Johannesburg (/dʒoʊˈhænᵻsbɜːrɡ/; Afrikaans: [joˈɦɐnəsbœrχ]; also known as Jozi, Jo'burg, eGoli, and Joeys, and abbreviated as JHB) is the largest city in South Africa. It is the provincial capital of Gauteng, which is the wealthiest province in South Africa. The city is one of the 50 largest urban agglomerations in the world, and is also the world's largest city not situated on a river, lake, or coastline. The city was named and established in 1886 following the discovery of gold on what had been a farm. The city is commonly interpreted as the modern day El Dorado due to the extremely large gold deposit found along the Witwatersrand The name is attributed to one or all of three men involved in the establishment of the city. In ten years, the population was 100,000 inhabitants. While Johannesburg is not one of South Africa's three capital cities, it is the seat of the Constitutional Court, which has the final word on interpretation of South Africa's constitution as well as with issues in connection with constitutional matters. The city is the source of a large-scale gold and diamond trade, due to its location on the mineral-rich Witwatersrand range of hills.
South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa, is the southernmost sovereign state in Africa. It is bounded on the south by 2,798 kilometers of coastline of southern Africa stretching along the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans, on the north by the neighbouring countries of Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, and on the east by Mozambique and Swaziland, and surrounding the kingdom of Lesotho. South Africa is the 25th-largest country in the world by land area, and with close to 53 million people, is the world's 24th-most populous nation. It is the southernmost country on the mainland of the Old World or the Eastern Hemisphere.
South Africa is a multiethnic society encompassing a wide variety of cultures, languages, and religions. Its pluralistic makeup is reflected in the constitution's recognition of 11 official languages, which is among the highest number of any country in the world. Two of these languages are of European origin: Afrikaans developed from Dutch and serves as the first language of most white and coloured South Africans; English reflects the legacy of British colonialism, and is commonly used in public and commercial life, though it is fourth-ranked as a spoken first language.
World Famous City, South Africa Johannesburg Tour Johannesburg, more commonly known as Jo’burg or Jozi, is a rapidly changing city and the vibrant heart of South Africa. After almost 20 years of decline and decay, the city is now looking optimistically towards the future. Its centre is smartening up and new loft apartments and office developments are being constructed at a rapid pace. The cultural districts of Newtown and Braamfontein, with their theatres, restaurants, cafes and museums, teem with creativity and energy. The Inner City itself, once a no-go zone, is becoming a tourist gem, with plenty of pleasant surprises. Oh, and there's Maboneng. On the eastern fringes of the Inner City, this hipster-friendly urban neighbourhood is considered as one of the most successful urban-renewal pr...

December 21, 2012 We spent the afternoon at Sandton City, a huge shopping complex that is adjacent to Nelson Mandela Square. In the Square, you can also find the Sandton Public Library, which is very nice. If you have a long layover or, like us, are stuck at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, you can easily go into the city by taking the Gautrain, a commuter train. Most of the stops are in residential areas, but if you want to do a bit of shopping, see a movie, etc., take the Gautrain from OR Tambo to Sandton City. You'll have to buy a Gold Card, which costs a one-time fee of 11 Rand, then add value to the card. A one-way trip from OR Tambo to Sandton City costs 115 Rand per person, which is pricey but still cheaper than taking a taxi. If you're staying at the Garden Court...
I met up with my friend Pilate, who showed me around the south african township of Diepsloot. One of South Africas most dangerous neighborhoods. The township of Diepsloot is just north of Johannesburg and a very interesting place to visit and not nearly as bad as it´s reputation. You can see people going about their daily business. and dogs playing and fighting in the street. Pilate showed me his home and it was a very humbling experience. Diepsloot is a densely populated settlement in the north of Johannesburg, South Africa. It is made up of government-subsidised housing, brick houses built by landowners as well as shacks. These shacks are built on any piece of land with nothing already on it. Some landowners charge rent to others to stay in a shack on their land. For great Hotel and Fli...
South Africa Documentary - Living in Johannesburg Raising kids in Johannesburg comes with its challenges. On the one hand, the city’s reputation for crime concerns both expatriate and local parents who naturally fear for their children’s safety. On the other, Joburg has earned a reputation in some quarters for there not being much to do outside of its sprawling malls and the playgrounds of its mega nurseries. This couldn’t be further from the truth. There is a wealth of activities for expat children to take part in and which can help them adjust to their new surroundings. While safety is justifiably a concern for expat parents, with the necessary precautions and lifestyle adjustments, their children are likely to happy and secure in their new lives. he adult literacy rate in 2007 was ...

Travel video about destination Johannesburg in South Africa. Johannesburg is the commercial centre of South Africa. Since gold was first discovered, everything has revolved around money and from the 50th floor of Africa's tallest building, The Carlton Towers, there is an all-engulfing view of the city's narrow streets and jungle of concrete and glass. The African Museum is a contemporary building and one of South Africa's most exquisite landmarks. It contains a large variety of geological exhibits and detailed accounts of the citys' past surface mining that gave rise to the country's massive gold rush. The resistance to apartheid is also illustrated, as well as that of the history of Africa's native inhabitants who journeyed from present day Botswana to the south of the country. Gold Re...

RA tells the remarkable story of the South African city's thriving house scene. South Africans are the biggest consumers of house music in the world, and Johannesburg is the beating heart of their scene. If you're looking for proof, there is no need to visit a nightclub. In turning on a television, listening to the radio or walking down the street, it's clear that a 4/4 pulse is the metronome of everyday life. The city's preferred sound—vocal-led, percussive, melodic—is largely at odds with what's popular in other international markets; this coupled with cripplingly slow internet speeds goes someway to explaining SA's absence from the global house music conversation. Once I was anothers lover
Now I am my own
Trying to call myself a brother
Living here alone
Maybe if you came to see me
Wishing I wasn't so blind
Sitting here thinking to be free
Maybe we'd all change our mind
She is kind and beautiful
I am young and strong
We have never met each other
But it can't be long
Oft' I have slept by her window
Often I whisper her name
And wonder that words in the wind blow
