Benjamin "Ben" Nichols (1920-November 24, 2007) was a professor of electrical and computer engineering at Cornell University and mayor of Ithaca, New York. He was a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and as such was one of few Socialists elected to public office in the United States in the late 20th century.
Nichols was born on Staten Island in 1920 to a family of politically active Communist Party members. Nichols's family was active in union organizing and supporting the Republican cause in the Spanish Civil War. He enrolled at Cornell in 1937, but his studies were interrupted by his service in the United States Army during World War II. In 1946, he received his B.S. in electrical engineering, and later received an M.S. in 1949. He earned a PhD at the University of Alaska in 1956.
He was admitted to the Cornell faculty as an assistant professor in 1949, but left temporarily to earn his Ph.D. In 1953, he became an associate professor and a full professor in 1959. Initially, his work at Cornell focused on radio waves in the ionosphere, but after he grew concerned that his studies would lead to military applications, his pacifist beliefs caused him to change his field of study to science education. In this field he developed new techniques in primary school science education.

Take Shelter is a 2011 American drama-thriller film written and directed by Jeff Nichols and starring Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain. Plagued by a series of apocalyptic visions, a young husband and father (Shannon) questions whether to shelter his family from a coming storm, or from himself. It was nominated for four Saturn Awards including Best Horror or Thriller Film and Best Actress for Chastain, and won Best Writing for Nichols and Best Actor for Shannon.
In Lagrange, Ohio, Curtis LaForche (Michael Shannon) has apocalyptic dreams, and visual and auditory hallucinations, of rain "like fresh motor oil", swarms of menacing black birds, and being harmed by people close to him; but, he hides all of this from his wife, Samantha (Jessica Chastain), and their deaf daughter Hannah (Tova Stewart). He instead channels his anxieties into a compulsive obsession to build a storm shelter in his backyard; however, his increasingly strange behavior -- including a tendency to cut ties with anyone in his life that has harmed him only in his dreams -- strains his relationship with his family, friends, employer, and the close-knit town. Curtis grudgingly sees a counselor at a free clinic, with whom he talks about his family's psychological history (his mother (Kathy Baker) suffers from paranoid schizophrenia that surfaced in her at about the same age that Curtis is now).

Taken from The Last Pale Light In The West EP Lyrics: In my hands, I hold the ashes In my veins, black pitch runs In my chest, a fire catches In my way, a setting sun Dark clouds gather 'round me To the west, my soul is bound And I will go on ahead, free There's a light yet to be found The last pale light in the west The last pale light in the west And I ask for no redemption In this cold and barron place Still I see the faint reflection And so by it, I got my way The last pale light in the west The last pale light in the west

9:50am Friday, December 4th, 2015 I receive a text from one of my musical sherpas, Trevor Bosmans of Showsigoto.com. Ben Nichols of Lucero performing solo acoustic live at 1pm down the road. I gathered my new GoPro camera and recorded the show from start to finish. The only time I stopped recording was once between songs to change batteries and focal lengths. But I didn't miss any music from the set. I wanted to capture the moment from a historical reference point for those of us fortunate enough to be there...and for the Ben Nichols' fans that couldn't be there. My goal was to not detract from the performance by moving about the place...more, I wanted to capture this amazing slice of time so that all of those in attendance could say to their jealous friends that, "yeah, you should'...
Article and photos: http://bit.ly/LuceroRR PG’s Chris Kies catches up with Lucero’s Brian Venable, Ben Nichols, and John C. Stubblefield before the band’s first tour date in support of All a Man Should Do at Nashville’s Cannery Ballroom. Lucero’s longtime lead guitarist eschews a loaded guitar boat—that’s for his studio time—and brings out two identical Fender Highway One Telecasters. The only modification that Brian has done to either axe is adding a custom-made leather pickguard that was given to him by his friend Danny from Crazy Heart Leather Goods. Oh, and the other customization he did to his pink No. 1 is that he carved his son Henry’s name onto the side. Ben Nichols, the band’s founding member, has been a big fan of Epiphone 6-strings since he bought his first Dot model decades...
The camera would only record about 8:30 at a time as individual files. My wife kept hitting record again about every 8:30 when it would shut off. There are a few seconds missing in between segments but the band played continuously through.

Hey, Hey, Davy Brown
You weren’t born a killer, but ya can’t tell it now
Take that shotgun, saw it on down
You’re one bloody bastard Davy Brown
One step ahead of that hangman’s noose
Gonna take ‘em all with ya when they come for you
Hey, Hey, Davy Brown
Keep yer eye on the coin and yer ear to the ground
Your Whitneyville Colt cut a buncha men down
A string full of ears for Davy Brown
One step ahead of that hangman’s noose
Gonna take ‘em all with ya when they come for you
[Chorus:]
Davy Brown, Davy Brown
Where ya gonna be when the hammer comes down?
Can you outshoot the Devil? Outrun his hounds?
Ain’t nothing to it but to stay above ground
Hey, Hey, Davy Brown
Woke up in jail for the last time now
Set a boy a fire, shot another one down
It’s a dance with the gallows for Davy Brown
Dance with the gallows for Davy Brown
Don’t believe in Hell, but he figures somehow
Even if it’s real it’s gonna spit him back out
