Berbers and Arabs dominate the history of Algeria, but the country also has a splendid remnant of the Roman civilization. It is not very convenient to reach Timgad, but the grand spectacle of the town and fortification built there some two thousand years ago, makes the rigors of Algeria travel worthwhile. The entire area is about one thousand meters above sea level, so it is pleasant even during the hotter months. The countryside around Timgad is desolate, and serves as an object lesson for the benefits of conservation, for it was once a thriving eco-system.
While some of the taller structures such as the famous victory arch strike the eye at first glance, it is the layout and planning of Timgad which is more impressive after one spends some time amidst the ruins. The spirits of the Berbers must repent at having laid waste to Timgad, for they destroyed a precious asset for themselves! Whatever remains of the Roman settlement is due to the absence of any habitation for centuries, rather than because of the conscious efforts to preserve the community which once lived here. Even the most patriotic citizen of Algeria will feel bad after spending time at Timgad, that such a splendid settlement has been needlessly destroyed.
Many modern cities lack the foresight of the people who planned Timgad. This applies as much to Batna, which Timgad visitors have to use as a base station, as to comparable towns which are outside Algeria. Timgad was laid out in grid fashion, which must have made it as easy to locate addresses as in the Manhattan of today! The other impressive aspect of Timgad is how the planners catered to diverse needs in their layout. Though Timgad was meant to be a fortification of the Romans against the Berbers, it also had a theater where people could enjoy the performing arts. It is ironic that the theater is in use to this day, and one of the more pleasant aspects of a Timgad visit.
Visitors who are not conversant with biology may find claims of the agricultural bio-diversity of Timgad unbelievable today. The desert has clearly taken over, and is the victor as much as the Berbers! The land around Timgad was served by melted snow from the mountains in which the settlement nestles, and was once full of wild flora and fauna, and suitable for growing a wide range of crops. The loss of tree cover must have been primarily responsible for destruction of habitats, and the tragic reality of today. Timgad seems to be a symbol of the essential predicament in which Algeria finds itself today!

BATNA - L’ouverture de la 38ème édition du Festival international de Timgad (Batna) a été consacrée mardi soir à une mosaïque de musiques algériennes authentiques représentatives des diverses régions du pays.
Tenue en présence du ministre de la Culture Azzedine Mihoubi et du wali Mohamed Salamani, cette première soirée de Thamugadi 2016 a débuté sur les sons de la gasba et bendir de la troupe Refaâ, conservatrice du vieux genre musical auressien des Rehaba. Le chanteur chaoui Hamid Belbèche lui a succédé en interprétant ses tubes de chaoui moderne.
La musique kabyle avec Taousse Arheb, le raï tlemcenien avec Anouar et le genre sétifien avec Khalass ont régalé les milliers de mélomanes présents sur les tribunes du théâtre de plein air mitoyen au site archéologique de Timgad.
L’enthousiasme du public a été porté à son paroxysme avec la montée sur scène de Kader japoni qui interprété ses chansonnettes à succès auprès des jeunes chantant l’amour, l’espoir et les tracas des jeunes.
Cette première soirée s’est poursuivie jusqu’aux premières heures de mercredi avec un public qui entrait rapidement en communion avec chacun des artistes.
Les chanteurs de cette soirée ont unanimement salué le public mélomane de Timgad toujours ouvert, a affirmé Taousse, à tous les genres musicaux. "Un public en or", ont estimé Kader et Anouar.
Le directeur de la communication et du marketing de l’Office national de la culture et l’information, Samir Meftah, a appelé, dans son allocution à l’occasion, les investisseurs, les entreprises publiques et privées et les acteurs de la société a participé la diversification des actes culturels et à valoriser le théâtre de plein air de Timgad qui ouvre les 8 jours du festival et ferme le reste de l’année.
La ville de Timgad distante de 35 km de Batna a vécu une ambiance inaccoutumée avec l’ouverture du festival qui fêtera l’année prochaine le cinquantenaire de sa première édition.
La seconde soirée de Timgad sera animée par la tunisienne Anima Fakhet et les artistes algériens Mohamed Rouane, Selma Kouiret et Tikoubaouine.

Timgad
Timgad (called Thamugas or Thamugadi in old Berber) was a Roman colonial town in the Aurès Mountains of Algeria, founded by the Emperor Trajan around AD 100. The full name of the town was Colonia Marciana Ulpia Traiana Thamugadi. Trajan commemorated the city after his mother Marcia, eldest sister Ulpia Marciana, and father Marcus Ulpius Traianus.
Located in modern-day Algeria, about 35 km east of the town of Batna, the ruins are noteworthy for representing one of the best extant examples of the grid plan as used in Roman city planning.
History
The city was founded ex nihilo as a military colony by the emperor Trajan around AD 100. It was intended to serve primarily as a bastion against the Berbers in the nearby Aures Mountains. It was originally populated largely by Parthian veterans of the Roman army who were granted lands in return for years of service.
The city enjoyed a peaceful existence for the first several hundred years and became a center of Christian activity starting in the 3rd century, and a Donatist center in the 4th century.

Whatever remains of the Roman settlement is due to the absence of any habitation for centuries, rather than because of the conscious efforts to preserve the community which once lived here. Even the most patriotic citizen of Algeria will feel bad after spending time at Timgad, that such a splendid settlement has been needlessly destroyed.
Many modern cities lack the foresight of the people who planned Timgad. This applies as much to Batna, which Timgad visitors have to use as a base station, as to comparable towns which are outside Algeria. Timgad was laid out in grid fashion, which must have made it as easy to locate addresses as in the Manhattan of today! The other impressive aspect of Timgad is how the planners catered to diverse needs in their layout. Though Timgad was meant to be a fortification of the Romans against the Berbers, it also had a theater where people could enjoy the performing arts. It is ironic that the theater is in use to this day, and one of the more pleasant aspects of a Timgad visit.
Visitors who are not conversant with biology may find claims of the agricultural bio-diversity of Timgad unbelievable today. The desert has clearly taken over, and is the victor as much as the Berbers! The land around Timgad was served by melted snow from the mountains in which the settlement nestles, and was once full of wild flora and fauna, and suitable for growing a wide range of crops. The loss of tree cover must have been primarily responsible for destruction of habitats, and the tragic reality of today. Timgad seems to be a symbol of the essential predicament in which Algeria finds itself today!

BATNA - L’ouverture de la 38ème édition du Festival international de Timgad (Batna) a été consacrée mardi soir à une mosaïque de musiques algériennes authentiques représentatives des diverses régions du pays.
Tenue en présence du ministre de la Culture Azzedine Mihoubi et du wali Mohamed Salamani, cette première soirée de Thamugadi 2016 a débuté sur les sons de la gasba et bendir de la troupe Refaâ, conservatrice du vieux genre musical auressien des Rehaba. Le chanteur chaoui Hamid Belbèche lui a succédé en interprétant ses tubes de chaoui moderne.
La musique kabyle avec Taousse Arheb, le raï tlemcenien avec Anouar et le genre sétifien avec Khalass ont régalé les milliers de mélomanes présents sur les tribunes du théâtre de plein air mitoyen au site archéologique de Timgad.
L’enthousiasme du public a été porté à son paroxysme avec la montée sur scène de Kader japoni qui interprété ses chansonnettes à succès auprès des jeunes chantant l’amour, l’espoir et les tracas des jeunes.
Cette première soirée s’est poursuivie jusqu’aux premières heures de mercredi avec un public qui entrait rapidement en communion avec chacun des artistes.
Les chanteurs de cette soirée ont unanimement salué le public mélomane de Timgad toujours ouvert, a affirmé Taousse, à tous les genres musicaux. "Un public en or", ont estimé Kader et Anouar.
Le directeur de la communication et du marketing de l’Office national de la culture et l’information, Samir Meftah, a appelé, dans son allocution à l’occasion, les investisseurs, les entreprises publiques et privées et les acteurs de la société a participé la diversification des actes culturels et à valoriser le théâtre de plein air de Timgad qui ouvre les 8 jours du festival et ferme le reste de l’année.
La ville de Timgad distante de 35 km de Batna a vécu une ambiance inaccoutumée avec l’ouverture du festival qui fêtera l’année prochaine le cinquantenaire de sa première édition.
La seconde soirée de Timgad sera animée par la tunisienne Anima Fakhet et les artistes algériens Mohamed Rouane, Selma Kouiret et Tikoubaouine.

El Djem (Arabic: قصر الجمّ; Latin Thysdrus) is a town in Mahdia Governorate, Tunisia, population 18,302 (2004 census). It is home to some of the most impressive Roman remains in Africa...
The city was built, like almost all Roman settlements in Tunisia, on former Punic settlements. In a less arid climate than today's, Roman Thysdrus prospered especially in the 2nd century, when it became an important center of olive oil manufacturing for export. It was the seat of a Christian bishop - which is still occupied by a titular Roman Catholic bishop today.
By the early 3rd century AD, when the amphitheater was built, Thysdrus rivaled Hadrumetum (modern Sousse) as the second city of Roman North Africa, after Carthage. However, following the abortive revolt that began there in 238 AD, and Gordian I's suicide in his villa near Carthage, Roman troops loyal to the Emperor Maximinus Thrax destroyed the city. It never really recovered.
The amphitheater was used for filming some of the scenes from the 1979 Monty Python film The Life of Brian and was also used for filming some of the scenes from the Academy Award (Oscar) winning film Gladiator.
El Djem is famous for its amphitheater, often incorrectly called a Colosseum (roughly translated from Latin as 'that thing by the Colossus'), which is capable of seating 35,000 spectators. Only the Flavian Amphitheater in Rome (about 50,000 spectators) and the ruined theatre of Capua are larger. The amphitheatre at El Djem was built by the Romans under proconsul Gordian, who was acclaimed Emperor at Thysdrus, around 238 and was probably mainly used for gladiator shows and chariot races (like in Ben-Hur). Many tourists come here to see what it was like to be inside what was once a place where lions and people met their fate. Much of it is crumbled but the essence of it still remains. It is also possible that construction of the amphitheatre was never finished.
Until the 17th century it remained more or less whole. El Djem (Arabic: قصر الجمّ; Latin Thysdrus) is a town in Mahdia Governorate, Tunisia, population 18,302 (2004 census). It is home to some of the most impressive Roman remains in Africa...
The city was built, like almost all Roman settlements in Tunisia, on former Punic settlements. In a less arid climate than today's, Roman Thysdrus prospered especially in the 2nd century, when it became an important center of olive oil manufacturing for export. It was the seat of a Christian bishop - which is still occupied by a titular Roman Catholic bishop today.
By the early 3rd century AD, when the amphitheater was built, Thysdrus rivaled Hadrumetum (modern Sousse) as the second city of Roman North Africa, after Carthage. However, following the abortive revolt that began there in 238 AD, and Gordian I's suicide in his villa near Carthage, Roman troops loyal to the Emperor Maximinus Thrax destroyed the city. It never really recovered.
The amphitheater was used for filming some of the scenes from the 1979 Monty Python film The Life of Brian and was also used for filming some of the scenes from the Academy Award (Oscar) winning film Gladiator.
El Djem is famous for its amphitheater, often incorrectly called a Colosseum (roughly translated from Latin as 'that thing by the Colossus'), which is capable of seating 35,000 spectators. Only the Flavian Amphitheater in Rome (about 50,000 spectators) and the ruined theatre of Capua are larger. The amphitheatre at El Djem was built by the Romans under proconsul Gordian, who was acclaimed Emperor at Thysdrus, around 238 and was probably mainly used for gladiator shows and chariot races (like in Ben-Hur). Many tourists come here to see what it was like to be inside what was once a place where lions and people met their fate. Much of it is crumbled but the essence of it still remains. It is also possible that construction of the amphitheatre was never finished.

Professor Kleiner discusses two Roman cities in North Africa: Timgad and Leptis Magna. Timgad was created as an entirely new colony for Roman army veterans by Trajan in A.D. 100, and designed all at once as an ideal castrum plan. Leptis Magna, conversely, grew more gradually from its Carthaginian roots, experiencing significant Roman development under Augustus and Hadrian. Septimius Severus, the first Roman emperor from North Africa, was born at Leptis and his hometown was renovated in connection with his historic visit to the city. This large-scale program of architectural expansion features the Severan Forum and Basilica and the nearby Arch of Septimius Severus, a tetrapylon or four-sided arch located at the crossing of two major streets. The lecture culminates with the unique Hunting Baths, a late second or early third-century structure built for a group of entrepreneurs who supplied exotic animals to Rome's amphitheaters. Its intimate vaulted spaces are revealed on the outside of the building and silhouetted picturesquely against the sea, suggesting that the bath's owners knew how to innovate through concrete architecture and how to enjoy life.

Les récentes images de la destruction de trésors antiques en Irak ont réveillé les craintes d'un scénario similaire en Libye, un pays au riche patrimoine archéologique où les groupes jihadistes gagnent du terrain.
Méconnue, la richesse patrimoniale de la Libye a peu à envier à celle de l'Italie, son ancienne puissance coloniale, ou de la Grèce. Cyrène est ainsi surnommée "l'Athènes d'Afrique" et son temple d'Apollon comparé à celui d'Olympie.
D'ailleurs, les sites de Cyrène comme ceux de Leptis, Sabratha (nord), Ghadamès (ouest) et Akakous (sud) sont classés au patrimoine mondial de l'Unesco.
"Nous craignons que les extrémistes ne s'en prennent à notre patrimoine comme ils l'ont fait en Irak", s'inquiète le chef du service des Antiquités libyennes Ahmed Hassan, interviewé par l'AFP à Shahat, une ville de l'est proche de Cyrène. C'est pour cela que "nous travaillons avec des partenaires étrangers et d'autres acteurs", ajoute-t-il.
"Experts et archéologues craignent que le scénario irakien ne se reproduise en Libye", confie aussi Mohamed al-Chelmani, le responsable du département Archéologique de Benghazi, la grande ville de l'est.
La communauté internationale avait été très choquée en février par une vidéo diffusée par le groupe Etat islamique montrant des jihadistes réduisant en miettes de nombreuses pièces archéologiques, dont des objets inestimables exposés au musée de Mossoul, le fief de l'EI en Irak.
Le groupe jihadiste, qui contrôle depuis 2014 de nombreuses régions de ce pays, est aussi accusé d'avoir pillé et vandalisé de nombreux sites archéologiques.
- Mausolées détruits -
Comme en Irak où l'EI a profité de l'incapacité de forces de l'ordre à assurer la sécurité, les jihadistes poussent leurs pions en Libye, notamment dans l'est, en profitant du chaos qui y règne depuis la chute du colonel Kadhafi en octobre 2011.
Le pays est depuis sous le joug de milices rivales, avec aujourd'hui deux gouvernements et parlements rivaux, sans aucune perspective de règlement politique de la crise.
Fin 2104, une emblématique statue d'une femme nue caressant une gazelle a disparu en plein Tripoli, un acte attribué par les autorités à des "des terroristes".
Plusieurs mausolées dans la capitale et ailleurs ont en outre été détruits par des islamistes radicaux parfois au bulldozer car, selon eux, la vénération de saints musulmans ou de leurs tombes contredit l'unicité de Dieu.
Dans ce contexte, les archéologues n'excluent plus de mettre à l'abri "hors du pays" les trésors menacés, et de les rapatrier une fois la sécurité rétablie, selon M. Chelmani.
Pour mener à bien ce projet, les responsables libyens entendent demander l'aide de l'Unesco et de l'ONU, explique-t-il.
L'urgence est aussi de lutter contre le trafic d'antiquités, l'absence de sécurité ayant favorisé les fouilles clandestines sur les sites.
Plusieurs cas de vols d'objets antiques ont ainsi été répertoriés à Syrte (nord), Cyrène et dans d'autres localités de l'Est, selon le porte-parole du département des Antiquités, Fathallah Kammech.
Fin 2011, "le trésor de Benghazi", une collection de quelque 8.000 pièces d’or, d'argent et de bronze, remontant à Alexandre le Grand, et qui était conservé dans une banque de cette ville, s'est volatilisé.
Les archéologues regrettent que les Libyens, d'une façon générale, n'aient pas conscience de l'importance du patrimoine pré-islamique.
L'expert libyen en archéologie Fadhl al-Hassi cite l'exemple de la destruction d'au moins 15 sites depuis 2011 par des habitants qui ont construit des maisons à leur place, dont certaines à Shahat.
A Tobrouk, à la frontière égyptienne, un ancien palais islamique remontant à plusieurs siècles a été endommagé et fait aujourd’hui office d’étable.
La plupart des sites archéologiques, en pleine nature, ne sont par ailleurs pas très bien protégés, surveillés seulement par des civils non armés dépendant du département des Antiquités.
