The Pirates of Penzance - Hold Monsters Major-General (Subtitles)

Gilbert and Sullivan's raucous operatic tale is captured in all its fun and glory in this production, recorded live at Central Park's Delacorte Theater. Kevin Kline sparkles as the swashbuckling and libidinous Pirate King while Linda Ronstadt makes her theatrical debut as the lovely and virginal Mabel. When Mabel and Frederic, a young pirate bound to serve the Pirate King, fall in love, complications arise and high spirited antics ensue. The incomparable cast offers the best in this boisterous romp.
Despite some of the technical shortcomings of the DVD I found it more rewarding than the 1983 movie. I would thoroughly recommend adding a copy of this DVD to your library.

Air Force Major general faints, collapse on desk at podium news conference. The man faints during budget talks, Washington, DC. Maj. Gen. James F. Martin Jr. was talking about the Air Force budget before fainting right at the podium.
He was taken to another room, and then later to a hospital as a precaution.
No word yet on the general's condition but he appears to be OK.

What started off as a heated argument suddenly became a moment of disgrace for everybody on The News Hour last night after Major General (Retd) G D Bakshi, a soldier who has served our nation on one single oath he took when he entered the army, broke down on National Television. While on the debate, he spoke in favour of the millions of soldiers who have given their life for India, how much the tricolour meant to him and his Jawans and how saddening it is to see a handful of people debating against this and dragging our pious National flag into a political mess.
It’s such a shame that we’ve reached a point where we have debates on whether or not our flag must be ‘allowed’ to be hoisted in universities. The panelists (against the idea of the tricolour being unfurled on every university campus) discussed where one must ‘draw the line’ between being an extreme-nationalist and a patriot. The former being people in favour of the flag hoisting i.e. As someone who isn’t really “patriotic” in the truest of sense, but emotionally connected to this country for everything that it’s made us into, I condemn the attacks on journalists and the hooliganism of some leaders, I condemn the shouting of slogans on streets that demean our country’s image, and when I say I, I speak on behalf of millions of such people who share the same emotion as I do. We detest everything that insults the flesh and blood of our soldiers that have seeped into the soil leaving behind nothing but a safer country for you and I to live in.
Smriti Irani called up the channel mid-way to reassure Major General (Retd) G D Bakshi with the best possible words that represented the millions of true patriots –
“Tragedy of my nation today, that I see tears in eyes of a brave soldier like you. We are grateful for your sacrifices and services. Under that flag everyday, knowingly, unknowingly know this we shall be grateful forever.”

Are we required to sing the Communist internaionale there instead of our National anthem? Major general
Major general (or major-general, short MG) is a military rank used in many countries. It is derived from the older rank of sergeant major general. The disappearance of the "sergeant" in the title explains the apparently confusing phenomenon whereby a lieutenant general outranks a major general. (Though a major outranks a lieutenant, a lieutenant outranks a sergeant-major.)
In the Commonwealth and United States, it is a division commander's rank subordinate to the rank of lieutenant general and senior to the rank of brigadier/brigadier general.
In some countries, including much of Eastern Europe, major general is the lowest of the general officer ranks, with no brigadier-grade rank above colonel.
In France, major general (major général) is an appointment, normally of corps general. The major general assists a chief of staff. There is one major general for the chief of staff of the armed forces as a whole, and one for each of the four armed forces chiefs (army, navy, air force and gendarmerie).

I would thoroughly recommend adding a copy of this DVD to your library.

What started off as a heated argument suddenly became a moment of disgrace for everybody on The News Hour last night after Major General (Retd) G D Bakshi, a soldier who has served our nation on one single oath he took when he entered the army, broke down on National Television. While on the debate, he spoke in favour of the millions of soldiers who have given their life for India, how much the tricolour meant to him and his Jawans and how saddening it is to see a handful of people debating against this and dragging our pious National flag into a political mess.
It’s such a shame that we’ve reached a point where we have debates on whether or not our flag must be ‘allowed’ to be hoisted in universities. The panelists (against the idea of the tricolour being unfurled on every university campus) discussed where one must ‘draw the line’ between being an extreme-nationalist and a patriot. The former being people in favour of the flag hoisting i.e. As someone who isn’t really “patriotic” in the truest of sense, but emotionally connected to this country for everything that it’s made us into, I condemn the attacks on journalists and the hooliganism of some leaders, I condemn the shouting of slogans on streets that demean our country’s image, and when I say I, I speak on behalf of millions of such people who share the same emotion as I do. We detest everything that insults the flesh and blood of our soldiers that have seeped into the soil leaving behind nothing but a safer country for you and I to live in.
Smriti Irani called up the channel mid-way to reassure Major General (Retd) G D Bakshi with the best possible words that represented the millions of true patriots –
“Tragedy of my nation today, that I see tears in eyes of a brave soldier like you. We are grateful for your sacrifices and services. Under that flag everyday, knowingly, unknowingly know this we shall be grateful forever.”
General G D Bakshi also expressed his angst on Facebook in the wee hours of the morning –

On Arnab's debate today i suddenly realised the difference between us soldiers and others. it suddenly hit me.it hurt me deeply to see what we have become. we have problems now with flying our national Flag.? I learnt with the greatest shock that so far the national flag has not been flying in our Universities? Why pray? Are they UN enclaves in Free India beyond the pale of our soveriginity? Are we required to sing the Communist internaionale there instead of our National anthem? Are the universities paid for by our taxes required to celebrate every Afzal Guru , every Maoist,celebrate every 76 brave CRPF boys who get killed by the Maoists? celebrate every single soldier who gets killed in J&K;? The problem is the sophisticated debate that these bastions of Leftist liberals have created. Every Patriot is a lumpen. the smart set , the real cool intellectulas support Afzal Guru. For that is the fastest way to a Noble peace Prize or even a Magasay Award( Get rich quick guys- who cares for that land called India).Only soldiers like us are stupid enough to become EXTREME NATIONALISTS. Only soldiers make that extreme sacrifice !! and all along we were told it was the SUPREME sacrifice . The Flag my friend is NOT a piece of tattered silk to us soldiers. It is the SYMBOL of who we are. it is for this piece of tattered silk that we have to Fight and DIE- we have NO choice. You DO! thats the differece

Lew Wallace of Indiana was a self-taught extraordinary military talent. With boldness and celerity, he advanced in less than a year from the rank of colonel of the 11th Indiana to that of major general commanding the 3rd Division at Shiloh. Ultimately, his civilian, amateur military status collided headlong with the professional military culture being assiduously cultivated by Maj. Gen. Henry W. Halleck, a cautious and difficult commander. The fallout was aggravated by Wallaces unwillingness to acknowledge the protocols that sustained the military chain of command. The primary result of the collision was that he failed to realize his most cherished ambition: leading men in battle. Wallace grew from comparative obscurity to become a model for the civilian, amateur soldier. His participation in the Woolfolk affair in late 1861 personified the difficulties the Lincoln administration had with the army justifying, then enforcing, its official policy of conciliation. Wallaces testimony before the Joint Congressional Committee on the Conduct of the War highlighted that problem anew and galvanized the opposition in his worsening relationship with Ulysses S. Grant. Author Charles G. Beemers extensive investigation of primary sources reveals that a number of existing interpretations concerning Wallace, Grant, Halleck, Grants aide John A. Rawlins, and the Union war effort in the West from Fort Henry to Shiloh, either need refurbishing or demand discarding. Deliberately disobeying a direct order from Grant, Wallace thwarted the probable destruction of the Union right flank at Fort Donelson while simultaneously saving Grants military career from oblivion. For this, he received little recognition, especially from Grant. At Shiloh, Wallace was absent from the field of battle the entire first day, and a thorough explanation of why this happened has yet to become an integral part of the Shiloh story. Predicated upon Wallaces presumed errors of judgment and alleged lack of productive activity that day, Halleck, Rawlins, and an unwitting but supportive Grant engineered a campaign of silence, thereby casting Wallace into the unofficial role of scapegoat for the failure of Union arms on the Tennessee.
