Mukul Rohatgi is a designated senior counsel, and the 14th and current Attorney General of India. He was appointed Attorney General of India with effect from 12 June 2014 and shall have a tenure of 3 years. He is a senior advocate at the Supreme Court of India. He has also served earlier as Additional Solicitor General of India.
Rohatgi, son of former Delhi High Court judge Justice Awadh Behari Rohatgi, has represented Gujarat government in the Supreme Court in the 2002 Gujarat riots and fake encounter death cases, including the Best Bakery and Zahira Sheikh cases.
Rohatagi completed his studies of law from the University of Mumbai.
After graduating in law, he started practice under Yogesh Kumar Sabharwal, who later became 36th Chief Justice of India. He started working with him in the High Court and later started his own legal practice. He was designated as a senior counsel by the Delhi High Court on 3 June 1993. In 1999, he was appointed as Additional Solicitor General of India for the Vajpayee government, an appointment that saw him shift base to the Supreme Court.
In most common law jurisdictions, the attorney general or attorney-general is the main legal advisor to the government, and in some jurisdictions they may also have executive responsibility for law enforcement, prosecutions or even responsibility for legal affairs generally. In practice, the extent to which the attorney-general personally provides legal advice to the government varies between jurisdictions, and even between individual office-holders within the same jurisdiction, often depending on the level and nature of the office-holder's prior legal experience.
The term was originally used to refer to any person who holds a general power of attorney to represent a principal in all matters. In the common law tradition, anyone who represents the state, especially in criminal prosecutions, is such an attorney. Although a government may designate some official as the permanent attorney general, anyone who comes to represent the state in the same way may, in the past, be referred to as such, even if only for a particular case. Today, however, in most jurisdictions the term is largely reserved as a title of the permanently appointed attorney general of the state, sovereign or other member of the royal family. The term is pluralized attorneys general or attorneys-general.
A supreme court is the highest court within the hierarchy of many legal jurisdictions. Other descriptions for such courts include court of last resort, instance court, judgment court, apex court, and highest court of appeal. Broadly speaking, the decisions of a supreme court are not subject to further review by any other court. Supreme courts typically function primarily as appellate courts, hearing appeals from decisions of lower trial courts, or from intermediate-level appellate courts.
However, not all highest courts are named as such. Civil law states do not tend to have singular highest courts. Additionally, the highest court in some jurisdictions is not named the "Supreme Court", for example, the High Court of Australia; this is because decisions by the High Court could formerly be appealed to the Privy Council. On the other hand, in some places the court named the "Supreme Court" is not in fact the highest court; examples include the New York Supreme Court, the Supreme Courts of several Canadian provinces/territories and the former Supreme Court of Judicature of England and Wales, which are all superseded by higher Courts of Appeal.

Mukul Rohatgi said that he has no doubt that the National Judicial Appointment's Commission (NJAC) was a "flawed judgement". He also said that nowhere in the world do judges appoint judges, he adds that the Constitution of India envisages that Judges should be appointed to the apex court in consultation of the government, but currently Judiciary is giving "direction" to the government to appoint judges, which the government is forced to "concur" with. Mukul Rohatgi may no longer be in the hot seat as top government lawyer in the country, but is satisfied with his efforts after the verdict in the triple talaq case yesterday. Mincing no words, the former Attorney General says that "this kind of triple talaq is not sanctioned by the Quran. It is like saying that I don't like a cold drink so I just chuck it." Mr Rohatgi is equally candid in his assessment of the Chief Justice's minority opinion along with Justice Abdul Nazeer, saying he thinks it is completely flawed.
