lock bags, and wondered if they really work. We’ll we are here to answer that question for you. First of all, there are a lot of variants, but most work in a similar manner. You pack your clothing in them, then you either vacuum or ROLL the air out. So Why would you want these as as a cruiser? It's really all about space. To a certain extent they can help you organize, but if you’re just looking to organize, packing cubes are a better choice. Alright, We’ve already said they work, but they can also be a bit of a PAIN to use. Sometimes, to get enough air out...

Hey cruisers, I’m Sheri with Cruise Tips TV. Today’s episode was inspired by one of our subscribers who asks “I’m about to sail on Princess for the first time. Any tips or hints for this line?”. Why yes, Jennifer we do! If you’ve been watching our channel for a while, you’ve probably heard us speak very fondly about Princess. There’s a lot to like, so here are some tips that should apply across most of the fleet: #1- Choose your dining experience. Most Princess ships give you the choice between anytime dining, where you choose your dining time in about a 4 hour window, or a set dining time, usually a 6pm seating and another around 8:15pm or so. You’ll want to consider this carefully and talk with your travel companions about this choice. The flexibility of anytime dining can be great, but ...
Our video of the Tracy Arm Fjord during our Alaskan cruise simply does not do justice to this amazingly beautiful part of Alaska. Until recently, only kayaks were allowed into the Tracy Arm. Now, cruise ships somehow navigate the narrow fjord to the Sawyer Glacier. The weather was so good on the day we went that the ship got closer to the glacier than it had all season! It was amazing. Watch for icebergs, seals, waterfalls, mountain striations from the former glacier and especially note the color of the water. The change from black Pacific water to this teal green water was nearly instantaneous! The fjord is part of the 30 mile long Tracy Arm - Fords Terror Wilderness region, located about 60 miles southeast of Juneau. The fjord is truly one of the most dramatic locations in Alas...

Travel video about destination Denali National Park in Alaska. Denali National Park is located about six hundred and thirty miles from the southern coast of Alaska and is nine thousand six hundred square miles of original Sub-Arctic wilderness. The history of the region began millions of years ago when mighty tectonic plates collided. The force of the collision folded the granite and sedimentary rock together at a huge elevation which subsequently formed the highest mountain in North America, Mount Mckinley. The coniferous forests consist primarily of birch and fir and deciduous trees and shrubs cover the stone-based valleys. An amazing variety of bushes, herbs and flowers turn the landscape into an array of bright colour. On the thin humus above the permafrost soil there’s vegetation ...

It's not a short video, or a short drive, but I think you'll enjoy cruising along Alaska's Denali Highway (Route 8) from Paxson to Cantwell, Alaska. This video takes you westbound, and yes, there is some rain, but don't get discouraged. Just fast-forward a bit and you'll find sunshine. Or watch the eastbound version for fewer raindrops on the lens. MyDrivelapse.com and Takemytrip.com provide driving videos and stories to help you plan your trip.
