The Terek River (Russian: Те́рек; IPA: [ˈtʲerʲɪk]; Georgian: თერგი, Tergi; Ossetian: Терк, Terk, Avar: Терек, Terek, Chechen: Теркa, Terka) is a major river in the Northern Caucasus, flowing through Georgia and Russia into the Caspian Sea. It rises in Georgia near the juncture of the The Greater Caucasus Mountain Range and the Khokh Range, to the southwest of Mount Kazbek, winding north in a white torrent between the town of Stepantsminda and the village of Gergeti [1] toward the Russian region North Ossetia and the city of Vladikavkaz. It turns east to flow through Chechnya and Dagestan before dividing into two branches which empty into the Caspian Sea. Below the city of Kizlyar it forms a swampy river delta around 100 km (62 mi) wide. Major inflows are Gizeldon, Ardon, Urukh, Fiagdon, Malka, Baksan and Sunzha rivers. The river is a key natural asset in the region, being used for irrigation and hydroelectric power in its upper reaches.
The main cities on the Terek are Vladikavkaz, Mozdok, and Kizlyar. Several minor hydroelectrostations are constructed on Terek: Dzau electrostation (in Vladikavkaz), Bekanskaya and Pavlodolskaya.

The Argun River flows through the northern Caucasus, Georgia, and the Chechen Republic of Russia. It is an affluent of the Sunzha and lies within the river basin of the Terek. The river has its sources on the northern slopes of the Caucasus in Georgia. The Argun flows in western Chechnya through Itum-Kalinsky and Shatoysky Districts.
This area was the first place where Chechens established themselves and many ruins of former villages built in the traditional style can still be seen. The Argun serves as a natural border between the Shalinsky and the Groznensky Districts. The occupation of its valley by the Russians in 1858 was an important event in the last phase of the Murid War. Before the First and Second Chechen Wars the region around the river was populated by numerous farms and houses. The town of Argun is named after the river.
On September 7, 2008, the only bridge crossing the Argun River, connecting northern and southern territories of Chechnya, collapsed. Drivers caught on the bridge escaped without injury. A federal road administration representative linked the accident to abnormal stress from heavy military vehicles.

The Chechen capital Grozny has again suffered intensive shelling attacks Thursday. Russian artillery bombarded Minutka Square, an area one kilometre from the Presidential Palace.
Shells rained down again on the besieged city of Grozny today, 2nd February.
Russian forces concentrated just north of Grozny, fired round after round of artillery into the battered capital. This time their target was the area round Minutka Square, one kilometre away from the Presidential Palace.
Russian doctors treating soldiers wounded there said clashes had erupted south of the Sunzha River.
Although the Russian government declared the military phase of
the Chechen operation effectively over last month, tens of thousands
of Russian troops have been locked in battle with a
few thousand lightly armed Chechens for almost two months.
The commander of Russian troops in Chechnya said his forces are still a long way from controlling all of the rebel republic.
Meanwhile the residents of five villages outside Grozny appealed to Russian commanders not to shell them. They proclaimed opposition to General Dudayev.

Rebels retreat after palace is lost
Chechen fighters abandoned the presidential palace on Thursday
(19/1) under a barrage of firepower that reduced the symbol of
their defiance to a charred, smoking skeleton flying the Russian
flag. The loss of the palace -- or what was left of it after the
three-week Russian artillery siege -- signalled a new stage in
Russia's battle to crush Chechnya's bid for independence. Russian
President, Boris Yeltsin, declared in a statement that the
military stage in the campaign in rebel Chechnya was "effectively
over". Until now, the war had been almost entirely centred on the
palace. Now the Chechens say they will defend Grozny inch-by-inch.
For the Russians, however, the taking of the palace was a rare
morale booster. Russian leaders said it signalled the end for the
separatists. If Grozny falls, the Chechens have vowed to take to
the surrounding countryside and mountains to defend their home
villages. The Chechen fighters pulled back from the palace and
took up positions on the other side of the Sunzha River. They said
they saw Russian armoured units on all sides of the palace. Most
of the shattered city's 400,000 people have fled. In another
development, 11 Russian paratroopers captured by Chechen rebels
were temporarily reunited with their parents in the area of
Gudermes on Thursday. The parents of the servicemen, mostly from
southern Russia, recognised their sons when their pictures were
broadcast on Russian television, The Chechen flight from the
presidential palace in Grozny came as Russian forces tightened
their hold on in all areas around the war battered capital. On

Sunzha River
The Sunzha (Russian: Су́нжа; IPA: [ˈsunʐə], Ossetian: Сунжæ, Sunžæ; IPA: [sunʒə], Chechen: Соьлжа, Sölƶa) is a river in North Ossetia, Ingushetia and Chechnya, Russia, a tributary of the Terek River. It flows northeast inside the great northwest bend of the Terek River and catches most of the rivers that flow north from the mountains before they reach the Terek. It is 278 kilometres (173 mi) long. The Sunzha rises on the Northern slope of the Caucasus Major. Its major tributaries are the Assa River and Argun River. With a turbidity of 3,800 grams per cubic metre (6.4 lb/cu yd), it carries 12.2 million tons of alluvium per year. It is used for irrigation. Cities that lie on the Sunzha include Nazran, Karabulak, Grozny (the capital of Chechnya), and Gudermes. During the First and Second Chechen Wars, the destruction of petroleum reservoirs caused the Sunzha to become polluted with petroleum.
Nomenclature
The origin of the name of the river has some versions. The most probable of versions name Sunzha has come from Mongol-Turkic languages in the deformed type. It is known, that Mongols called it Suinchie, Russian Sevenz and in the Chechen language it is names has got in corrective type Solchzha.

their defiance to a charred, smoking skeleton flying the Russian
flag. The loss of the palace -- or what was left of it after the
three-week Russian artillery siege -- signalled a new stage in
Russia's battle to crush Chechnya's bid for independence. Russian
President, Boris Yeltsin, declared in a statement that the
military stage in the campaign in rebel Chechnya was "effectively
over". Until now, the war had been almost entirely centred on the
palace. Now the Chechens say they will defend Grozny inch-by-inch.
For the Russians, however, the taking of the palace was a rare
morale booster. Russian leaders said it signalled the end for the
separatists. If Grozny falls, the Chechens have vowed to take to
the surrounding countryside and mountains to defend their home
villages. The Chechen fighters pulled back from the palace and
took up positions on the other side of the Sunzha River. They said
they saw Russian armoured units on all sides of the palace. Most
of the shattered city's 400,000 people have fled. In another
development, 11 Russian paratroopers captured by Chechen rebels
were temporarily reunited with their parents in the area of
Gudermes on Thursday. The parents of the servicemen, mostly from
southern Russia, recognised their sons when their pictures were
broadcast on Russian television, The Chechen flight from the
presidential palace in Grozny came as Russian forces tightened
their hold on in all areas around the war battered capital. On
Wednesday and Thursday Russian artillery pounded Chechen positions
near the town of Tolstoi-Yurt, some 22 kilometres from Grozny.
