I told my girlfriend Jennifer I was taking her to dinner, but before we ate I wanted to go to the Museum of Contemporary Photography to see a photo exhibit that was ending that day.
I had arranged with the museum to have her favorite picture of us hung in their gallery ( You can see the picture around 7:13.) and for a flash mob to dance to one of her favorite songs, Peter Gabriel's "The Book of Love."
She had no idea what was happening until the very end.
Thanks to Winifred Haun and the Winifred Haun Dancers for such an amazing performance and thanks to the Museum of Contemporary Photography for the use of your space!

Watts Chapel (2015) for solo guitar, a film by Luca Sage

Michael Partington - guitar
Watts Chapel is named after the Arts and Crafts memorial chapel built by Mary Watts in commemoration of her husband, the artist GF Watts. The chapel is situated close to my home in Surrey, England, and offers passers-by the opportunity for reflection and quiet contemplation.
My piece draws on the music of Gustav Mahler written around the time the chapel was built – specifically, fragments of the 3rd and 9th Symphonies, and the song Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen (I am lost to the world), from Rückert-Lieder. The Mahler references concern remembrance and the transience of mortality. My music is slow and spacious; it attempts to evoke the peaceful atmosphere of Watts Chapel.
The piece was commissioned by Michael Partington who gave the first performances in the US and the UK in the early part of 2016. This film was shot in August 2016, by kind permission of Watts Gallery Trust and Compton Parish Council.

Chapel of Love
"Chapel of Love" is a song written by Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich and Phil Spector, and made famous by The Dixie Cups in 1964, spending three weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The song tells of the happiness and excitement the narrator feels on her wedding day, for she and her love are going to the "chapel of love", and "we'll never be lonely anymore." Many other artists have recorded the song.
It was originally recorded by the Blossoms in April 1963 but was never released. The Dixie Cups' version was the debut release of the new Red Bird Records run by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller along with George Goldner.The Ronettes included the song on their debut album released in November 1964 with production by Phil Spector. In 1973, singer and actress Bette Midler had a moderate hit with a cover of "Chapel of Love".
The Dixie Cups version
Background
The definitive version of "Chapel of Love" was recorded by The Dixie Cups and released as a single in April 1964. Sung by Barbara Ann Hawkins, Rosa Lee Hawkins, and Joan Marie Johnson, this version was the group's first single taken from their debut studio album Chapel of Love issued on Red Bird Records. The song was arranged by Joe Jones and produced by Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller, Ellie Greenwich, and Jeff Barry. It charted at number one in early June 1964 on the Billboard Hot 100 knocking The Beatles out of the number one spot and remained at the top for three weeks. The song also peaked at number 22 on the UK Singles Chart and hit number one in Canada on the RPM Chart. The "Chapel of Love" version by The Dixie Cups sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. The song was later included on the soundtrack to films ranging from Full Metal Jacket to Father of the Bride. The hit single recorded by The Dixie Cups was ranked #279 on Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, being the group's only song on the list.

Chapel
A chapel is a religious place of fellowship, prayer and worship that is attached to a larger, often nonreligious institution or that is considered an extension of a primary religious institution. It may be part of a larger structure or complex, such as a college, hospital, palace, prison, funeral home, church, synagogue or mosque, located on board a military or commercial ship, or it may be an entirely free-standing building, sometimes with its own grounds. Many military installations have chapels for the use of military personnel, normally under the leadership of a military chaplain.
Until the Protestant Reformation, a chapel denoted a place of worship that was either at a secondary location that was not the main responsibility of the local parish priest, or that belonged to a person or institution. This show presents Abrams' latest efforts and bares testament to his continued practice and mastery in the pursuit of his unique visionary abstraction. A brief sneak peek of Alex Grey's Chapel of Sacred Mirrors is thrown in for good measure.

Flash Mob Proposal to Peter Gabriel's The Book of Love
I told my girlfriend Jennifer I was taking her to dinner, but before we ate I wanted to go to the Museum of Contemporary Photography to see a photo exhibit that was ending that day. I had arranged with the museum to have her favorite picture of us hung in their gallery ( You can see the picture around 7:13.) and for a flash mob to dance to one of her favorite songs, Peter Gabriel's "The Book of Love." She had no idea what was happening until the very end. Thanks to Winifred Haun and the Winifred Haun Dancers for such an amazing performance and thanks to the Museum of Contemporary Photography for the use of your space! Solsbury Hill and The Book of Love are both used with permission.

The chapel is situated close to my home in Surrey, England, and offers passers-by the opportunity for reflection and quiet contemplation. I told my girlfriend Jennifer I was taking her to dinner, but before we ate I wanted to go to the Museum of Contemporary Photography to see a photo exhibit that was ending that day.

I told my girlfriend Jennifer I was taking her to dinner, but before we ate I wanted to go to the Museum of Contemporary Photography to see a photo exhibit that was ending that day.
I had arranged with the museum to have her favorite picture of us hung in their gallery ( You can see the picture around 7:13.) and for a flash mob to dance to one of her favorite songs, Peter Gabriel's "The Book of Love."
She had no idea what was happening until the very end.

Watts Chapel (2015) for solo guitar, a film by Luca Sage
filmed in Watts Chapel, Compton, Surrey, UK
Michael Partington - guitar
Watts Chapel is named after the Arts and Crafts memorial chapel built by Mary Watts in commemoration of her husband, the artist GF Watts. The chapel is situated close to my home in Surrey, England, and offers passers-by the opportunity for reflection and quiet contemplation.
My piece draws on the music of Gustav Mahler written around the time the chapel was built – specifically, fragments of the 3rd and 9th Symphonies, and the song Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen (I am lost to the world), from Rückert-Lieder. The Mahler references concern remembrance and the transience of mortality. My music is slow and spacious; it attempts to evoke the peaceful atmosphere of Watts Chapel.
The piece was commissioned by Michael Partington who gave the first performances in the US and the UK in the early part of 2016. This film was shot in August 2016, by kind permission of Watts Gallery Trust and Compton Parish Council.
