For nearly a decade, with support from the National Science Foundation (NSF), Doppler on Wheels (DOW) has been doing its best work in dangerous weather, driving into the eye of the storm to gather scientific data about wind, rain and snow that are missed by stationary radar systems. Meteorologist Josh Wurman and his team at the Center for Severe Weather Research in Boulder, Colo., can coordinate a fleet of storm-chasing vehicles from a compact control room inside one of the DOW trucks. From thunderstorms to blizzards, hurricanes to tornadoes, DOW is providing extensive and detailed information that may ultimately improve warning systems and weather prediction. The research in this episode was funded by NSF award #0734001, Doppler On Wheels Mobile Radar Network. NSF Grant: Grant #/URL: h...
National Science Foundation-funded anthropologists and paleontologists uncovered what could be the largest single collection of lemur remains ever found. What’s more, they found it in a most unusual place--hidden in a series of underwater caves in a remote desert region of Madagascar. Described as a lemur graveyard, the discovery of hundreds of potentially thousand-year old skeletons make it one of the most unique sites in the world. The finding, reported in this video, could be important for understanding human relatives and other animals and result in a totally new era for underwater paleontology.
An NSF-funded research team lead by the Florida Institute of Technology or FIT, has documented for the first time, a population of King Crabs that has migrated to shallower, warming seas off the Antarctic Peninsula. The team believes this predator could potentially threaten an Antarctic ecosystem that has been crab free for millions of years. NSF release: http://1.usa.gov/1YLYrUQ
Jane Margolis is an educator and researcher at UCLA, who has dedicated her career to democratizing computer science education and addressing under-representation in the field. Her work inspires students from diverse backgrounds to study computer science and to use their knowledge to help society. With support from the National Science Foundation (NSF), Margolis and her team investigated why so few girls and under-represented minorities are learning computer science. They developed "Exploring Computer Science," or ECS, to reverse the trend. ECS is tailored to spark the interest of all kids, but especially a diverse mix of kids living in low income areas, by encouraging the students to explore through hands-on learning projects and to collaborate to solve problems. Margolis says getting kids...

Ncses asked the Committee on National Statistics and the Computer Science and Telecommunications Board of the National Research Council to form a panel to review the Ncses communication and dissemination program that is concerned with the collection and distribution of...
Tease: This technology would enable communities to produce their own water filters using biomass nanofibers, making clean water more accessible and affordable Description: The world's population is projected to increase by 2-3 billion over the next 40 years. Already, more than three quarters of a billion people lack access to clean drinking water and 85 percent live in the driest areas of the planet. Those statistics are inspiring chemist Ben Hsiao and his team at Stony Brook University. With support from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the team is hard at work designing nanometer-scale water filters that could soon make clean drinking water available and affordable for even the poorest of the poor. Traditional water filters are made of polymer membranes with tiny pores to filter ...

Read your free e-book: http://hotaudiobook.com/mebk/50/en/B01L2GOSZ8/book Advanced computing capabilities are used to tackle a rapidly growing range of challenging science and engineering problems, many of which are computeand data-intensive as well. Demand for advanced computing has been growing for all types and capabilities of systems, from large numbers of single commodity nodes to jobs requiring thousands of cores; for systems with fast interconnects; for systems with excellent data handling and management; and for an increasingly diverse set of applications that includes data analytics as well as modeling and simulation. Since the advent of its supercomputing centers, the National Science Foundation (nsf) has provided its researchers with state-of-the-art computing systems. The growt...
NYU Meyers Professor Winslow Burleson presenting at NYC Media Lab 2016. Burleson announces the NSF grant and matching NYU funding for the multi-disciplinary collaborative 5-year project. http://bit.ly/2d54fVP The NYU Holodeck will be developed as a well-integrated software/hardware instrument incorporating visual, audio, and physical (haptics, objects, real-time fabrication) components, providing a compelling opportunity to explore and advance new types of science, permitting researchers from diverse disciplines to interact with theoretical models, real objects, robots, and agents, engendering insights that may not be possible using current 2-D and 3-D representations and analytic techniques.
This morning leaders of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) announced the first direct detection of gravitational waves. In honor of this momentous discovery, the Perimeter Institute in Waterloo, Ontario, is hosting a live webcast today at 1pm EST: “Ripple Effects: A Forum on Gravitational Waves.” Video courtesy of National Science Foundation. Dr. Sapochak discusses the Vision, the Goal, of the US National Science Foundation. The NSF is an Independent Federal Agency established in 1950 following a historic recommendation that “the US Government should accept new responsibilities for promoting the flow of scientific knowledge and the development of scientific talent in our youth.” In its 65 years of existence the agency has grown to become one of the main sources of funding to the US academic community in the US and fostering international collaboration across the world. The agency accepts about 45,000 proposals annually and disburses about $7billion of award through it’s a diverse funding mode. This presentation will discuss these funding modes together with opportunities for international engagement.
This webinar will give an overview of the National Science Foundation, or NSF, website. The two main areas covered will be (1) accessing NSF-sponsored statistics and (2) understanding the NSF’s grantmaking structure. The NSF is the main government unit funding and studying the nation’s science and technology development. The NSF collects and disseminates statistical data on state science and technology indicators and science and engineering research in higher education. And, have you seen those notes that say “Funded in part by the NSF” or something similar? That’s the National Science Foundation at work. They are the largest U. S. federal agency that funds research on all science and technology except for human health. Any campus with faculty in the research sciences (chemistry, physics, ...
