The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) formally ceased to exist on 26 December 1991. The increasing political unrest led the establishment of the Soviet military and the Communist Party of the Soviet Union to attempt a coup d'état to oust Mikhail Gorbachev and re-establish a strong central regime in August 1991.[2] On December 26, 1991, the dissolution of the Soviet Union was finalized by declaration no. 142-H of the Soviet of the Republics of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union,[1] acknowledging the independence of the twelve republics of the Soviet Union, and creating the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). On the previous day, 25 December 1991, Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev had resigned, declaring his office extinct, and handed over the Soviet nuclear missile launc...

On this day, two decades ago, the world's largest country ceased to exist. The fall of the Soviet Union meant the end of the Cold War, and the birth of a dozen new states. But twenty years on, the collapse of the USSR raises unanswered questions, as Ekaterina Gracheva explains. RT on Twitter http://twitter.com/RT_com RT on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/RTnews
This video details the events that led to the collapse of the Soviet Union and the resignation of Gorbachev. It begins with an explanation of why total independence for the Soviet States was unacceptable to the Soviet leadership. The power struggle between Yeltsin and Gorbachev is then presented, along with details of the coup that led to Gorbachev's house arrest and subsequent release thanks to Yeltsin. The clip ends with the Slav states decalaring independence from the USSR, followed by an illuminating interview with President Bush who received Gorbachev's final phone call as General Secretary of the Soviet Union on Christmas Day, 1991.
Daniel Gagliano (12) interviewed Visiting Assistant Professor Wilson Bell on December 10, 2010.

Lech Wałęsa is a retired Polish politician and labor activist. He co-founded and headed Solidarity (Solidarność), the Soviet bloc's first independent trade union, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983, and served as President of Poland from 1990 to 1995. Wałęsa was an electrician by trade. Soon after beginning work at Lenin Shipyard (now Gdańsk Shipyard), he became a trade union activist, for which he was persecuted by the Communist authorities, placed under surveillance, fired in 1976, and arrested several times. In August 1980 he was instrumental in political negotiations that led to the ground-breaking Gdańsk Agreement between striking workers and the government. He became a co-founder of the Solidarity trade union movement. After martial law was imposed in Poland and Solidarity was outlaw...
Read your free e-book: http://downloadapp.us/mebk/50/en/B01CR694L0/book Do the Eu and Nato threaten Russian security? The book explores the rise of these exclusive inter-democratic security institutions after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the ensuing effects on relations with Russia. Two competing theories are tested to explore whether these institutions aggravate or mitigate the security dilemma with Russia. These institutions can be theorised to promote security as a positive-sum game through European integration and democracy promotion, or pursue collective hegemony with ideologically uncompromising bloc-politics. Glenn Diesen argues that a European security architecture that demotes the largest state on the continent to an object of security inevitably results in european integ...

The Republics of the Soviet Union or the Union Republics of the Soviet Union were ethnically based administrative units that were subordinated directly to the Government of the Soviet Union. For most of its history, the Soviet Union was a highly centralized state; the decentralization reforms during the era of Perestroika and Glasnost conducted by Mikhail Gorbachev led to the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. ---Image-Copyright-and-Permission--- About the author(s): Fenn-O-maniC License: Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 (CC BY-SA 3.0) Author(s): Fenn-O-maniC (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Fenn-O-maniC) ---Image-Copyright-and-Permission--- This channel is dedicated to make Wikipedia, one of the biggest knowledge databases in the world available to people with l...
"Historians and economists on the left and right might argue over whether the Soviet Union’s state-controlled economy was better for its nearly 300 million citizens, but the facts cannot be denied: “shock” therapy, designed with close guidance by Western economists, allowed a few oligarchs to buy off the bloc’s wealth for cheap as hundreds of millions suffered from economic depression along with the kind of extreme inequality that continues to this day." Perestroika, which literally means "restructuring", was the difficult time of political and economic reform in the USSR. The reforms were introduced in June 1987 by the new Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. He and his supporters were doing everything they could, but the new economic measures were not working. They could distribute goods, but they couldn't turn a profit. Soviet people were suffering - there was no money and food shortages in shops. It ended with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Thomas Blanton, Director of the National and Igor Grazin, co-producer of The Collapse of the Soviet Union When the Soviet Union collapsed there was a mad scramble for explanations of an event few had predicted. Almost no one looked at the contributing factor of Baltic opposition to Soviet domination. Revelations -- in the late 1980's -- of secret agreements between Hitler and Stalin on the fate of the Baltic nations fueled public anger. That anger and the resulting rejection of Soviet rule are captured in a new documentary. Filmmaker Igor Grazin explains the film; Thomas Blanton comments on it.
