Penang Hill is a hill resort comprising a group of peaks in Penang, Malaysia. It is located in Air Itam, which is 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) from the city centre of George Town. Penang Hill is also known by the Malay name Bukit Bendera, which refers to Flagstaff Hill, the most developed peak. The name Penang Hill covers a number of hills, with the highest point at Western Hill which is 833 metres (2,733 ft) above sea level. The hill stands out prominently from the lowlands as a hilly and forested area. It was used as a retreat during the British colonial period, and is now a popular tourist destination of Penang. The top of the hill is accessible via the Penang Hill Railway from its base station at Air Itam.
Captain Francis Light, founder of the colony in Penang, first plotted a horse track from the Penang Botanic Gardens waterfall up to the top of the hill in 1788. He cleared an area in order to grow strawberry, which was therefore known as Strawberry Hill. Its official name however was Flagstaff Hill, which is still reflected in its name in Malay, Bukit Bendera (literally "Flag Hill"). The name was a reference to the flagstaff outside "Bel Retiro", which was the residence of the Governor of Penang built by Francis Light c. 1789. The area is however widely known as Penang Hill which in fact covers a number of hills, and the other names such as Flagstaff Hill, Strawberry Hill are still used for peaks in the area. The hill became a cool retreat for the British colonists from the heat of the lowlands and threat of malaria, and many bungalows were built on the summit of Penang Hill for government servants and army. A Convalescent Bungalow was built in 1803.
Penang is a state in Malaysia located on the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia, by the Strait of Malacca.
Penang state is bordered by Kedah in the north and east, and Perak in the south. It is composed of two parts — Penang Island, where the seat of government is, and Seberang Perai (formerly Province Wellesley in English) on the Malay Peninsula.
Highly urbanised and industrialised, Penang is one of the most developed and economically important states in the country, as well as a thriving tourist destination. Penang has the third-highest Human Development Index in Malaysia, after the state of Selangor and the federal territory of Kuala Lumpur. Its heterogeneous population is highly diverse in ethnicity, culture, language and religion. A resident of Penang is colloquially known as a Penangite (in English),Penang lang (in the local Penang Hokkien dialect) or a Penangkaran (In Tamil)
The name of "Penang" comes from the modern Malay name Pulau Pinang, which means "island of the areca nut palm" (Areca catechu, family Palmae). The name Penang may refer either to the island of Penang (Pulau Pinang) or the state of Penang (Negeri Pulau Pinang). In Malay, Penang's capital George Town was called and labelled in old maps as Tanjung Penaga (Cape Penaigre), named after the many ballnut trees (also known as Alexandrian laurels, Calophyllum inophyllum) on the coast, but now usually shortened as Tanjung (the Cape).

The 5 minute train ride from street level to an altitude of about 740m up the forrested hillside of Penang Hill. Quite an amazing train ride, the speed going up beats the Peak Tram Hong Kong. In the distance peninsular Malaysia seen across the waterway and the new bridge under construction.
All we ever hear about Penang was EATING! Much to our surprise there was a lot more to do in Penang than just eat until you pop. Walking through the quaint streets of Georgetown was an adventure in itself. Penang is definitely a way different vibe compared to Kuala Lumpur. I got way more of a typical South East Asian city vibe out of Penang, and by that I mean, the smells, dirty streets, critters etc.. However, this didn't detract from an excellent experience of the city. The first thing we did was rent a motorbike and get a lay of the land. Aside from the beaches (which were nowhere near as nice as Langkawi: watch our video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqjZrlsQzBQ) most action in Penang takes place in and around Georgetown. Georgetown has famous street art scattered through t...
Follow my travels - https://www.youtube.com/user/JayandAshleyVlogBack Travel Vlog 61 - February 2015 I bought coach tickets to Penang for 50RM, which was quite expensive because of the Chinese New Year. Penang is an island to the North of Malaysia and was much more laid back than KL. However, I suffered from terrible food poisoning which made for a tough 6 hour journey on the coach and the need to recover in my flashpacker hostel (Ryokan). When I recovered, I got the bus to Penang Hill, on advice from fellow roommate, Jun. MUSIC - So High remix - Van She

It's also the name of the Malaysian state which is made up of Penang Island and the facing strip of territory on the mainland called Seberang Perai (formerly Province Wellesley). Penang's beaches are nice, though a little lacklustre when compared to those in some other Malaysian states, but this is more than compensated for by the island's rich multicultural history which is full of Malay, Chinese, Indian and European influences. Penang is also well known domestically and in Singapore for being the "food paradise" of Malaysia. ...
