Christiana Figueres, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, addressed the World Health Assembly today. She stressed the links between climate change and health, including those related to the spread of vector-borne diseases. Her address was followed by a technical briefing that underscored the need for multisectoral action in order to achieve the health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and agreement on a new resolution on meeting those goals.

Ms Gates then highlighted ways to improve the health of mothers and newborn babies, emphasizing the value of linking efforts to improve reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health -- "the continuum of care".
She pointed out that: "If women can plan their families, they are more likely to space their pregnancies. If they space their pregnancies, they are more likely to have healthy babies. If women's babies are healthy, they are more likely to flourish as children. When mothers have healthy pregnancies, and when children thrive, the positive benefits last a lifetime."
She also called on delegates to pay more attention to newborn babies. Although there has been remarkable global progress in reducing the number of children dying before their fifth birthdays, neonatal mortality rates have declined at a slower pace. The Health Assembly will discuss a new action plan for newborns later this week. Ms Gates and other panellists at today's technical briefing discussed quality of care around childbirth and its potential to end preventable deaths of mothers and newborn babies and stillbirths, generating a "triple return on investment".

STORYLINE
Taiwan's health minister on Tuesday said Taiwan is seeking "more meaningful participation" in the World Health Organisation (WHO).
Yaung Chih-liang's comments came as he addressed the 63rd session of the World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva.
Taiwan joined the governing forum of the World Health Organisation as an observer with the approval of Beijing in 2009.
"Our participation in the WHO not only helps strengthen the global network for epidemic prevention but also allows more countries to benefit from Taiwan's advanced medical capabilities," Yaung said.
He said Taiwan had gained a lot from participating in the WHO, particularly during the H1N1 pandemic.
The 193 member countries of the WHO are meeting from 17 to 21 May to review their activities and set out future priorities, the organisation said.
Taiwan is attending the meeting under the name Chinese Taipei - the name used by Taiwan to participate in some international organisations and most sporting events.
China objects to the use of the term "Taiwan" or its official title "Republic of China", because it implies a separate entity from the mainland China.
China and Taiwan split amid civil war in 1949.
Beijing still claims the island as part of its territory.

Melinda Gates
Melinda Ann Gates (née French; born August 15, 1964) is an American businesswoman and philanthropist.
She is the wife of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, and the co-founder of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. She worked at Microsoft, where she was project manager for Microsoft Bob, Microsoft Encarta and Expedia.
Early life and education
Melinda Ann French was born on August 15, 1964 in Dallas, Texas. She is the second of four children to Raymond Joseph French Jr., an aerospace engineer, and Elaine Agnes Amerland, a homemaker. French has an older sister and two younger brothers.
French, a Roman Catholic, attended St. Monica Catholic School, where she was the top student in her class year. French graduated as valedictorian from Ursuline Academy of Dallas in 1982. She earned a bachelor's degree in computer science and economics from Duke University in 1986 and an MBA from Duke's Fuqua School of Business in 1987. At Duke, French was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, Beta Rho Chapter.

Margaret Chan
Margaret Chan Fung Fu-chun, OBE, JP (born August 21 1947 in Hong Kong) is a Hong Kong Chinese and Canadian physician, who serves as the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) for 2006–17. Chan was elected by the Executive Board of WHO on 8 November 2006, and was endorsed in a special meeting of the World Health Assembly on the following day. Chan has previously served as Director of Health in the Hong Kong Government (1994–2003), representative of the WHO Director-General for Pandemic Influenza and WHO Assistant Director-General for Communicable Diseases (2003–2006). As of 2014, she is ranked as the 30th most powerful woman in the world according to Forbes.
Education and employment history
Margaret Chan was initially trained as a Home Economics teacher at the Northcote College of Education in Hong Kong. She then earned her BA degree in Home Economics and her MD degree at the University of Western Ontario in 1973 and 1977, respectively, as well as her MSc (Public Health) degree at the National University of Singapore in 1985. Chan completed the Program for Management Development (PMD 61) at Harvard Business School in 1991. In 1997, she was given the distinction for the Fellowship of the Faculty of Public Health Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom and was also appointed as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II.

STORYLINE
Taiwan's health minister on Tuesday said Taiwan is seeking "more meaningful participation" in the World Health Organisation (WHO).
Yaung Chih-liang's comments came as he addressed the 63rd session of the World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva.
Taiwan joined the governing forum of the World Health Organisation as an observer with the approval of Beijing in 2009.
"Our participation in the WHO not only helps strengthen the global network for epidemic prevention but also allows more countries to benefit from Taiwan's advanced medical capabilities," Yaung said.
He said Taiwan had gained a lot from participating in the WHO, particularly during the H1N1 pandemic.
The 193 member countries of the WHO are meeting from 17 to 21 May to review their activities and set out future priorities, the organisation said.
Taiwan is attending the meeting under the name Chinese Taipei - the name used by Taiwan to participate in some international organisations and most sporting events.
China objects to the use of the term "Taiwan" or its official title "Republic of China", because it implies a separate entity from the mainland China.
China and Taiwan split amid civil war in 1949.
Beijing still claims the island as part of its territory.
