De Batavia is een authentieke reconstructie van een VOC-schip uit 1628. Onder leiding van scheepsbouwmeester Willem Vos bouwden van 1985 tot 1995 in Lelystad enkele honderden jongeren aan dit schip, in het kader van een scholings- en werkervaringsproject. Op 7 april 1995 werd de Batavia door Koningin Beatrix gedoopt en te water gelaten. Batavia was a ship of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). It was built in Amsterdam in 1628, and armed with 24 cast-iron cannons and a number of bronze guns. Batavia was shipwrecked on her maiden voyage, and was made famous by the subsequent mutiny and massacre that took place among the survivors. A twentieth-century replica of the ship is also called the Batavia and can be visited in Lelystad, Netherlands.

This is the dramatic view from a light aircraft taking off from East Wallabi Island in the Abrolhos Group off Geraldton. The track is due south-east as the aircraft crosses to Long Island (2:43 into the video) where the mutineers from the Dutch East Indiaman Batavia and their leader Jeronimus Cornelisz were executed by Pelsaert in 1629 when he returned from Java where he had gone to get assistance; on his return he discovered to his horror that Cornelisz had led an extraordinary campaign of terror. At 3:10 the flight crosses Beacon Island where the murders of the crew and passengers mostly took place and where dozens remain buried. At 4:20 the actual wreck site of the Batavia on Morning Reef can be seen as a light blue rectangle in the right centre just passing under the wing strut. Flight was with Geraldton Air Charter (http://www.geraldtonaircharter.com.au/) and I'd recommend the experience. You should also read Mike Dash's Batavia's Graveyard and Peter Fitzsimons' Batavia. The ship's stern is at the Shipwreck Museum in Fremantle along with the skeleton of a murder victim, coins, cannon, and other artefacts, but some other finds are at Geraldton Museum such as the stone arch destined for the fort at Batavia in Java and being carried by the ship as ballast. This is Western Australia's best story and not to be missed.

Batavia was a ship of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). It was built in Amsterdam in 1628, and armed with 24 cast-iron cannons and a number of bronze guns. Batavia was shipwrecked on her maiden voyage, and was made famous by the subsequent mutiny and massacre that took place among the survivors. A twentieth-century replica of the ship is also called the Batavia and can be visited in Lelystad, Netherlands.

This is the dramatic view from a light aircraft taking off from East Wallabi Island in the Abrolhos Group off Geraldton. The track is due south-east as the aircraft crosses to Long Island (2:43 into the video) where the mutineers from the Dutch East Indiaman Batavia and their leader Jeronimus Cornelisz were executed by Pelsaert in 1629 when he returned from Java where he had gone to get assistance; on his return he discovered to his horror that Cornelisz had led an extraordinary campaign of terror. At 3:10 the flight crosses Beacon Island where the murders of the crew and passengers mostly took place and where dozens remain buried. At 4:20 the actual wreck site of the Batavia on Morning Reef can be seen as a light blue rectangle in the right centre just passing under the wing strut. Flight was with Geraldton Air Charter (http://www.geraldtonaircharter.com.au/) and I'd recommend the experience. You should also read Mike Dash's Batavia's Graveyard and Peter Fitzsimons' Batavia. The ship's stern is at the Shipwreck Museum in Fremantle along with the skeleton of a murder victim, coins, cannon, and other artefacts, but some other finds are at Geraldton Museum such as the stone arch destined for the fort at Batavia in Java and being carried by the ship as ballast. This is Western Australia's best story and not to be missed.
