Salomon August Andrée

Salomon August Andrée (18 October 1854, Gränna, Småland – October 1897, Kvitøya, Arctic Norway), during his lifetime most often known as S. A. Andrée, was a Swedish engineer, physicist, aeronaut and polar explorer who died while leading an attempt to reach the Geographic North Pole by hydrogen balloon. The balloon expedition was unsuccessful in reaching the Pole and resulted in the deaths of all three of its participants.

Early life and influences

Andrée was born in the small town of Gränna, Sweden; he was very close to his mother, especially after the death of his father in 1870. He attended the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm and graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1874. In 1876 he went to the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, where he was employed as a janitor at the Swedish Pavilion. During his trip to the United States he read a book on trade winds and met the American balloonist John Wise; these encounters initiated his lifelong fascination with balloon travel. He returned to Sweden and opened a machine shop where he worked until 1880; it was less than successful and he soon looked for other employment. From 1880 to 1882 he was an assistant at the Royal Institute of Technology, and in 1882–1883 he participated in a Swedish scientific expedition to Spitsbergen led by Nils Ekholm, where Andrée was responsible for the observations regarding air electricity. From 1885 to his death, he was employed by the Swedish patent office. From 1891 to 1894 he was also a liberal member of the Stockholm city council. As a scientist, Andrée published scientific journals about air electricity, conduction of heat, and inventions. His view of life was that of the natural sciences, and he entirely lacked interest in art or literature. He was a believer in industrial and technical development, and claimed also that emancipation of women would come as a consequence of technical progress.

La Voix

La Voix is a Canadian reality talent show as part of the international television series franchise The Voice, based on the original Dutch version of the program created by John de Mol. The series is part of the The Voice franchise and is based on a similar competition format in The Netherlands entitled The Voice of Holland. The series is structured as three phases: blind auditions, battle rounds and live performance shows.

Pierre Lapointe

Pierre Lapointe (born May 23, 1981 in Alma, Quebec) is a Canadian singer-songwriter. His work largely follows in the tradition of French chanson, though he is influenced by modern pop music. Defining himself as a "popular singer", he has built an egocentric persona of a dandy onstage, but says he does this mostly to deflect attention from himself. His records have found critical and commercial success in Canada.

Life and career

Early life

Pierre Lapointe was born in Lac-Saint-Jean (Alma), May 23, 1981, and grew up in Gatineau, Quebec, in the Outaouais region.

He began studying plastic arts in 1999, but changed his program and started to take theatre courses at the Cégep de Saint-Hyacinthe. He left after a few months to focus on songwriting, but later returned to complete his studies in plastic arts. While there, he entered a competition called Tout nouveau, tout show. Lapointe won the "Award for Songwriter-Performer of the Year" and the "Audience Award". He moved to Montreal and continued studying art at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). In September 2001, he came first in the songwriter category at the Festival international de la chanson de Granby. In November 2002, he held two critically acclaimed shows in Montreal. In December, he received a grant from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec which allowed him to prepare his first commercial album.

Marc Dupré

Marc Dupré (born July 28, 1973) is a Canadian singer, songwriter and musician from Quebec.

Career

His first album release was Refaire le monde in 2005. It included "Tout près du bonheur" with Céline Dion. The song was written by Dion and a music video was also released that was shot in Nevada. At the first Gala Artis, held in Montreal on April 30, 2006, Céline Dion also performed the song with Dupré.

Dupré opened for Céline Dion in her "Taking Chances" tour in Montréal and the release of a second album Revenir à toi in 2008.

His third album Entre deux mondes also contained a duet with Dion in the track "Y'a pas de mots".

His fourth album was released in 2013 titled Nous sommes les mêmes earning him the Félix for "Best male artist of the year"during the "35e Gala L'ADISQ" on 27 October 2013. The title track was a great success in Quebec and earned him also the Félix for "Popular song of the year" during the same event. The album was certified gold in Quebec.

Dupré is also well known as a comedian who imitates other voices and had several comedy appearances at the Juste pour rire festival (known also as Just for Laughs in English) in Montreal.
