The Catskill Mountains, also known as the Catskills, are a large area in the southeastern portion of the U.S. state of New York. They are located approximately 100 miles (160 km) north-northwest of New York City and 40 miles (60 km) southwest of Albany, starting just west of the Hudson River. The Catskills occupy much or all of five counties (Delaware, Greene, Schoharie, Sullivan, and Ulster), with some areas falling into the boundaries of southwestern Albany, eastern Broome, northwestern Orange, and southern Otsego counties. Foothills are also found in southeastern Chenango, southern Montgomery, northern Otsego, and western Schenectady counties. As a cultural and geographic region, the Catskills are generally defined as those areas close to or within the borders of the Catskill Park, a 700,000-acre (2,800 km2) forest preserve protected from many forms of development under New York state law.
Geologically, the Catskills are a mature dissected plateau, a once-flat region subsequently uplifted and eroded into sharp relief by watercourses. The Catskills form the northeastern end of, and highest-elevation portion of, the Allegheny Plateau (also known as the Appalachian Plateau). Although the Catskills are sometimes compared with the Adirondack Mountains further north, the two mountain ranges are not geologically related, as the Adirondacks are a continuation of the Canadian Shield. Similarly, the Shawangunk Ridge, which forms the southeastern edge of the Catskills, is part of the geologically distinct Ridge-and-Valley province, and is a continuation of the same ridge known as Kittatinny Mountain in New Jersey and Blue Mountain in Pennsylvania.

Road trip with Jenn and Jess in the Catskill Mountains in upstate New York in the fall of 2015. The foliage was amazing, beautiful colors! It was a joy to ride our Mustang through these mountains and do some hiking. Again the Biebz was the go-to music. Enjoy this short movie of the road trip.
Exploring New York's Catskill Mountains and setting up my Hennessy Hammock for it's first test in the wild. Hennessy model is the "Expedition A-Sym". A detailed gear list is at the bottom of this description. This was two day, one night, "out and back" hike, covering a total distance of 24 miles in the Slide Mountain Wilderness Area. The individual trails hiked on this trip are actually a part of the New York Long Path, a 347 mile trail beginning at the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee, New Jersey and ending in Altamont, New York, in the Albany area. We'll be visiting 3 peaks on this over-nighter: Peekamoose Mt, Table Mt, and Slide Mt. (Slide mountain is the Catskill's highest peak, at an elevation of 4,180 feet.) Parking Location and Trailhead Coodinates: 41.915164, -74.429080...
Overlook Mountain; Woodstock, NY July 27, 2014 We were back in the Catskill hiking the Escarpment Trail from Platt Clove to Overlook Mountain. It has been awhile since we visited and walked the Catskill Mountains and we wanted to get back before the entire summer had past. The hike started in the Platte Clove Preserve at the top of Platte clove. Once past the falls we walked through beautiful pine stands and informational kiosk. The trail was rocky and difficult but with a slight grade the hiking was very pleasant. We followed the trail past The Devils Path and the Platt Clove Lean-to. We then took a rest at Codfish Point. Codfish Point is wonderful viewpoint of the Hudson Valley. It is an old blue stone quarry that still has structures built in the days of its use. The foundations of...
Connect With Me: Twitter: https://twitter.com/easternhikers This hike takes place in Catskill Mountains, and ultimately reaches the summit of Slide Mountain, the highest point in the Catskills. This trail is long (14 miles) and strenuous. The AMC Catskill Mountain guide book refers to it as difficult. Starting at the parking area of the Woodland Valley Campgrounds you will follow the red trail markers across Woodland Valley Road, through the campsite and across the Esopus River. The Trail begins steeply to the Registration Log. From here the trail eases a bit and you will find nice views along the ledges that the trail skirts. At 2.6 miles you will reach the Terrace Lean-to junction. Turning right, the trail quickly becomes more challenging as your hands become a necessity for sc...

First occupied by native Americans more than 5000 years ago, The Catskill mountains an extension of the application mountains all the way into Upstate New York. Exploring the haunting lands of Rip Van Winkle will leave you lost in time. This is Americas First Wilderness Join me as I venture into The Catskill Mountains As daylight breaks, I am reminded of the Buddhist monks that have sought these serene mountains for years as a place of meditation. And then I grab my gear and head to the Trails. Kaaterskill Clove is home to a series of captivating waterfalls. The first of these, only .2 miles in, is Bastion Falls. Rising a total of 80 feet, this falls is but an enchanting prelude to the dramatic cascade that lies deeper within the forested Catskills. The Trail to Kaaterskill falls is...

The 24 mile Devils Path in the Catskill Mountains is one of the most challenging hikes on the east coast. In this video I discuss the gear that I brought along for the adventure. Having the right gear will always help in having a successful hike.
Devils Path is one of the most rugged trails in the northeast. This is our first scouting mission of the trail with the hope of one day completing the entire 25 or so miles. We explored about 7 miles of the devils path with other trails also in our hike. Explored Devils Path? We want to hear from you! Is it that difficult or are there other trails that put it to shame.
