1948 (MCMXLVIII) was a leap year starting on Thursday (dominical letter DC) of the Gregorian calendar, the 1948th year of the Common Era (CE) and Anno Domini (AD) designations, the 948th year of the 2nd millennium, the 48th year of the 20th century, and the 9th year of the 1940s decade.
Arturo Toscanini (Italian: [arˈtuːro toskaˈniːni]; March 25, 1867 – January 16, 1957) was an Italian conductor. He was one of the most acclaimed musicians of the late 19th and of the 20th century, renowned for his intensity, his perfectionism, his ear for orchestral detail and sonority, and his photographic memory. He was at various times the music director of La Scala Milan, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Later in his career he was appointed the first music director of the NBC Symphony Orchestra (1937–54), and this led to his becoming a household name (especially in the United States) through his radio and television broadcasts and many recordings of the operatic and symphonic repertoire.
Marilyn Monroe (born Norma Jeane Mortenson, June 1, 1926 – August 5, 1962) was an American actress and model. Famous for playing "dumb blonde" characters, she became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s, emblematic of the era's attitudes towards sexuality. Although she was a top-billed actress for only a decade, her films grossed $200 million by the time of her unexpected death in 1962. She continues to be considered a major popular culture icon.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Monroe spent most of her childhood in foster homes and an orphanage and married for the first time at the age of sixteen. While working in a factory as part of the war effort in 1944, she met a photographer and began a successful pin-up modeling career. The work led to two short-lived film contracts with Twentieth Century-Fox (1946–47) and Columbia Pictures (1948). After a series of minor film roles, she signed a new contract with Fox in 1951. Over the next two years, she became a popular actress with roles in several comedies, including As Young as You Feel and Monkey Business, and in the dramas Clash by Night and Don't Bother to Knock. Monroe faced a scandal when it was revealed that she had posed for nude photos before becoming a star, but rather than damaging her career, the story increased interest in her films.

New Delhi, Aug 31 (ANI): For decades Pakistan has portrayed India as the country that has not abided by the UN Security Council Resolution 47 of April 1948. But in reality, Pakistan had rejected the UN resolution, the very resolution it swears by now. It never wanted that plebiscite or self determination be exercised by Kashmiris, just as Mohammed Ali Jinnahhad had earlier rejected Lord Mountbatten's suggestion in November 1947 for a plebiscite in the state. Pakistan was to be given no role in this since Maharaja Hari Singh had already acceded to India under the terms of the Independence Act. Ever since then, Pakistan has violated the norms by not just stationing troops in the areas illegally, but signed deals with China with respect to territory that belongs to Jammu and Kashmir. The res...

1948 - Marilyn first met Natasha Lytess in March/April 1948, she was Columbia’s head drama coach at the time. Columbia’s head of talent, Max Arnow, along with Ladies of the Chorus Produces Harry Romm, asked Natasha to work with Marilyn. Natasha worked with Marilyn for seven years, until the completion of The Seven Year Itch (1955) shooting. She took Marilyn seriously as an actress at the time when no one else did. She told the press: “There’s more to Marilyn than meets the eye. The trouble is that when people look at her they immediately figure there’ s typical Hollywood Blonde. It’s not their fault though. Marilyn’s soul just doesn’t fit her body”. So strong was Natasha’s belief in her pupil that, when Marilyn was signed for the Asphalt Jungle in 1950, Lytess quit her job so that she coul...
Our Miss Brooks is an American situation comedy starring Eve Arden as a sardonic high school English teacher. It began as a radio show broadcast on CBS from 1948 to 1957. When the show was adapted to television (1952–56), it became one of the medium's earliest hits. In 1956, the sitcom was adapted for big screen in the film of the same name. The show was a hit on radio from the outset; within eight months of its launch as a regular series, the show landed several honors, including four, for Eve Arden, who won polls in four individual publications of the time. Arden had actually been the third choice to play the title role. Harry Ackerman, at the time CBS's West Coast director of programming, wanted Shirley Booth for the part, but as he told historian Gerald Nachman many years later, he rea...

The Berlin Blockade (1 April 1948 – 12 May 1949) was one of the first major international crises of the Cold War. During the multinational occupation of post–World War II Germany, the Soviet Union blocked the Western Allies' railway, road, and canal access to the sectors of Berlin under Western control. The Soviets offered to drop the blockade if the Western Allies withdrew the newly introduced Deutschmark from West Berlin. In response, the Western Allies organized the Berlin airlift to carry supplies to the people of West Berlin, a difficult feat given the city's population.[1][2] Aircrews from the United States Air Force, the British Royal Air Force, the Royal Canadian Air Force, the Royal Australian Air Force, the Royal New Zealand Air Force, and the South African Air Force[3]:338 flew ...

The Diary of Fate is a fun series for a number of reasons. It has a heavy handed host who plays fate, a somewhat sinister sounding character who delights in emphasizing how he manipulates events to force life changing choices. The characters in the stories always seem to make the wrong choice, and thereby assure their ultimate demise. Perhaps it's a hit and run driver, or a jealous husband who decides to eliminate his competition, or a man who murders his way to the top of the company. Whatever the scheme, you can rest assured that the cold blooded culprit will dish it out in full heaping servings before he is forced to get a taste of his own medicine. Airing on NBC Blue Network between September 6, 1947 to May 29, 1948. Produced by Larry Finlay and Herb Lytton, Larry Finlay also directed ...
They say the sky used to be blue I don't quite believe it
It's probably always been the color that it is
And there were cotton candy clouds and birds to fly through it
Just stories we all love to tell our kids
So I'll close my electronic door and keep the cold outside
Hug my aluminium pillow so tight
And pray the radiation doesn't make me sick tonight
There used to be a wind wasn't caused by fans
I wonder how it would of felt in my hair
And the nuclear ring around the moon was caused by man
If it was then it's much to late to care
So I'll put my saftey goggles and gaze out at the sun
The artificial atmosphere machines give off a constant hum
In a world thats cold and peaceful April 2031
No more sky and no more trees
(April 2031)
No more oxygen to breathe
(April 2031)
No more hate and no more war
(April 2031)
Nothing left worth fighting for 2031
As far back as Vietnam we should of learned our lesson
But we closed our eyes and sent our son's away
And they told us we were winning as they sold more ammunition
Some were angry most just looked the other way
Ohh, nights illuminated by the endless glowing sand
That swallowed all the oceans and choked off all the land
In a world beyond resuscitation even by God's hand
No more moutains no more sea
(April 2031)
No more you and no more me
(April 2031)
No more music no more songs
(April 2031)
No God left to blame it on
(April 2031)
No more children playing April 2031
No more need for praying April 2031
No more children playing April 2031
