User-generated content (UGC) is defined as "any form of content such as blogs, wikis, discussion forums, posts, chats, tweets, podcasts, digital images, video, audio files, advertisements and other forms of media that was created by users of an online system or service, often made available via social media websites". It entered mainstream usage during 2005, having arisen in web publishing and new media content production circles. It is used for a wide range of applications, including problem processing, news, gossip and research and reflects the expansion of media production through new technologies that are accessible and affordable to the general public. Additionally, user-generated content may also employ a combination of open source, free software, and flexible licensing or related agreements to further reduce the barriers to collaboration, skill-building and discovery ("'UGC'") has also gained in popularity over the last decade, as userbases have grown on social media and content-based sharing sites.
Jimmy Donal "Jimbo" Wales (/ˈdʒɪmi ˈdoʊnəl ˈweɪlz/; born August 7, 1966) is an American Internet entrepreneur. He is the co-founder and promoter of the online non-profit encyclopedia Wikipedia and the for-profit Wikia web hosting company.
Wales was born in Huntsville, Alabama, where he attended Randolph School, a university-preparatory school. Later he earned bachelor's and master's degrees in finance from Auburn University and the University of Alabama, respectively.
While in graduate school, he taught at two universities, but left before completing a PhD to take a job in finance and later worked as the research director of a Chicago futures and options firm. In 1996, he and two partners founded Bomis, a male-oriented web portal featuring entertainment and adult content. The company would provide the initial funding for the peer-reviewed free encyclopedia Nupedia (2000–03) and its successor, Wikipedia.
On January 15, 2001, with Larry Sanger and others, Wales launched Wikipedia—a free, open content encyclopedia that enjoyed rapid growth and popularity; as Wikipedia's public profile grew, he became the project's promoter and spokesman. He is historically cited as a co-founder of Wikipedia, though he has disputed the "co-" designation, declaring himself the sole founder.

News outlets are using more and more footage filmed by eyewitnesses at breaking news events. With the proliferation of mobile phones with high quality cameras and easy access to the social web, citizen journalists and these 'accidental journalists' can now film and upload photos and videos in seconds. This panel explores the issues that User Generated Content (UGC) throws up for for newsrooms integrating this type of content in their output in terms of ethics, verification, copyright law and vicarious trauma. Caroline Bannock and Fergus Bell work with UGC on a daily basis because of their roles at the Guardian and the AP, and Claire Wardle will be annoucing new findings from an ongoing research project on UGC funded by the Tow Center.
The Ethics of User-Generated Content in Political and Commercial Strategic Communication Campaigns Dec. 5, 2011 Political organizations and commercial firms are increasingly using social media and user-generated content to promote their causes, candidates and products. UNC School of Media and Journalism professors Daniel Kreiss and Daren C. Brabham discuss how these strategic actors disseminate content that appears to be user-generated, create undisclosed partnerships with blogs and other new media outlets, and profit from the appropriation of voluntarily-produced cultural content. They argue that these practices are increasingly part of the strategic communications landscape across many domains of social activity, and raise troubling ethical issues with respect to the transparency of pol...

If you're working in community or social you probably don't need to be convinced that user generated content is a good thing. After all: 54% of adult internet users post original photos or videos online that they themselves have created. [PewResearch, 2013] Over half (51%) of Americans trust user-generated content more than other information on a company website. [Bazaar Voice, 2012] So what does an opportunity to run a user generated campaign look like? How do you encourage those early entries? Who's doing a fantastic job bringing user generated content into their community? If you're in e-commerce, I put together a few of my favorite examples of companies who understand how to involve a community through UGC: http://www.slideshare.net/SherrieRohde/building-communities-in-ecommerce. +...
